This document summarizes the activities that were accomplished in FY 2009 on the research project “Cape Sable seaside sparrow habitat – Vegetation Monitoring”, a collaborative effort among the US Army Corps of Engineers, Florida International University, and the US Geological Survey. The major activities in 2009 included field work, data analysis and presentations. The results of 2009 field work were presented at the 4th International Congress of Fire Ecology and Management, Savannah, GA from November 30 to Dec 5, 2009 and at the Cape Sable seaside sparrow (CSSS) Fire Meeting, held at the Krome Center, Homestead, FL on December 8, 2009. Field sampling was conducted between March 23 and June 3, 2009, during which we resurveyed 234 sites: 191 Census sites, 3 sites on Transect B, 7 sites on Transect D, and 33 sites on Transect F. The number of sites sampled in 2009 was higher than in any previous year, primarily because a large number of sites burned in Mustang Corner fire and three other wild fires in 2008 were included in 2009 sampling. At all sites surveyed in 2009, we recorded structural and compositional vegetation parameters following the methods used in previous years (2003-2008) and tagged shrubs and trees (woody plants > 1 m) present in the 5 x 60 m plots. In addition, for the first time, we measured height of sawgrass (Cladium jamaicense) stubble in the compositional plots at the sites that were burned in 2008. Field data were entered by field crews, and were thoroughly checked by Jay Sah (Co-PI) to ensure that the data were complete, correct, and compliant with sampling methodologies. The data are stored under a project folder on a shared network drive maintained by the Southeast Environmental Research Center (SERC) at FIU. The shared network drive is backed up daily.

Written at a time of significant changes for women and for women writers in Queensland, Australia, Jay Verney's A Mortality Tale (1994), privileges women's experiences of place and seeks to redeem the feminine from its entrapment in masculine stories/discourses of self and place. This chapter draws on Julia Kristeva's conceptualisation of the semiotic as a way of reading Verney's witty and reflective re-articulation of phallocentric orderings of spatiality and gender.

In order to improve the production and accurately estimate response to selection, divergent selection for growth in shell height was conducted in a cultured population of the Japanese scallop Patinopecten yessoensis. Applying the same selection intensity +/- 1.756 in upward and downward directions, three groups including two selected groups of Fast and Slow and one non-selected Control group were created, which were reared under the same environmental conditions at any stage. Differences always significantly existed among the three groups (P < 0.05), except for larvae at day 1 and at day 5, and in the order of Fast > Control > Slow. The average standardized response to selection (SR), realized heritability (h(R)2) and genetic gain (GG) was 0.473%, 0.269% and 7.85% for the Fast group and 0.381%, 0.217% and 6.60% for the Slow group respectively. Moreover, significant differences (P < 0.05) were detected between the fast and the slow lines in both SR and h(R)2, providing evidence for an asymmetric response in two directions. Performance in shell height is improved by 7.85% in the fast line after one generation selection, suggesting that mass selection for faster growth in a cultured population of the Japanese scallop is effective.

Purpose: To compare long-term cognitive outcomes of patients treated with surgical clipping or endovascular coiling after subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH). Method: Retrospective matched cohort study assessed neuropsychological functioning at least 12 months after aneurysmal SAH treatment. Fourteen patients treated by endovascular coiling and nine patients treated by surgical clipping participated. After gaining written consent, a comprehensive neuropsychological battery was completed. Standardised tests were employed to assess pre-morbid and current intellectual functioning (IQ), attention, speed of information processing, memory and executive function as well as psychosocial functioning and affect. Results: Treatment groups were not significantly different in terms of age, pre-morbid IQ, time from injury to treatment or time since injury. A significant effect of treatment on full-scale IQ score (p = 0.025), performance IQ (p = 0.045) and verbal IQ score (p = 0.029), all favouring the coiled group was observed. A medium effect size between groups difference in immediate memory (p = 0.19, partial ?(2) = 0.08) was also observed. No significant between group differences on attention, executive functioning and speed of information processing measures or mood and psychosocial functioning were noted. Both groups reported increased anxiety and memory, attention and speed of information processing deficits relative to normative data. Conclusions: Study findings indicate fewer cognitive deficits following endovascular coiling. Cognitive deficits in the clipped group may be due in part to the invasive nature of neurosurgical clipping. Further prospective research with regard to long-term cognitive and emotional outcomes is warranted. [Box: see text].
