An iron prophyrin complex has been immobilized on the surfaces of platinum, silver, and indium doped-tin oxide coated glass by using the poly(gamma-ethyl L-glutamate)-N-(3-aminopropyl)imidazole derivative 1 as a linking agent, thus allowing-the surface-enhanced resonance Raman and UV-VIS absorption spectra and electrochemical properties of the porphyrin to be studied in solvents in which it is not normally soluble.

Exploitation of the electronic properties of carbon nanotubes for the development of voltammetric and amperometric sensors to monitor analytes of environmental relevance has increased in recent years. This work reports the development of a biomimetic sensor based on a carbon paste modified with 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)-21H,23H-porphyrin iron (III) chloride (a biomimetic catalyst of the P450 enzyme) and multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), for the sensitive and selective detection of the herbicide 2,4- dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D). The sensor was evaluated using cyclic voltammetry and amperometry, for electrochemical characterization and quantification purposes, respectively. Amperometric analyses were carried out at -100 mV vs. Ag/AgCl(KClsat), using a 0.1 mol L-1 phosphate buffer solution at pH 6.0 as the support electrolyte. Under these optimized analytical conditions, the sensor showed a linear response between 9.9 × 10-6 and 1.4 × 10-4 mol L-1, a sensitivity of 1.8 × 104 (±429) μA L mol -1, and limits of detection and quantification of 2.1 × 10 -6 and 6.8 × 10-6 mol L-1, respectively. The incorporation of functionalized MWCNT in the carbon paste resulted in a 10-fold increase in the response, compared to that of the biomimetic sensor without MWCNT. In addition, the low applied potential (-100 mV) used to obtain high sensitivity also contributed to the excellent selectivity of the proposed sensor. The viability of the application of this sensor for analysis of soil samples was confirmed by satisfactory recovery values, with a mean of 96% and RSD of 2.1% (n = 3). © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

Ultrathin multilayer films have been prepared by means of alternate adsorption of iron(Ill)-substituted heteropolytungstate anions and a cationic redox polymer on the 4-aminobenzoic acid modified glassy carbon electrode surface based on electrostatic layer-by-layer assembly. Cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and UV-Vis absorption spectrometry have been used to easily monitor the uniformity of thus-formed multilayer films. Especially, the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy is successfully used to monitor the multilayer deposition processes and is a very useful technique in the characterization of multilayer films because it provides valuable information about the interfacial impedance features. All these results reveal regular film growth with each layer adsorption. The resulting multilayer films can effectively catalyze the reduction of H2O2,NO2- and BrO3-.

Three novel polymetallic ruthenium (III) meso-tetra(4-pyridyl)porphyrins containing peripheral ""RuCl(3)(dppb)"" moieties have been prepared and characterized. The X-ray structure of the tetraruthenated {NiTPyP[RuCl(3)(dppb)](4)} porphyrin complex crystallizes in the triclinic space group FT. This structure is discussed and compared with the crystal data for the mer-[RuCl(3)(dppb)(py)]. The {TPyP[RuCl(3)(dppb)](4)} and {CoTPyP[RuCl(3)(dppb)](4)} porphyrins were used to obtain electrogenerated films on ITO and glass carbon electrode surfaces, respectively. Such tetraruthenated porphyrins form films of a mixed-valence species {TPyP[Ru(dppb)](4)(mu Cl(3))(2)}(2)(4n2+) and {CoTPyP[Ru(dppb)](4)(mu Cl(3))(2)}(2n)(4n2+) on the electrode surface. The modified electrode with {CoTPyP[RuCl(3)(dppb)](4)} is very stable and can be used to detect organic substrates such as catechol.

This work describes the synthesis of a first-generation iron porphyrin catalyst entrapped in a silica matrix by the sol-gel route, leading to spherical particles. The catalyst was synthesized by the method of Stober, through hydrolysis and condensation of the alkoxysilane TEOS in a mixture of alcohol, water and ammonia, in the presence of the iron porphyrin Fe(TPP)Cl. The relation between particle morphology and catalytic activity of the different Fe(TPP)-SiO2, obtained using different H2O/silane molar ratios and ammonia concentrations in the xerogel syntheses, was studied. The obtained catalysts were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy, NMR Si-29. thermogravimetric analysis and transmission electron microscopy. Their ability to catalyze (Z)-cyclooctene epoxidation and cyclohexane oxidation was tested using iodosylbenzene as oxygen donor; the oxidation products were analyzed by gas chromatography and the catalysts obtained in a form of particles spherical and monodispersed showed to be a promising catalytic system for selective oxidation. We describe the controlled fabrication of ultrathin multilayer films consisting of tri-vanadium- substituted heteropolytungstate anions (denoted as P2W15V3) and a cationic polymer of quaternized poly (4-vinylpyridine) partially complexed with osmium bis(2,2'-bipyridine) (denoted as QPVP-Os) on the 4-aminobenzoic acid (4-ABA) modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) surface based on layer-by-layer assembly. Cyclic voltammetry and UV-vis absorption spectrometry have been used to easily monitor the thickness and uniformity of thus-formed multilayer films. The V-centered redox reaction of P2W15V3 in the multilayer films can effectively catalyze the reduction of BrO3- and NO2-. The resulting P2W15V3/QPVP-Os multilayer film modified electrode behaves as a much promising electrochemical sensor because of the low overpotential for the catalytic reduction of BrO3- and NO2-, and the catalytic oxidation of ascorbic acid.

A novel organic-inorganic composite film was formed by attaching Keegin-type heteropolyanion, SiW12O404- (devoted briefly as SiW12), on a glassy carbon electrode derivatized by 4-aminophenyl group. The composite film has an ionic bonding character between SiW12 and the surface amino group, which greatly improves the Blm stability and exhibits a more reversible electrochemical behavior. The modified electrode offers an excellent and stable electrocatalytic response for the reduction of nitrite. Possible mechanism was provided for the reaction of nitrite with SiW12O404-/aminophenyl composite film.

The electrochemical behavior of Dawson-type P2W18O626- adsorbed on a glassy carbon electrode and doped in a polypyrrole film electrode was described. These modified electrodes all display catalytic activity for nitrite reduction, either in acid solutions or in pH > 4.0 solutions.

A series of new catalysts, K-14[Ln(As2W17O61)(2)]. xH(2)O (Ln = La, Pr, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Tm and Yb) which can electrocatalyze reduction of nitrite are presented and their electrochemical behavior is described in this paper. Bis(2:17-arsenotungstate) lanthanates which are monovacant Dawson derivatives, exhibit two 2-electron and one 1-electron waves, attributed to electron addition and removal from the tungsten-oxide framework that comprises each anion structure. The formal potentials of redox couples are dependent on solution pH. Double-hump principle of formal potentials takes effect with increasing atomic number of lanthanide elements following their special electronic shell structure. The third waves of all the heteropolyanions have good electrocatalytic activities for nitrite reduction at pH 5.0.

Three couples of reversible redox waves of the SiW12O404- anion which are composed of two one-electron and one two-electron processes occur in the potential range +0.1 to -0.7 V in aqueous solutions. The first (most positive) and third (most negative) redox waves exhibit good electrocatalytic activities for nitrite reduction in acid solutions with pH < 2 for the former and with pH similar or equal to 4 for the latter. The behavior of the third catalytic wave, which is quite unusual, was studied in detail. The rate constant governing the reduction of NO2- by the first wave of SiW12O404- was measured by an ultramicrodisk electrode as 3.73 x 10(3) M(-1) s(-1).

The [Ru(3)O(H(3)CCO(2))(6)(py)(2)(L)]PF(6) clusters, where L=methanol or dimethyl sulfoxide, can be activated by peroxide or oxygen donor species, such as tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) or iodosylbenzene (PhIO), respectively, generating reactive intermediates of the type [Ru(3)(IV,IV,III)=0](+). In this way, they catalyse the oxidation of cyclohexane or cyclohexene by TBHP and PhIO, via oxygen atom transfer, rather than by the alternative oxygen radical mechanism characteristic of this type of complexes. In addition to their ability to perform efficient olefin epoxydation catalysis, these clusters also promote the cleavage of the C-H bond in hydrocarbons, resembling the oxidation catalysis by metal porphyrins.
