Relief Mapping is giving great results for the creation of 3D impostor models. An impostor model is a simplication of an original geometric model that is used to replace it. Then, the original volume can be reproduced in a high quality representation with very few artifacts or cracks and a high compactness. We have studied the state of the art on Relief Impostors and some current techniques related to them. In particular, we have implemented the Omni-directional Relief Impostors (ORI) technique and its hierarchical extension (HORI), througn the usage of spatial partition methods. We expose an alternative to the spatial distribution and selection of the impostors. Furthermore, we show a different computation for the rendering view distance in order to guarantee a minimal quality for the simplified representation. Finally, we discuss the obtained results and propose some new ideas or approaches to enhance the efficiency and quality of the final rendering using ORIs' and HORIs' techniques. In addition, our implementation has involved a software engineering study in the Open Source field.

When differences matter: Intergroup distinctiveness and the evaluation of impostors

The present study examined the effect of intergroup distinctiveness and group membership on evaluations of impostors. We predicted that ingroup members would be harsher than outgroup members on an impostor and that perceptions of intergroup distinctiveness would further moderate these evaluations. Specifically, we tested the social identity theory prediction that low intergroup distinctiveness would lead to greater derogation of the impostor (the 'reactive distinctiveness' hypothesis) against the self-categorization hypothesis that high intergroup distinctiveness would instigate more derogation of an impostor (the 'reflective distinctiveness' hypothesis). In this study, vegetarians (ingroup members) and meat eaters (outgroup members) were presented with a target claiming to be vegetarian, but caught indulging in a meat dish. We found that ingroup members derogated the impostor more and felt less pleased about discovering the impostor behaviour than did outgroup members. In line with the reflective distinctiveness hypothesis, the heightened derogation displayed by ingroup members only emerged when intergroup distinctiveness was high, an effect that was mediated by ratings of group identification. Distinguishing post-AGB impostors in a sample of pre-main sequence stars

Context. A sample of 27 sources, cataloged as pre-main sequence stars by the Pico dos Dias Survey (PDS), is analyzed to investigate a possible contamination by post-AGB stars. The far-infrared excess due to dust present in the circumstellar envelope is typical of both categories: young stars and objects that have already left the main sequence and are suffering severe mass loss. Aims. The two known post-AGB stars in our sample inspired us to seek for other very likely or possible post-AGB objects among PDS sources previously suggested to be Herbig Ae/Be stars, by revisiting the observational database of this sample. Methods. In a comparative study with well known post-AGBs, several characteristics were evaluated: (i) parameters related to the circumstellar emission; (ii) spatial distribution to verify the background contribution from dark clouds; (iii) spectral features; and (iv) optical and infrared colors. Results. These characteristics suggest that seven objects of the studied sample are very likely post-AGBs, five are possible post-AGBs, eight are unlikely post-AGBs, and the nature of seven objects remains unclear.
