"In Perpetual Motion is an "historical choreography" of power, pedagogy, and the child from the 1600s to the early 1900s. It breaks new ground by historicizing the analytics of power and motion that have interpenetrated renditions of the young. Through a detailed examination of the works of John Locke, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Johann Herbart, and G. Stanley Hall, this book maps the discursive shifts through which the child was given a unique nature, inscribed in relation to reason, imbued with an effectible interiority, and subjected to theories of power and motion. The book illustrates how developmentalist visions took hold in U.S. public school debates. It documents how particular theories of power became submerged and taken for granted as essences inside the human subject. Sheona Thomson writes about the transformation of a public institution in relation to a study on post-occupancy. "Brisbanites like me, with memories of long hours of study in the former buildings of the State Library of Queensland, can only marvel at the living institution we have in our city today. For most of the 80s, our bookish pursuits were hosted in the fustily intimate reading rooms of Centennial Hall, the late 1950s extension to the nineteenth-century building (formerly housing the state museum) by F. D. G. Stanley in William Street on the north bank of the Brisbane River. At the time, the wheels of an expansive cultural ambition were turning, and piece by piece on the south bank of the river the rambling Queensland Cultural Centre was realized. The fourth stage of the complex opened in 1988 as the new home for the State Library and for many years after, countless studious, transient folk whiled away time in the deep interiors of the straight-faced concrete and glass edifice by Robin Gibson and Partners..."

After two decades advertising and defending the synthetic method, João Köpke became active disseminator of analytical method for teaching reading. In five te xts published between 1896 and 1917, produced in different circumstance s for different publics readers, Köpke seeks the support of American and European authors, for their principles as well as for the education experience, to his analytical method. as by theirs principles as by theirs educational experiences. Among those authors: J. Jacotot, A. Bain, A. Meiklejohn, J. Froebel, C. Parker, G. Stanley Hall and J. Chubb. In this article, attention is given to repeated American references with special emphasis on the psychology of Stanley Hall and the method of teaching reading of Meiklejohn, highlighted and placed on convergence by Köpke in his final writings.

En el contexto organizacional actual, que se caracteriza por ser hiper-conectado, cambiante, globalizado y cargado de incertidumbre, la capacidad de las organizaciones para identificar y tratar provechosamente el riesgo se hace necesaria e ineludible. Dicho más claro: gestionar adecuadamente el riesgo se convierte en un aspecto crítico para la perdurabilidad de las organizaciones. Más allá de las comprensiones tradicionales del riesgo, cuyo núcleo es el riesgo financiero, nuevas tendencias –más generales y abarcadoras– se han gestado en las últimas décadas. Una de la más destacada es la gestión del riesgo sistémico. Pese a este reconocimiento, sin embargo, siguen predominando los enfoques analítico-financieros, sobre todo en el ámbito latinoamericano. Este trabajo de grado pretende, por tanto, hacer un análisis sobre la gestión del riesgo sistémico e identificar las diferentes tendencias del riesgo y sus potencialidades de cara al ambiente organizacional actual.

Wild and managed bees are well documented as effective pollinators of global crops of economic importance. However, the contributions by pollinators other than bees have been little explored despite their potential to contribute to crop production and stability in the face of environmental change. Non-bee pollinators include flies, beetles, moths, butterflies, wasps, ants, birds, and bats, among others. Here we focus on non-bee insects and synthesize 39 field studies from five continents that directly measured the crop pollination services provided by non-bees, honey bees, and other bees to compare the relative contributions of these taxa. Non-bees performed 25–50% of the total number of flower visits. Although non-bees were less effective pollinators than bees per flower visit, they made more visits; thus these two factors compensated for each other, resulting in pollination services rendered by non-bees that were similar to those provided by bees. In the subset of studies that measured fruit set, fruit set increased with non-bee insect visits independently of bee visitation rates, indicating that non-bee insects provide a unique benefit that is not provided by bees. We also show that non-bee insects are not as reliant as bees on the presence of remnant natural or seminatural habitat in the surrounding landscape. These results strongly suggest that non-bee insect pollinators play a significant role in global crop production and respond differently than bees to landscape structure, probably making their crop pollination services more robust to changes in land use. Non-bee insects provide a valuable service and provide potential insurance against bee population declines.

Preferential phosphorylation of specific proteins by cAMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA) may be mediated in part by the anchoring of PKA to a family of A-kinase anchor proteins (AKAPs) positioned in close proximity to target proteins. This interaction is thought to depend on binding of the type II regulatory (RII) subunits to AKAPs and is essential for PKA-dependent modulation of the α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid/kainate receptor, the L-type Ca2+ channel, and the KCa channel. We hypothesized that the targeted disruption of the gene for the ubiquitously expressed RIIα subunit would reveal those tissues and signaling events that require anchored PKA. RIIα knockout mice appear normal and healthy. In adult skeletal muscle, RIα protein levels increased to partially compensate for the loss of RIIα. Nonetheless, a reduction in both catalytic (C) subunit protein levels and total kinase activity was observed. Surprisingly, the anchored PKA-dependent potentiation of the L-type Ca2+ channel in RIIα knockout skeletal muscle was unchanged compared with wild type although it was more sensitive to inhibitors of PKA–AKAP interactions. The C subunit colocalized with the L-type Ca2+ channel in transverse tubules in wild-type skeletal muscle and retained this localization in knockout muscle. The RIα subunit was shown to bind AKAPs, although with a 500-fold lower affinity than the RIIα subunit. The potentiation of the L-type Ca2+ channel in RIIα knockout mouse skeletal muscle suggests that, despite a lower affinity for AKAP binding, RIα is capable of physiologically relevant anchoring interactions.

The antipsychotic drug, haloperidol, elicits the expression of neurotensin and c-fos mRNA in the dorsal lateral region of the striatum and produces an acute cataleptic response in rodents that correlates with the motor side effects of haloperidol in humans. Mice harboring a targeted disruption of the RIIβ subunit of protein kinase A have a profound deficit in cAMP-stimulated kinase activity in the striatum. When treated with haloperidol, RIIβ mutant mice fail to induce either c-fos or neurotensin mRNA and the acute cataleptic response is blocked. However, both wild-type and mutant mice become cataleptic when neurotensin peptide is directly injected into the lateral ventricle, demonstrating that the kinase deficiency does not interfere with the action of neurotensin but rather its synthesis and release. These results establish a direct role for protein kinase A as a mediator of haloperidol induced gene induction and cataleptic behavior.
