In this work we presented an exhibition of the mathematical theory of orthogonal compact support wavelets in the context of multiresoluction analysis. These are particularly attractive wavelets because they lead to a stable and very efficient algorithm, that is Fast Transform Wavelet (FWT). One of our objectives is to develop efficient algorithms for calculating the coefficients wavelet (FWT) through the pyramid algorithm of Mallat and to discuss his connection with filters Banks. We also studied the concept of multiresoluction analysis, that is the context in that wavelets can be understood and built naturally, taking an important step in the change from the Mathematical universe (Continuous Domain) for the Universe of the representation (Discret Domain)

This paper is on the use and performance of M-path polyphase Infinite Impulse Response (IIR) filters for channelisation, conventionally where Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filters are preferred. This paper specifically focuses on the Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) modulated filter banks, which are known to be an efficient choice for channelisation in communication systems. In this paper, the low-pass prototype filter for the DFT filter bank has been implemented using an M-path polyphase IIR filter and we show that the spikes present at the stopband can be avoided by making use of the guardbands between narrowband channels. It will be shown that the channelisation performance will not be affected when polyphase IIR filters are employed instead of their counterparts derived from FIR prototype filters. Detailed complexity and performance analysis of the proposed use will be given in this article.

An algorithm for computing dense correspondences between images of a stereo pair or image sequence is presented. The algorithm can make use of both standard matching metrics and the rank and census filters, two filters based on order statistics which have been applied to the image matching problem. Their advantages include robustness to radiometric distortion and amenability to hardware implementation. Results obtained using both real stereo pairs and a synthetic stereo pair with ground truth were compared. The rank and census filters were shown to significantly improve performance in the case of radiometric distortion. In all cases, the results obtained were comparable to, if not better than, those obtained using standard matching metrics. Furthermore, the rank and census have the additional advantage that their computational overhead is less than these metrics. For all techniques tested, the difference between the results obtained for the synthetic stereo pair, and the ground truth results was small.

The rank and census are two filters based on order statistics which have been applied to the image matching problem for stereo pairs. Advantages of these filters include their robustness to radiometric distortion and small amounts of random noise, and their amenability to hardware implementation. In this paper, a new matching algorithm is presented, which provides an overall framework for matching, and is used to compare the rank and census techniques with standard matching metrics. The algorithm was tested using both real stereo pairs and a synthetic pair with ground truth. The rank and census filters were shown to significantly improve performance in the case of radiometric distortion. In all cases, the results obtained were comparable to, if not better than, those obtained using standard matching metrics. This correspondence describes a method for automated segmentation of speech. The method proposed in this paper uses a specially designed filter-bank called Bach filter-bank which makes use of 'music' related perception criteria. The speech signal is treated as continuously time varying signal as against a short time stationary model. A comparative study has been made of the performances using Mel, Bark and Bach scale filter banks. The preliminary results show up to 80 % matches within 20 ms of the manually segmented data, without any information of the content of the text and without any language dependence. The Bach filters are seen to marginally outperform the other filters.

Seepage flow under hydraulic structures provided with intermediate filters has been investigated. The flow through the banks of the canal has been included in the model. Different combinations of intermediate filter and canal width were studied. Different lengths of the floor, differential heads, and depths of the sheet pile driven beneath the floor were also investigated. The introduction of an intermediate filter to the floor of hydraulic structures reduced the uplift force acting on the downstream floor by up to 72%. The maximum uplift reduction occurred when the ratio of the distance of filter location downstream from the cutoff to the differential head was 1. Introducing a second filter in the downstream side resulted in a further reduction in the exit hydraulic gradient and in the uplift force, which reached 90%. The optimum locations of the two filters occurred when the first filter was placed just downstream of the cutoff wall and the second filter was placed nearly at the middistance between the cutoff and the end toe of the floor. The results showed significant differences between the three-dimensional (3D) and the two-dimensional (2D) analyses.
