In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird die Struktur von Alkali- und Erdalkalisilicatglaesern bei hohen Temperaturen (bis 1800 K) mit Hilfe der Raman-Spektroskopie untersucht. Ein wesentlicher Teil der vorliegenden Arbeit besteht in dem Aufbau einer Hochtemperatureinrichtung, die es erlaubt, Raman-Spektren von Silicatglaesern bei sehr hohen Temperaturen zu messen. Mit der Hochtemperatur-Raman-Spektroskopie an Silicatglaesern sind erhebliche experimentelle Schwierigkeiten verbunden: Die thermische Strahlung der Probe überlagert sich mit dem Raman-Spektrum.Die Temperaturbestimmung der Glasprobe, die einen Durchmesser von nur 0,8 mm hat, erfolgt durch den Vergleich der Stokes- und Anti-Stokes-Raman-Intensitaeten einer intensiven Linie einer Referenzprobe. Die Natriumsilicatglaeser werden detailliert untersucht und die Verteilung der Struktureinheiten in den Natriumsilicatglaesern wird zwischen Zimmertemperatur und 900 K bestimmt. Aus der Verteilung der Strukturelemente wird eine Gleichgewichtskonstante K berechnet, welche die Disproportionierungsreaktion zwischen den Struktureinheiten in den Glaesern beschreibt. Der Wert für die Reaktionsenthalpie liegt im untersuchten Konzentrationsbereich zwischen 0 und 28 kJ/mol und haengt systematisch von der Zusammensetzung ab. Die Reaktionsenthalpie nimmt mit zunehmendem Natriumoxid-Gehalt zu.Die quantitative Auswertung der Raman-Spektren der Kaliumsilicatglaeser und der Bariumsilicatglaeser ist auf Grund deren Kristallisation bei hohen Temperaturen mit Problemen behaftet.

In this thesis we will discuss the setting of the parameters of the Max-Min Ant System. In the literature it is possible to find theoretical and practical considerations of these parameters, nevertheless it seems that they have not been studied in a joint manner. We propose a theoretical study of the relationship between them, giving the user some further knowledge at the time of setting the algorithm's parameters and some new idea are proposed. In particular, the number of ants is studied in more detail. Then we will study the settings of the Tmax and Tmin in a way which is diferent from the most commonly used technique, taking in consideration theoretical as well as experimental problems. Finally, some experiments are shown that demonstrate the validity of our proposals.

Organic substances, particularly polymers, are finding increasing use in modifying the properties of cements and concrete. Although a significant amount of research has been conducted into the modification of the mechanical properties of cements by polymers, little is known about the nature of the interface and interactions taking place between the two phases. This thesis addresses the problem of elucidating such interactions. Relevant literature is reviewed, covering the general use of polymers with cements, the chemistry of cements and polymers, adhesion and known interactions between polymers and both cements and related minerals. Although several polymer systems were studied, two in particular were selected, as being well characterized. These were: - 1) polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), the polymer derived from methyl methacrylate (MMA), and 2) an amine-cured epoxy resin system. By this approach, a methodology was developed for the examination of other polymer/cement interactions. Experiments were conducted in five main areas:- 1) polymer-cement adhesion and the feasibility of revealing interfacial regions mechanically, 2) chemical reactions between polymers and cements, 3) characterization of cement adhesion surfaces, 4) interactions affecting overall polymerisation rates, and 5) studies of polymer impregnated cements. The following conclusions were reached:- 1) The PMMA/cement interface contains calcium methacrylate as an interfacial reaction product, water being a reactant. Calcium methacrylate is detrimental to the properties of PMMA/cement composites, being highly water-soluble. 2) The pore surface of cement accelerates the polymerisation of MMA, leading to an increased molecular weight compared to polymerisation of pure MMA, minerals in hydrated cement powders having the opposite effect. 3) The investigation of reaction products presents a number of experimental problems, selection of appropriate techniques depending upon the system studied. For the two systems examined in detail, ion chromatography proved particularly useful; DTA, IRS and XPS indicated reactions, though the data was hard to interpret; XRD proving inconclusive. 4) It is impractical to reveal interfacial regions mechanically, but may be accomplished by chemical means.

The subject of collinearity of 3 points on a line is challenging for 7th- grade students. This article discusses the possibilities to demonstrate different approaches for solving collinearity of three points on a line: straight angle, axiom on the uniform mapping of an angle on a half-plane, parallel axiom, vector method, and homothetic features. The experiment was held using GEONExT to demonstrate by visual methods collinearity of three points on a line a district type of problems.

The design of satisfactory supporting and expansion devices for highway bridges is a problem which has concerned bridge design engineers for many years. The problems associated with these devices have been emphasized by the large number of short span bridges required by the current expanded highway program of expressways and interstate highways. The initial objectives of this investigation were: (1) To review and make a field study of devices used for the support of bridge superstructures and for provision of floor expansion; (2) To analyze the forces or factors which influence the design and behavior of supporting devices and floor expansion systems; and (3) To ascertain the need for future research particularly on the problems of obtaining more economical and efficient supporting and expansion devices, and determining maximum allowable distance between such devices. The experimental portion was conducted to evaluate one of the possible simple and economical solutions to the problems observed in the initial portion. The investigation reported herein is divided into four major parts or phases as follows: (1) A review of literature; (2) A survey by questionnaire of design practice of a number of state highway departments and consulting firms; (3) Field observation of existing bridges; and, (4) An experimental comparison of the dynamic behavior of rigid and elastomeric bearings.

In a series of attempts to research and document relevant sloshing type phenomena, a series of experiments have been conducted. The aim of this paper is to describe the setup and data processing of such experiments. A sloshing tank is subjected to angular motion. As a result pressure registers are obtained at several locations, together with the motion data, torque and a collection of image and video information. The experimental rig and the data acquisition systems are described. Useful information for experimental sloshing research practitioners is provided. This information is related to the liquids used in the experiments, the dying techniques, tank building processes, synchronization of acquisition systems, etc. A new procedure for reconstructing experimental data, that takes into account experimental uncertainties, is presented. This procedure is based on a least squares spline approximation of the data. Based on a deterministic approach to the first sloshing wave impact event in a sloshing experiment, an uncertainty analysis procedure of the associated first pressure peak value is described.

En hidrodinámica, el fenómeno de Sloshing se puede definir como el movimiento de la superficie libre de un fluido dentro de un contenedor sometido a fuerzas y perturbaciones externas. El fluido en cuestión experimenta violentos movimientos con importantes deformaciones de su superficie libre. La dinámica del fluido puede llegar a generar cargas hidrodinámicas considerables las cuales pueden afectar la integridad estructural y/o comprometer la estabilidad del vehículo que transporta dicho contenedor. El fenómeno de Sloshing ha sido extensivamente investigado matemática, numérica y experimentalmente, siendo el enfoque experimental el más usado debido a la complejidad del problema, para el cual los modelos matemáticos y de simulación son aun incapaces de predecir con suficiente rapidez y precisión las cargas debidas a dicho fenómeno. El flujo generado por el Sloshing usualmente se caracteriza por la presencia de un fluido multifase (gas-liquido) y turbulencia. Reducir al máximo posible la complejidad del fenómeno de Sloshing sin perder la esencia del problema es el principal reto de esta tesis doctoral, donde un trabajo experimental enfocado en casos canónicos de Sloshing es presentado y documentado con el objetivo de aumentar la comprensión de dicho fenómeno y por tanto intentar proveer información valiosa para validaciones de códigos numéricos. El fenómeno de Sloshing juega un papel importante en la industria del transporte marítimo de gas licuado (LNG). El mercado de LNG en los últimos años ha reportado un crecimiento hasta tres veces mayor al de los mercados de petróleo y gas convencionales. Ingenieros en laboratorios de investigación e ingenieros adscritos a la industria del LNG trabajan continuamente buscando soluciones económicas y seguras para contener, transferir y transportar grandes volúmenes de LNG. Los buques transportadores de LNG (LNGC) han pasado de ser unos pocos buques con capacidad de 75000 m3 hace unos treinta años, a una amplia flota con una capacidad de 140000 m3 actualmente. En creciente número, hoy día se construyen buques con capacidades que oscilan entre 175000 m3 y 250000 m3. Recientemente un nuevo concepto de buque LNG ha salido al mercado y se le conoce como FLNG. Un FLNG es un buque de gran valor añadido que solventa los problemas de extracción, licuefacción y almacenamiento del LNG, ya que cuenta con equipos de extracción y licuefacción a bordo, eliminando por tanto las tareas de transvase de las estaciones de licuefacción en tierra hacia los buques LNGC. EL LNG por tanto puede ser transferido directamente desde el FLNG hacia los buques LNGC en mar abierto. Niveles de llenado intermedios en combinación con oleaje durante las operaciones de trasvase inducen movimientos en los buques que generan por tanto el fenómeno de Sloshing dentro de los tanques de los FLNG y los LNGC. El trabajo de esta tesis doctoral lidia con algunos de los problemas del Sloshing desde un punto de vista experimental y estadístico, para ello una serie de tareas, descritas a continuación, se han llevado a cabo : 1. Un dispositivo experimental de Sloshing ha sido configurado. Dicho dispositivo ha permitido ensayar secciones rectangulares de tanques LNGC a escala con movimientos angulares de un grado de libertad. El dispositivo experimental ha sido instrumentado para realizar mediciones de movimiento, presiones, vibraciones y temperatura, así como la grabación de imágenes y videos. 2. Los impactos de olas generadas dentro de una sección rectangular de un LNGC sujeto a movimientos regulares forzados han sido estudiados mediante la caracterización del fenómeno desde un punto de vista estadístico enfocado en la repetitividad y la ergodicidad del problema. 3. El estudio de los impactos provocados por movimientos regulares ha sido extendido a un escenario más realístico mediante el uso de movimientos irregulares forzados. 4. El acoplamiento del Sloshing generado por el fluido en movimiento dentro del tanque LNGC y la disipación de la energía mecánica de un sistema no forzado de un grado de libertad (movimiento angular) sujeto a una excitación externa ha sido investigado. 5. En la última sección de esta tesis doctoral, la interacción entre el Sloshing generado dentro en una sección rectangular de un tanque LNGC sujeto a una excitación regular y un cuerpo elástico solidario al tanque ha sido estudiado. Dicho estudio corresponde a un problema de interacción fluido-estructura. Abstract In hydrodynamics, we refer to sloshing as the motion of liquids in containers subjected to external forces with large free-surface deformations. The liquid motion dynamics can generate loads which may affect the structural integrity of the container and the stability of the vehicle that carries such container. The prediction of these dynamic loads is a major challenge for engineers around the world working on the design of both the container and the vehicle. The sloshing phenomenon has been extensively investigated mathematically, numerically and experimentally. The latter has been the most fruitful so far, due to the complexity of the problem, for which the numerical and mathematical models are still incapable of accurately predicting the sloshing loads. The sloshing flows are usually characterised by the presence of multiphase interaction and turbulence. Reducing as much as possible the complexity of the sloshing problem without losing its essence is the main challenge of this phd thesis, where experimental work on selected canonical cases are presented and documented in order to better understand the phenomenon and to serve, in some cases, as an useful information for numerical validations. Liquid sloshing plays a key roll in the liquified natural gas (LNG) maritime transportation. The LNG market growth is more than three times the rated growth of the oil and traditional gas markets. Engineers working in research laboratories and companies are continuously looking for efficient and safe ways for containing, transferring and transporting the liquified gas. LNG carrying vessels (LNGC) have evolved from a few 75000 m3 vessels thirty years ago to a huge fleet of ships with a capacity of 140000 m3 nowadays and increasing number of 175000 m3 and 250000 m3 units. The concept of FLNG (Floating Liquified Natural Gas) has appeared recently. A FLNG unit is a high value-added vessel which can solve the problems of production, treatment, liquefaction and storage of the LNG because the vessel is equipped with a extraction and liquefaction facility. The LNG is transferred from the FLNG to the LNGC in open sea. The combination of partial fillings and wave induced motions may generate sloshing flows inside both the LNGC and the FLNG tanks. This work has dealt with sloshing problems from a experimental and statistical point of view. A series of tasks have been carried out: 1. A sloshing rig has been set up. It allows for testing tanks with one degree of freedom angular motion. The rig has been instrumented to measure motions, pressure and conduct video and image recording. 2. Regular motion impacts inside a rectangular section LNGC tank model have been studied, with forced motion tests, in order to characterise the phenomenon from a statistical point of view by assessing the repeatability and practical ergodicity of the problem. 3. The regular motion analysis has been extended to an irregular motion framework in order to reproduce more realistic scenarios. 4. The coupled motion of a single degree of freedom angular motion system excited by an external moment and affected by the fluid moment and the mechanical energy dissipation induced by sloshing inside the tank has been investigated. 5. The last task of the thesis has been to conduct an experimental investigation focused on the strong interaction between a sloshing flow in a rectangular section of a LNGC tank subjected to regular excitation and an elastic body clamped to the tank. It is thus a fluid structure interaction problem.

Vessel dynamic positioning (DP) systems are based on conventional PID-type controllers and an extended Kalman filter. However, they present a difficult tuning procedure, and the closed-loop performance varies with environmental or loading conditions since the dynamics of the vessel are eminently nonlinear. Gain scheduling is normally used to address the nonlinearity of the system. To overcome these problems, a sliding mode control was evaluated. This controller is robust to variations in environmental and loading conditions, it maintains performance and stability for a large range of conditions, and presents an easy tuning methodology. The performance of the controller was evaluated numerically and experimentally in order to address its effectiveness. The results are compared with those obtained from conventional PID controller. This study describes the pedagogical impact of real-world experimental projects undertaken as part of an advanced undergraduate Fluid Mechanics subject at an Australian university. The projects have been organised to complement traditional lectures and introduce students to the challenges of professional design, physical modelling, data collection and analysis. The physical model studies combine experimental, analytical and numerical work in order to develop students’ abilities to tackle real-world problems. A first study illustrates the differences between ideal and real fluid flow force predictions based upon model tests of buildings in a large size wind tunnel used for research and professional testing. A second study introduces the complexity arising from unsteady non-uniform wave loading on a sheltered pile. The teaching initiative is supported by feedback from undergraduate students. The pedagogy of the course and projects is discussed with reference to experiential, project-based and collaborative learning. The practical work complements traditional lectures and tutorials, and provides opportunities which cannot be learnt in the classroom, real or virtual. Student feedback demonstrates a strong interest for the project phases of the course. This was associated with greater motivation for the course, leading in turn to lower failure rates. In terms of learning outcomes, the primary aim is to enable students to deliver a professional report as the final product, where physical model data are compared to ideal-fluid flow calculations and real-fluid flow analyses. Thus the students are exposed to a professional design approach involving a high level of expertise in fluid mechanics, with sufficient academic guidance to achieve carefully defined learning goals, while retaining sufficient flexibility for students to construct there own learning goals. The overall pedagogy is a blend of problem-based and project-based learning, which reflects academic research and professional practice. The assessment is a mix of peer-assessed oral presentations and written reports that aims to maximise student reflection and development. Student feedback indicated a strong motivation for courses that include a well-designed project component.

The assessment of groundwater conditions within an unconfined aquifer with a periodic boundary condition is of interest in many hydrological and environmental problems. A two-dimensional numerical model for density dependent variably saturated groundwater flow, SUTRA (Voss, C.I., 1984. SUTRA: a finite element simulation model for saturated-unsaturated, fluid-density dependent ground-water flow with energy transport or chemically reactive single species solute transport. US Geological Survey, National Center, Reston, VA) is modified in order to be able to simulate the groundwater flow in unconfined aquifers affected by a periodic boundary condition. The basic flow equation is changed from pressure-form to mixed-form. The model is also adjusted to handle a seepage-face boundary condition. Experiments are conducted to provide data for the groundwater response to the periodic boundary condition for aquifers with both vertical and sloping faces. The performance of the numerical model is assessed using those data. The results of pressure- and mixed-form approximations are compared and the improvement achieved through the mixed-form of the equation is demonstrated. The ability of the numerical model to simulate the water table and seepage-face is tested by modelling some published experimental data. Finally the numerical model is successfully verified against present experimental results to confirm its ability to simulate complex boundary conditions like the periodic head and the seepage-face boundary condition on the sloping face. Background: Studies investigating the association between alcohol use and cognitive disorders in the elderly population have produced divergent results. Moreover, the role of alcohol in cognitive dysfunction is not clear. The aims of this study were to estimate the prevalence of alcohol-related problems in an elderly population from Brazil and to investigate their association with cognitive and functional impairment (CFI) and dementia. Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study was performed. A sample of 1,145 elderly people was examined in 2 phases. Several instruments were utilized in the first phase: the CAGE questionnaire was used to identify potential cases of alcohol-related problems, and a screening test for dementia was used to estimate CFI. The CAMDEX interview (Cambridge Examination) and DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition) criteria were used for the clinical diagnosis of dementia in the second phase. Results: ""Heavy alcohol use"" (CAGE >= 2) was found in 92 subjects (prevalence: 8.2%). It was associated with gender (males, p < 0.001), low education (only in females, p = 0.002), and low socioeconomic level (p = 0.001, in females; p = 0.002, in males). The Mini Mental State Examination exhibited a nonlinear relationship with alcohol-related problems in females; ""mild-moderate alcohol use"" (CAGE < 2) presented the highest score. A significant association between alcohol-related problems and cognitive dysfunction was found only in females. ""Heavy alcohol use"" was associated with higher CFI and dementia rates compared to ""mild-moderate alcohol use"" (p = 0.003 and p < 0.001, respectively). ""Mild-moderate alcohol use"" had a tendency of association with lower CFI and dementia rates when compared to ""no alcohol use"" (p = 0.063 and 0.050, respectively). Conclusion: Our findings suggest that alcohol use does not have a linear relationship with cognitive decline.

The main goal of this paper is to analyze the behavior of nonmono- tone hybrid tabu search approaches when solving systems of nonlinear inequalities and equalities through the global optimization of an appro- priate merit function. The algorithm combines global and local searches and uses a nonmonotone reduction of the merit function to choose the local search. Relaxing the condition aims to call the local search more often and reduces the overall computational e ort. Two variants of a perturbed pattern search method are implemented as local search. An experimental study involving a variety of problems available in the lit- erature is presented.

The IEEE 802.15.4/Zigbee protocols are a promising technology for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). This paper shares our experience on the implementation and use of these protocols and related technologies in WSNs. We present problems and challenges we have been facing in implementing an IEEE 802.15.4/ZigBee stack for TinyOS in a two-folded perspective: IEEE 802.15.4/ZigBee protocol standards limitations (ambiguities and open issues) and technological limitations (hardware and software). Concerning the former, we address challenges for building scalable and synchronized multi-cluster ZigBee networks, providing a trade-off between timeliness and energy-efficiency. On the latter issue, we highlight implementation problems in terms of hardware, timer handling and operating system limitations. We also report on our experience from experimental test-beds, namely on physical layer aspects such as coexistence problems between IEEE 802.15.4 and 802.11 radio channels.
