A new way of flux-splitting, termed as the wave-particle splitting is presented for developing upwind methods for solving Euler equations of gas dynamics. Based on this splitting, two new upwind methods termed as Acoustic Flux Vector Splitting (AFVS) and Acoustic Flux Difference Splitting (AFDS) methods are developed. A new Boltzmann scheme, which closely resembles the wave-particle splitting, is developed using the kinetic theory of gases. This method, termed as Peculiar Velocity based Upwind (PVU) method, uses the concept of peculiar velocity for upwinding. A special feature of all these methods that the unidirectional and multidirectional parts of the flux vector are treated separately. Extensive computations done using these schemes demonstrate the soundness of the ideas.

The study of directional derivative lead to the development of a rotationally invariant kinetic upwind method (KUMARI)3 which avoids dimension by dimension splitting. The method is upwind and rotationally invariant and hence truly multidimensional or multidirectional upwind scheme. The extension of KUMARI to second order is as well presented.

A Lagrangian lattice Boltzmann method for solving Euler equations is proposed. The key step in formulating this method is the introduction of the displacement distribution function. The equilibrium distribution function consists of macroscopic Lagrangian variables at time steps n and n + 1. It is different from the standard lattice Boltzmann method. In this method the element, instead of each particle, is required to satisfy the basic law. The element is considered as one large particle, which results in simpler version than the corresponding Eulerian one, because the advection term disappears here. Our numerical examples successfully reproduce the classical results.

In the present paper we consider second order compact upwind schemes with a space split time derivative (CABARET) applied to one-dimensional compressible gas flows. As opposed to the conventional approach associated with incorporating adjacent space cells we use information from adjacent time layer to improve the solution accuracy. Taking the first order Roe scheme as the basis we develop a few higher (i.e. second within regions of smooth solutions) order accurate difference schemes. One of them (CABARET3) is formulated in a two-time-layer form, which makes it most simple and robust. Supersonic and subsonic shock-tube tests are used to compare the new schemes with several well-known second-order TVD schemes. In particular, it is shown that CABARET3 is notably more accurate than the standard second-order Roe scheme with MUSCL flux splitting.

Aerodynamic generation of sound is governed by the Navier–Stokes equations while acoustic propagation in a non-uniform medium is effectively described by the linearised Euler equations. Different numerical schemes are required for the efficient solution of these two sets of equations, and therefore, coupling techniques become an essential issue. Two types of one-way coupling between the flow solver and the acoustic solver are discussed: (a) for aerodynamic sound generated at solid surfaces, and (b) in the free stream. Test results indicate how the coupling achieves the necessary accuracy so that Computational Fluid Dynamics codes can be used in aeroacoustic simulations.

In this paper a cell by cell anisotropic adaptive mesh technique is added to an existing staggered mesh Lagrange plus remap finite element ALE code for the solution of the Euler equations. The quadrilateral finite elements may be subdivided isotropically or anisotropically and a hierarchical data structure is employed. An efficient computational method is proposed, which only solves on the finest level of resolution that exists for each part of the domain with disjoint or hanging nodes being used at resolution transitions. The Lagrangian, equipotential mesh relaxation and advection (solution remapping) steps are generalised so that they may be applied on the dynamic mesh. It is shown that for a radial Sod problem and a two-dimensional Riemann problem the anisotropic adaptive mesh method runs over eight times faster.

Numerical results are presented and compared for three conservative upwind difference schemes for the Euler equations when applied to two standard test problems. This includes consideration of the effect of treating part of the flux balance as a source, and a comparison of different averaging of the flow variables. Two of the schemes are also shown to be equivalent in their implementation, while being different in construction and having different approximate Jacobians. (C) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. In a recent paper [P. Glaister, Conservative upwind difference schemes for compressible flows in a Duct, Comput. Math. Appl. 56 (2008) 1787–1796] numerical schemes based on a conservative linearisation are presented for the Euler equations governing compressible flows of an ideal gas in a duct of variable cross-section, and in [P. Glaister, Conservative upwind difference schemes for compressible flows of a real gas, Comput. Math. Appl. 48 (2004) 469–480] schemes based on this philosophy are presented for real gas flows with slab symmetry. In this paper we seek to extend these ideas to encompass compressible flows of real gases in a duct. This will incorporate the handling of additional terms arising out of the variable geometry and the non-ideal nature of the gas.
