Generally, arithmetic and geometric progressions are taught separately from ane and exponential functions, only by the use of memorized formulas and without any concern of showing students how these contents are related. This paper aims at presenting a way of teaching such contents in an integrated way, starting with the definition of ane and exponential functions relating them to situations from the daily life of the students. Then, characteristics and graphics of those functions are presented and, subsequently, arithmetic and geometric progression are shown as a restriction of the ane and exponential functions. Thus, the study of the progressions is introduced based on the functions mentioned above using situations from students daily lives as examples

The purpose of this paper is to draw on research that discusses the relationship between interest and metacognitive functions and its effect on engaging students in the writing process. Results indicate students who are interested in their writing activities engage in metacognitive strategies, remain focused, and complete their tasks.

Education for health is a process in which all public health and medical care personnel are involved. People learn both formally (planned learning experiences) and informally (unplanned learning experiences). Since the patient, the client, the consummer and the community expect public health and medical care personnel to assist them with health and disease issues and problems, the response of the professional "educates" the customer whether the professional intends to educate or not. Therefore, it is incumbent on all public health and medical care professionals to understand their educational functions and their role in health education. It is also important that the role of the specialist in education be clear. The specialist, as to all other specialists, has an in-depth knowledge of his area of expertise, i.e., the teaching/learning process; s/he may function as a consultant to others to enhance the educational potential of their role or s/he may work with a team or with communities or groups of patients. Specific competencies and knowledge are required of the health education specialist; and there is a body of learning and social change theory which provides a frame of reference for planning, implementing and evaluating educational programs. Working with others to enhance their potential to learn and to make informed decisions about health/disease issues is the hallmark of the health education specialist.

Aquest estudi forma part del projecte eLene-TLC1 Virtual Campus (2007-2008) recolzat pel programa eLearning de la Comissió Europea. L'objectiu d'aquest projecte és que els professors i els estudiants facin el millor ús possible de les TIC en l'educació superior, preparant als professors per als estudiants de la generació xarxa, permetent als estudiants a la transferència de coneixements i prà ctiques de la vida quotidiana per al seu aprenentatge i estimular tant la integració plena de prà ctiques innovadores d'ensenyament i d'aprenentatge possibilitades per un entorn tecnològic en constant evolució. Per tal de cobrir part d'aquest objectiu general, es va concebre un estudi per examinar les competències en TIC professors d'Educació Superior en entorns d'aprenentatge en lÃnia.

Background: Children born very preterm (<32 weeks’ gestational age; VPT) and/or very low birth weight (<1500 g; VLBW) are at high risk of deficits in executive functions, namely inhibition, working memory, and shifting. Both, gestational age and socioeconomic factors, such as parental education, are known to influence executive functions, with children born at lower gestational age and with lower educated parents displaying worse executive skills. This study aimed to investigate if maternal and paternal education moderated the relationship between gestational age and executive functions in VPT/VLBW children aged 8-12 years. It was hypothesised that the disadvantageous effect of low gestational age could be buffered more easily in families with higher educational background. Methods: Sixty VPT/VLBW children born in the cohort of 1998-2003 were recruited. All children completed executive function tasks (inhibition, working memory, and shifting). Results: There was a significant dose-response-relationship between gestational age and inhibition, with children being born at earlier gestational age showing worse inhibition. However, neither maternal nor paternal education moderated the relationship between gestational age and executive functions significantly. Conclusion: children than parental education. The disadvantageous effect of low gestational age was equal in children with higher and lower educated parents. However, the impact of gestational age and parental education on executive functions may differ depending on the socioeconomic spectrum of the study sample.

Balance functions have been measured for charged-particle pairs, identified charged-pion pairs, and identified charged-kaon pairs in Au + Au, d + Au, and p + p collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider using the STAR detector. These balance functions are presented in terms of relative pseudorapidity, Delta eta, relative rapidity, Delta y, relative azimuthal angle, Delta phi, and invariant relative momentum, q(inv). For charged-particle pairs, the width of the balance function in terms of Delta eta scales smoothly with the number of participating nucleons, while HIJING and UrQMD model calculations show no dependence on centrality or system size. For charged-particle and charged-pion pairs, the balance functions widths in terms of Delta eta and Delta y are narrower in central Au + Au collisions than in peripheral collisions. The width for central collisions is consistent with thermal blast-wave models where the balancing charges are highly correlated in coordinate space at breakup. This strong correlation might be explained by either delayed hadronization or limited diffusion during the reaction. Furthermore, the narrowing trend is consistent with the lower kinetic temperatures inherent to more central collisions. In contrast, the width of the balance function for charged-kaon pairs in terms of Delta y shows little centrality dependence, which may signal a different production mechanism for kaons. The widths of the balance functions for charged pions and kaons in terms of q(inv) narrow in central collisions compared to peripheral collisions, which may be driven by the change in the kinetic temperature.

This paper aims to present an overview on characteristics, roles and responsibilities of those who arc in charge. of the Corporate Educational Systems in several organizations from distinct industries in Brazil, based on a research carried out by the authors. The analysis compares what is available in the literature on this subject so that it may provide insights on how Brazilian companies have dealt with the difficult task of developing competences in their employees. Special attention is given to the Chief Learning Officer`s role (or the lack of it) - someone who was supposed to be in charge of the employees` development processes in a given organization. The results show that this role has not been a clear or unanimous concept yet, neither in terms of the functions to be performed nor the so-called strategic importance given to this sort of executive. This research is both exploratory and descriptive, and due to the use of intentional sample, the inferences are limited. Despite these limitations, its comments may enrich the discussion on this subject.

The neuropathological changes associated with Huntington's disease (HD) are most marked in the head of the caudate nucleus and, to a lesser extent, in the putamen and globus pallidus, suggesting that at least part of the language impairments found in patients with HD may result from non-thalamic subcortical (NTS) pathology. The present study aimed to test the hypothesis that a signature profile of impaired language functions is found in patients who have sustained damage to the non-thalamic subcortex, either focally induced or resulting from neurodegenerative pathology. The language abilities of a group of patients with Huntington's disease (n=13) were compared with those of an age- and education-matched group of patients with chronic NTS lesions following stroke (n=13) and a non-neurologically impaired control group (n=13). The three groups were compared on language tasks that assessed both primary and more complex language abilities. The primary language battery consisted of The Western Aphasia Battery and The Boston Naming Test, whilst the more complex cognitive-linguistic battery employed selected subtests from The Test of Language Competence-Expanded, The Test of Word Knowledge and The Word Test-Revised. On many of the tests of primary language function from the Western Aphasia Battery, both the HD and NTS participants performed in a similar manner to the control participants. The language performances of the HD participants were significantly more impaired (p<0.05 using modified Bonferroni adjustments) than the control group, however, on various lexico-semantic tasks (e. g. the Boston Naming Test and providing definitions), on both single-word and sentence-level generative tasks (e. g. category fluency and formulating sentences), and on tasks which required interpretation of ambiguous, figurative and inferential meaning. The difficulties that patients with HD experienced with tasks assessing complex language abilities were strikingly similar, both qualitatively and quantitatively, to the language profile produced by NTS participants. The results provide evidence to suggest that a signature language profile is associated with damage to the non-thalamic subcortex resulting from either focal neurological insult or a degenerative disease.

Este estudo tem como objetivos: (1) conhecer as práticas desenvolvidas numa organização do Ensino Superior Público Português; (2) conhecer a tipologia das práticas de GRH de cariz tradicional e de cariz estratégico; (3) perceber em que medida as práticas de GRH estão relacionadas com a área de qualificação dos responsáveis do departamento de RH; (4) averiguar o grau de satisfação que os trabalhadores sentem com as Práticas de Gestão de Recursos Humanos desenvolvidas e a sua relação com a área de qualificação dos responsáveis do departamento de RH. Foi utilizada uma metodologia mista, que possibilita ampliar a obtenção de resultados em abordagens investigativas, proporcionando ganhos relevantes para a pesquisa. É realizado um primeiro estudo exploratório, que utiliza uma metodologia mista quantitativa e qualitativa, com recurso a uma entrevista semiestruturada e inquérito realizados aos responsáveis de RH, e que tem como objetivos identificar e caracterizar as Práticas de GRH vigentes na Organização e, consequentemente, averiguar se se aproximam das designadas na literatura, assim como averiguar o grau de intervenção do DRH no desenvolvimento das PGRH e caraterizar o perfil do responsável de RH na Organização, averiguando se a área de formação de RH influencia as Práticas de GRH desenvolvidas. No segundo estudo, recorremos a uma metodologia quantitativa com recurso ao inquérito por questionário, aplicado aos trabalhadores que exercem funções a tempo integral, para averiguar o grau de satisfação dos trabalhadores em relação à s Práticas de Gestão de Recursos Humanos. Na compilação dos dois estudos foi nosso objetivo obter respostas à s questões que orientaram a nossa investigação. Na parte final da dissertação são discutidos os principais resultados obtidos e apresentadas as conclusões do estudo aqui levado a cabo. Os resultados sugerem que: 1) as PGRH existentes são essencialmente de cariz tradicional, em especial a gestão administrativa; 2) as PGRH predominantes são: o Planeamento de Recursos Humanos, a Análise e Descrição de Funções, o Recrutamento e Seleção, a Formação e Desenvolvimento, a Gestão Administrativa, a Comunicação e a Partilha de Informação, Ética e Deontologia e o Estatuto Disciplinar; 3) existe pouco recurso ao outsourcing para as PGRH; 4) o grau de intervenção DRH baseia-se em atividades de cariz mais administrativo; 5) as práticas tradicionais de RH são aquelas que requerem mais tempo ao DRH; 6) não existe relação entre o tipo de PGRH e a área de qualificação do responsável do DRH; 7) as PGRH são realizadas seguindo essencialmente as normas legais e regras rÃgidas da GRH na AP; 8) algumas PGRH não são entendidas em contexto da AP, como importantes pelos gestores, embora já sejam desenvolvidos alguns procedimentos dessas práticas; 9) a PGRH da formação e desenvolvimento não é corretamente desenvolvida e não dá cumprimento ao estipulado na lei; 10) a gestão de carreiras e o sistema de compensação e recompensas são entendidas como inexistentes, porque não existem promoções e progressões desde 2005; 11) a avaliação do desempenho é um sistema burocrático e ritualista com fins de promoção e compensação, sem efeitos práticos no momento atual, e que causa insatisfação e o sentimento de injustiça; 12) existem problemas de comunicação quanto a partilha e uniformização de procedimentos entre UO; 13) a satisfação dos trabalhadores é maior com as PGRH de tipo tradicional, nomeadamente na gestão administrativa, recrutamento e seleção, análise e descrição de funções, acolhimento, integração e socialização 14) a satisfação é menor na gestão de carreiras, no sistema de compensação e recompensas e na avaliação do desempenho; 15) quanto a relação entre o grau de satisfação e as caracterÃsticas sócio demográficas e profissionais dos inquiridos, os casos com significância mostram que os trabalhadores com 10 ou mais anos de antiguidade tendem a sentir mais satisfação com as práticas em GRH; 16) existe mais satisfação dos trabalhadores das UO onde o responsável de DRH possui formação na área de RH.

Although NK cells use invariant receptors to identify diseased cells, they nevertheless adapt to their environment, including the presence of certain MHC class I (MHC-I) molecules. This NK cell education, which is mediated by inhibitory receptors specific for MHC-I molecules, changes the responsiveness of activating NK cell receptors (licensing) and modifies the repertoire of MHC-I receptors used by NK cells. The fact that certain MHC-I receptors have the unusual capacity to recognize MHC-I molecules expressed by other cells (trans) and by the NK cell itself (cis) has raised the question regarding possible contributions of the two types of interactions to NK cell education. Although the analysis of an MHC-I receptor variant suggested a role for cis interaction for NK cell licensing, adoptive NK cell transfer experiments supported a key role for trans recognition. To reconcile some of these findings, we have analyzed the impact of cell type-specific deletion of an MHC-I molecule and of a novel MHC-I receptor variant on the education of murine NK cells when these mature under steady-state conditions in vivo. We find that MHC-I expression by NK cells (cis) and by T cells (trans), and MHC-I recognition in cis and in trans, are both needed for NK cell licensing. Unexpectedly, modifications of the MHC-I receptor repertoire are chiefly dependent on cis binding, which provides additional support for an essential role for this unconventional type of interaction for NK cell education. These data suggest that two separate functions of MHC-I receptors are needed to adapt NK cells to self-MHC-I.
