Rocket species have been shown to have very high concentrations of glucosinolates and flavonols, which have numerous positive health benefits with regular consumption. In this review we highlight how breeders and processors of rocket species can utilize genomic and phytochemical research to improve varieties and enhance the nutritive benefits to consumers. Plant breeders are increasingly looking to new technologies such as HPLC, UPLC, LC-MS and GC-MS to screen populations for their phytochemical content to inform plant selections. Here we collate the research that has been conducted to-date in rocket, and summarise all glucosinolate and flavonol compounds identified in the species. We emphasize the importance of the broad screening of populations for phytochemicals and myrosinase degradation products, as well as unique traits that may be found in underutilized gene bank resources. We also stress that collaboration with industrial partners is becoming essential for long-term plant breeding goals through research.

Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS) was used to obtain glucosinolate and flavonol content for 35 rocket accessions and commercial varieties. 13 glucosinolates and 11 flavonol compounds were identified. Semi-quantitative methods were used to estimate concentrations of both groups of compounds. Minor glucosinolate composition was found to be different between accessions; concentrations varied significantly. Flavonols showed differentiation between genera, with Diplotaxis accumulating quercetin glucosides and Eruca accumulating kaempferol glucosides. Several compounds were detected in each genus that have only previously been reported in the other. We highlight how knowledge of phytochemical content and concentration can be used to breed new, nutritionally superior varieties. We also demonstrate the effects of controlled environment conditions on the accumulations of glucosinolates and flavonols and explore the reasons for differences with previous studies. We stress the importance of consistent experimental design between research groups to effectively compare and contrast results.

Consumption of green leafy vegetables is associated with reduced risk of several types of cancer and cardiovascular disease. These beneficial effects are attributed to a range of phytochemicals including flavonoids and glucosinolates, both of which are found in high levels in Brassicaceous crops. Rocket is the general name attributed to cultivars of Eruca sativa and Diplotaxis tenufolia, known as salad rocket and wild rocket, respectively. We have shown that different light levels during the cultivation period of these crops have a significant impact on the levels of flavonoids present in the crop at harvest, with over 15-fold increase achieved in quercetin, isorhamnetin, and cyanidin in high light conditions. Postharvest storage further affects the levels of both flavonoids and glucosinolates, with cyanidin increasing during shelf life and some glucosinolates, such as glucoiberverin, being reduced over the same storage period. In vitro assays using human colon cell lines demonstrate that glucosinolate-rich extracts of Eruca sativa cv. Sky, but not Diplotaxis tenufolia cv. Voyager, confer significant resistance to oxidative stress on the cells, which is indicative of the chemoprotective properties of the leaves from this species. Our findings indicate that both pre and postharvest environment and genotypic selection, when developing new lines of Brassicaceous vegetables, are important considerations with the goal of improving human nutrition and health.

A study of the reproductive biology of B. chinensis (L.) DC. (Iridaceae) was realized comprising floral biology and breeding systems. The floral biology studies included analyses of nectar production, occurence of osmophores, corolla pigments, ultraviolet reflexion and absortion patterns, viability of pollen, pollinators and flower visitors. The breeding systems were studied taking into account the results of manual pollinators tests. B. chinensis is self-compatible bul cross-pollination is more frequent. The effective pollinators are Plebeia droryana (Friese, 1906) (45,7%), Trigona spinipes (Fabricius, 1793) (27,3%), Tetragonisca angustula (Latreille, 1811) (9,3%). Others insects visitors are considered nectar and pollen thieves. The flowering begins generally in January and February. The complete reproductive cicle, as here considered, begining with floral bud production ending with development of mature fruits, lasts January to June. Seed dispersion is ornitocoric.

The germination of seeds of Emilia sonchifolia (2n) and E. fosgerbii (4n) was analysed and our results indicate that the former present light insensitive seeds and the latter germinated only under continuous white light. The germination of seeds under shade light presented no differences between both species, However under continuous white light, which maintain 70% of Pfr, the velocity of germination was greater in Emilia sonchifolia when compared to Emilia fosbergii, indicating that the threshold of 4n seeds were greater than 2n seeds. The analysis of the fluence response curves for etiolating process indicated that the process presented no differences between both species. The same was observed for the effect of the shade light in the etiolating process.

Seasonal growth was studied in the slow-growing crustose lichen Rhizocarpon geographicum (L.) DC. in an area of South Gwynedd, Wales. Radial growth rate (RGR) of a sample of 20 thalli was measured in situ at three-month intervals over 51 months on a southeast-facing rock surface. There were five periods of significant growth: July-September of 1993, 1994 and 1995, in January-March of 1996, and in April-June of 1997. In four of these periods, growth coincided with a mean temperature maximum (Tmax) over a three-month period exceeding 15°C and three of the maxima with greater than 450 sunshine hours. Two of the growth maxima coincided with periods of total rainfall exceeding 300 mm and one with greater than 50 rain days in a three-month period. There were no significant linear correlations between RGR and the climatic variables measured. However, there were significant non-linear relationships between RGR and Tmax, the mean temperature minimum (Tmin), the total number of air and ground frosts and the number of rain days in a growth period, the relationship with Tmax being the most significant. Hence, in south Gwynedd, maximum growth of R. geographicum occurs in any season although the period July-September appears to be the most favourable. Relationships between growth and climatic variables were non-linear, temperature having the most significant influence on seasonal growth. ©2006 Balaban.

Variations in hypothallus width were studied in relation to radial growth in the lichen Rhizocarpon geographicum (L.) DC. in South Gwynedd, Wales, UK. Variations were present both within and between thalli and in successive three-month growth periods, but there was no significant variation associated with thallus size. In individual thalli, there were increases and reductions in hypothallus width in successive three-month growth periods attributable to hypothallus growth and changes at the margin of the areolae. Total radial growth over 18 months was positively correlated with initial hypothallus width. These results suggest: 1) individual thalli of similar size vary considerably in hypothallus width, 2) fluctuations in the location of the margin of the areolae in successive three month periods is an important factor determining this variability, 3) hypothallus width predicts subsequent radial growth over 18 months, and 4) variation in hypothallus; width is a factor determining between thallus variability in radial growth rates in yellow-green species of Rhizocarpon.

Carbohydrate concentrations in the marginal hypothallus and areolae of the crustose lichen Rhizocarpon geographicum (L.) DC. were measured in north Wales, U.K. using gas chromatography. Ribitol, arabitol, and mannitol were the most abundant carbohydrates while a- glucose ß-glucose, fructose, sucrose, and trehalose were present in smaller amounts. The concentrations of arabitol, ribitol, mannitol, fructose, and a-glucose were greater in the areolae while the concentration of trehalose was greater in the hypothallus. Concentrations of carbohydrates varied little between sample days. Concentrations of polyols in the hypothallus were not correlated with those in the areolae. These results suggest: 1) the hypothallus has a lower demand for carbohydrates than the areolae or there is limited transport from areolae to hypothallus, 2) increased trehalose in the non-lichenised hypothallus may be an adaptation to withstand stress and desiccation, and 3) polyols are partitioned differently in the hypothallus and areolae.

A cv.
