Identification and evaluation of agents isolated from traditionally used herbs against Ophiophagus hannah venom

The aim of this study was firstly to identify active molecules in herbs, that are traditionally used for the treatment of snake bite, such as Curcuma antinaia, Curcuma contravenenum, Andrographis paniculata, and Tanacetum parthenium; secondly to test similar structurally related molecules and finally to prepare and evaluate an efficient formulation against Ophiophagus hannah venom intoxification. Three labdane based compounds, including labdane dialdehyde, labdane lactone, and labdane trialdehyde and two lactones including 14-deoxy-11,12-didehydroandrographolide and parthenolide were isolated by column chromatography and characterised. Using the isolated rat phrenic nerve-hemidiaphragm preparation, the antagonistic effect of crude extracts, isolated compounds and prepared formulations were measured in vitro on the inhibition of the neuromuscular transmission. Inhibition on muscle contraction, produced by the 5 μg/mL venom, was reversed by test agents in organ bath preparations. A labdane trialdehyde, isolated from C. contravenenum, was identified as the best antagonising agent in the low micromolar range. Tests on formulations of the most potent C. contravenenum extract showed, that the suppository with witepsol H15 was an effective medicine against O. hannah venom. This study elucidated the active compounds, accounting for the antivenin activity of traditionally used herbs and suggested the most suitable formulation, which may help to develop potent medicines for the treatment of snake bite in the future.

Colonialism, political unconscious and cognitive mapping in the space of the film "Captain Phillips"

The purpose of this article has been made through a Marxist analysis of the US film "Captain Phillips" (PaulGreengrass, 2013), based on a true story. I have found how the evolution of capitalism in the West continuesto consolidate the belief reified in a historical and geographical superiority of the political and socioeconomicwestern models regarding Africa and Asia lowers models. At the same time, through categories like dialecticalmaterialism, criticism of diffusionist theory and application of cognitive mapping to large geopoliticalspaces located in most poor areas of the world, I have realized a remark about currently being articulatingthe political unconscious of working class in rich countries and the poor in poor countries, establishing arelationship between the ideological representation that takes an individual from his historical reality (ona scale that moves from local to global), and how he has developed a mental ability to escape of the responsibilityto make a critical review of what's happening around him in all areas. Finally, through physicalspace captured in the film, I have realized a materialist critique of globalized business process that takesplace through the carriage of goods, outlining spatial and cognitively limits of the mentality of our time, bothamong "winners"as among the "losers", based on the spatial movement of capital.

Synonymy of Perkinsus olseni Lester & Davis, 1981 and Perkinsus atlanticus Azevedo, 1989 and an update on the phylogenetic position of the genus Perkinsus

Sequences of the rRNA nontranscribed spacer (NTS) were determined for six isolates of Perkinsus olseni, seven isolates of Perkinsus sp. from Anadara trapezia and one isolate of Perkinsus sp. from Austrovenus stutchburyi. These sequences were compared with previously published NTS sequences for R atlanticus, P. marinus and P. andrewsi. Consensus sequences for Perkinsus olseni, the Perkinsus isolates and P. atlanticus were approximately 98-99% similar to each other but only 65-79% similar to P. marinus and P. andrewsi sequences. Some individual P. olseni sequences were less similar to each other (97.4%) than they were to P. atlanticus sequences (97.8-98.2%), therefore NTS provides further evidence that P. atlanticus, P. olseni, Perkinsus sp. from Anadara trapezia and Perkinsus sp. from Austrovenus stutchburyi are conspecific. We propose that P. atlanticus be synonymised with P. olseni Lester & Davis, 1981 which has taxonomic priority, and that Perkinsus sp. from Anadara trapezia and Perkinsus sp. from Austrovenus stutchburyi belong to R olseni sensu lato as well. A phylogenetic analysis of SSU rDNA, incorporating recently published Perkinsus sequences, supports the placement of the Perkinsus species with Parvilucifera infectans within the Dinoflagellata.

Efeitos de fitoreguladores no desenvolvimento da soja (Glycine max cv. Davis)

Verificou-se, em condições de casa de vegetação, o efeito de fitoreguladores no desenvolvimento da soja (Glycine max cv. Davis). Aplicou-se por pulverização, 21 dias após a semeadura, cloreto (2-cloroetil) trimetilamônio (CCC) 2000 ppm ácido succínico-2,2-dimetilhidrazida (SADH) 4000 ppm, ácido giberélico (GA) 100 ppm, ácido indolilacético (IAA) 100 ppm, além do controle. Realizaram-se determinações semanais da altura da planta, número total de folhas, número de folhas na haste principal, número de folhas nas hastes secundárias e diâmetro do caule. Utilizou-se delineamento inteiramente casualizado com 6 repetições e procedeu-se a comparação de médias pelo teste Tukey (5%). Plantas tratadas com GA mostraram

Desenvolvimento dos meritalos de soja (Glycine max cv. Davis) sob efeito de fitoreguladores

Determinou-se em condições de casa de vegetação o efeito de fitoreguladores no desenvolvimento dos meritalos da soja 'Davis'. Aplicou-se através de pulverização, 21 dias após a semeadura, cloreto (2-cloroetil) trimetilamônio (CCC) 2000 ppm, ácido succínico -2,2 - dimetilhidrazida (SADH) 4000 ppm, ácido geberélico (GA) 100 ppm, ácido indolilacético (IAA) 100 ppm, além do controle. Efetuaram-se determinações semanais do número de meritalos e do comprimento do segundo e quarto merítalo das plantas de soja. Utilizous-e delineamento inteiramente casualizado com 6 repetições e procedeu-se à comparação de médias pelo teste Tukey (5%). Tratamento com GA aumentou o numero de meritalos da soja 'Davis'. Não se notaram diferenças significativas no comprimento do segundo meritalo das plantas tratadas com fitoreguladores. SADH reduziu o comprimento do quarto meritalo das plantas de soja.
