Stable single-frequency and single-polarization distributed-feedback (DFB) fiber laser was realized by giving a pressure on the phase shift region of the fiber grating. The output wavelength of the DFB fiber laser is 1053 nm. When the pump power of 980 nm laser diode is 100 and 254 mW, the output power can reach 8.3 and 37.1 mW and the polarization extinction ratio was 26 and 20 dB, respectively. After chopped by Acousto-optic modulator (0.3 Hz), the pulse peak value variance is 4.65%(peak to peak) and 1.098% (RMS) for 31 min. (C) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A novel grating structure is proposed and demonstrated to obtain stable dual-wavelength (DW) distributed-feedback (DFB) fiber lasers at room temperature. The proposed grating is based on a symmetrical structure, where one half is periodically sampled by "0"-to-"pi" period and the other half is done by "pi"-to-"0" period. This structure can create two separated resonance cavities and hence achieve the stable DW lasing operation. By fabricating the proposed grating on a piece of Er: Yb-codoped fiber, we experimentally obtain a stable DW-DFB fiber laser with wavelength spacing of similar to 440 pm at room temperature.

Lasers with random distributed feedback (DFB) owing to Rayleigh scattering in optical fibers [1] have attracted a great interest: a number of papers demonstrating new laser schemes and applications have been proposed [2-7] recently. Moreover, the generation output power and, more generally, generation power distribution could be described both analytically and numerically within simple balance models [8-9]. However, spectral properties of random DFB fiber lasers are not studied except some attempt made in [10]. Generation spectrum of random DFB fiber laser is quite broad (more than 1 nm), and physical mechanisms of its formation and broadening are still unclear. There is no any practical solution up to date to minimize the generation spectrum width. Here we experimentally show the way to minimize the generation spectral width. © 2013 IEEE.

A simple technique based on superimposed cavities structure for direct real-time assessment of a DFB fiber laser mode condition during operation is demonstrated and used to provide a cavity mode conditioning feedback mechanism to optimize output performance. Significant improvements to the output performance and robustness are achieved over the entire pump power range without ambient isolation.

Polymer optical fibers (POFs) doped with organic dyes can be used to make efficient lasers and amplifiers due to the high gains achievable in short distances. This paper analyzes the peculiarities of light amplification in POFs through some experimental data and a computational model capable of carrying out both power and spectral analyses. We investigate the emission spectral shifts and widths and on the optimum signal wavelength and pump power as functions of the fiber length, the fiber numerical aperture and the radial distribution of the dopant. Analyses for both step-index and graded-index POFs have been done.

Incorporating the shielded method and post-processing method, a 75 mW single frequency Yb-doped DFB fiber laser was obtained with a 250 mW laser diode pump source at 978 nm. The threshold of the laser is 2 mW. The laser is single-polarization operation and the output power fluctuation is less than 0.2 mW in one hour when the pump power is 250 mW.

A series-parallel model is introduced to calculate the effective thermal conductivities of hollow claddings of photonic crystal fibers ( PCFs ). The temperature distribution and thermal-optical properties of PCF lasers are studied by solving the heat transfer equations. The average power scaling of the PCF lasers in respect of the thermal effects is also discussed. (c) 2006 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers.

Phase locking of two fiber lasers is demonstrated experimentally by the use of a self-imaging resonator with a spatial filter. The high-contrast interference strips of the coherent beam profile are observed. The coherent output power of the fiber array exceeds 12W and the efficiency of coherent power combination is 88% with pump power of 60W. The whole system operates quite stably and, for the spatial filter, no thermal effects have been observed, which means that we can increase the coherent output power further by this method. We demonstrate passive Q-switching of short-length double-clad Tm3+-doped silica fiber lasers near 2 mu m pumped by a laser diode array (LDA) at 790 nm. Polycrystalline Cr2+:ZnSe microchips with thickness from 0.3 to 1 mm are adopted as the Q-switching elements. Pulse duration of 120 ns, pulse energy over 14 mu] and repetition rate of 53 kHz are obtained from a 5-cm long fiber laser. As high as 530 kHz repetition rate is achieved from a 50-cm long fiber laser at similar to 10-W pump power. The performance of the Q-switched fiber lasers as a function of fiber length is also analyzed. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
