An effective and facile in Situ reduction approach for the fabrication of carbon nanotube-supported Au nanoparticle (CNT/Au NP) composite nanomaterials is demonstrated in this article. Linear polyethyleneimine (PEI) is ingeniously used as both a functionalizing agent for the multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) and a reducing agent for the formation of An NPs. This method involves a simple mixing process followed by a mild heating process. This approach does not need the exhaustive surface oxidation process of CNTs. The coverage of Au NPs on CNTs is tunable by varying the experimental parameters, such as the initial molar ratio of PEI to HAuCl4, the relative concentration of PEI and HAUCl(4) to MWNTs, and the temperature and duration of the heat treatment. More importantly, even the heterogeneous CNT/Au composite nanowires are obtainable through this method. TEM, XPS, and XRD are all used to characterize the CNT/Au composite materials. In addition, the optical and electrocatalytic properties are investigated.

Prussian blue (PB) was modified onto surface of SiO2 nanoparticles and multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) by electrostatic assembled method. SiO2 nanoparticles and MWNTs firstly modified by polyelectrolyte exhibited positive charges and negative charged PB could be assembled onto them. UV-vs spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), field-emitted scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and electrochemical methods were used to characterize these composite nanomaterials. TEM and FE-SEM images showed that PB was easily assembled onto polyelectrolyte modified SiO2 nanoparticles and MWNTs. Moreover, PB on the surface of nanomaterials was stable and still kept its intrinsic electrochemical properties and high electrocatalytic activity towards hydrogen peroxide.

The hybrid structure of Fe2O3 nanoparticles/TiO2 nanofibers (NFs), combines the merits of large surface areas of TiO2 NFs and absorption in ultraviolet light–visible light range. This structure can be used for many applications such as photoelectrochemical water splitting and photo-catalysis. Here, a sol-flame method is used for depositing Fe2O3 on TiO2 NFs that were prepared by hydrothermal on Ti sheets. The obtained materials were characterized by XRD, SEM, UV/Vis diffuse reflectance, Raman, and XPS. The results revealed the formation of rutile and anatase crystalline phases together with Fe2O3. This process moves the absorption threshold of TiO2 NFs support into visible spectrum range and enhances the photocurrent in comparison to bare TiO2 NFs, although no hole scavenger was used. The impedance measurement at low and high frequencies revealed an increase in series resistance and a decrease in resistance of charge transfer with sol-flame treatment time. A mechanism for explaining the charge transfer in these TiO2 NFs decorated with Fe2O3 nanoparticles was proposed.

Piezoelectric composites comprising an active phase of ferroelectric ceramic and a polymer matrix have recently attracted numerous sensory applications. However, it remains a major challenge to further improve their electromechanical response for advanced applications such as precision control and monitoring systems. We hereby investigated the incorporation of graphene platelets (GnPs) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs), each with various weight fractions, into PZT (lead zirconate titanate)/epoxy composites to produce three-phase nanocomposites. The nanocomposite films show markedly improved piezoelectric coefficients and electromechanical responses (50%) besides an enhancement of ~200% in stiffness. Carbon nanomaterials strengthened the impact of electric field on the PZT particles by appropriately raising the electrical conductivity of epoxy. GnPs have been proved far more promising in improving the poling behavior and dynamic response than MWNTs. The superior dynamic sensitivity of GnP-reinforced composite may be caused by GnPs’ high load transfer efficiency arising from their two-dimensional geometry and good compatibility with the matrix. Reduced acoustic impedance mismatch resulted from the improved thermal conductance may also contribute to the higher sensitivity of GnP-reinforced composite. This research pointed out the potential of employing GnPs to develop highly sensitive piezoelectric composites for sensing applications.

In this work, the structural and gas sensing properties of an electropolymerized, polyaniline (PANI)/multiwall carbon nanotube (MWNT) composite based surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensor are reported. Thin films made of PANI nanofibers were deposited onto 36 lithium tantalate (LiTaO3) SAW transducers using electropolymerization and were subsequently dedoped. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed the compact growth of the composites which is much denser than that of PANI nanofibers. The PANI/MWNT composite based SAW sensor was then exposed to different concentrations of hydrogen (H2) gas at room temperature with a demonstrated electrical response.

Solution-phase photocatalytic reduction of graphene oxide to reduced graphene oxide (RGO) by titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles produces an RGO-TiO2 composite that possesses enhanced charge transport properties beyond those of pure TiO2 nanoparticle films. These composite films exhibit electron lifetimes up to four times longer than that of intrinsic TiO2 films due to RGO acting as a highly conducting intraparticle charge transport network within the film. The intrinsic UV-active charge generation (photocurrent) of pure TiO2 was enhanced by a factor of 10 by incorporating RGO; we attribute this to both the highly conductive nature of the RGO and to improved charge collection facilitated by the intimate contact between RGO and the TiO2, uniquely afforded by the solution-phase photocatalytic reduction method. Integrating RGO into nanoparticle films using this technique should improve the performance of photovoltaic devices that utilize nanoparticle films, such as dye-sensitized and quantum-dot-sensitized solar cells.

Plastic electronics is a rapidly expanding topic, much of which has been focused on organic semiconductors. However, it is also of interest to find viable ways to integrate nanomaterials, such as silicon nanowires (SiNWs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs), into this technology. Here, we present methods of fabrication of composite devices incorporating such nanostructured materials into an organic matrix. We investigate the formation of polymer/CNT composites, for which we use the semiconducting polymer poly(3,3‴-dialkyl-quaterthiophene) (PQT). We also report a method of fabricating polymer/SiNW TFTs, whereby sparse arrays of parallel oriented SiNWs are initially prepared on silicon dioxide substrates from forests of as-grown gold-catalysed SiNWs. Subsequent ink-jet printing of PQT on these arrays produces a polymer/SiNW composite film. We also present the electrical characterization of all composite devices. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. Noble metal composite nanoparticles, as attractive building blocks of advanced functional materials, have received enormous attentions due to their specific optical, electronic and catalytic properties that are distant from those of the corresponding monometal nanoparticles. Such materials have important applications in such areas as sensors, optical materials, catalysis and biology, and developed into an increasingly important research area in nanomaterials science. This article reviews the recent progress in the synthesis, properties, and applications of noble metal composite nanoparticles with core-shell, heterostructure, and alloy structure.

Improving the charge capacity, electrochemical reversibility and stability of anode materials are main challenges for the development of Ni-based rechargeable batteries and devices. The combination of cobalt, as additive, and electrode material nanostructuration revealed a very promising approach for this purpose. The new alpha-NiCo mixed hydroxide based electrodes exhibited high specific charge/discharge capacity (355-714 C g(-1)) and outstanding structural stability, withstanding up to 700 redox cycles without any significant phase transformation, as confirmed by cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance and X-ray diffractometry. In short, the nanostructured alpha-NiCo mixed hydroxide materials possess superior electrochemical properties and stability, being strong candidates for application in high performance batteries and devices. Polymers are typically electrically and thermally insulating materials. The electrical and thermal conductivities of polymers can be increased by the addition conductive fillers such as carbons. Once the polymer composites have been made electrically and thermally conductive, they can be used in applications where these conductivities are desired such as electromagnetic shielding and static dissipation. In this project, three carbon nanomaterials are added to polycarbonate to enhance the electrical and thermal conductivity of the resulting composite. Hyperion Catalysis FIBRILs carbon nanotubes were added to a maximum loading of 8 wt%. Ketjenblack EC-600 JD carbon black was added to a maximum loading of 10 wt%. XG Sciences xGnP™ graphene nanoplatelets were added to a maximum loading of 15 wt%. These three materials have drastically different morphologies and will have varying effects on the various properties of polycarbonate composites. It was determined that carbon nanotubes have the largest effect on electrical conductivity with an 8 wt% carbon nanotube in polycarbonate composite having an electrical conductivity of 0.128 S/cm (from a pure polycarbonate value of 10-17 S/cm). Carbon black has the next largest effect with an 8 wt% carbon black in polycarbonate composite having an electrical conductivity of 0.008 S/cm. Graphene nanoplatelets have the least effect with an 8 wt% graphene nanoplatelet in polycarbonate having an electrical conductivity of 2.53 x 10-8 S/cm. Graphene nanoplatelets show a significantly higher effect on increasing thermal conductivity than either carbon nanotubes or carbon black. Mechanically, all three materials have similar effects with graphene nanoplatelets being somewhat more effective at increasing the tensile modulus of the composite than the other fillers. Carbon black and graphene nanoplatelets show standard carbon-filler rheology where the addition of filler increases the viscosity of the resulting composite. Carbon nanotubes, on the other hand, show an unexpected rheology. As carbon nanotubes are added to polycarbonate the viscosity of the composite is reduced below that of the original polycarbonate. It was seen that the addition of carbon nanotubes offsets the increased viscosity from a second filler, such as carbon black or graphene nanoplatelets.

Different types of crystalline carbon nanomaterials were used to reinforce polyaniline for use in electromechanical bilayer bending actuators. The objective is to analyze how the different graphitic structures of the nanocarbons affect and improve the in situ polymerized polyaniline composites and their subsequent actuator behavior. The nanocarbons investigated were multiwalled carbon nanotubes, nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes, helical-ribbon carbon nanofibers and graphene oxide, each one presenting different shape and structural characteristics. Films of nanocarbon-PAni composite were tested in a liquid electrolyte cell system. Experimental design was used to select the type of nanocarbon filler and composite loadings, and yielded a good balance of electromechanical properties. Raman spectroscopy suggests good interaction between PAni and the nanocarbon fillers. Electron microscopy showed that graphene oxide dispersed the best, followed by multiwall carbon nanotubes, while nitrogen-doped nanotube composites showed dispersion problems and thus poor performance. Multiwall carbon nanotube composite actuators showed the best performance based on the combination of bending angle, bending velocity and maximum working cycles, while graphene oxide attained similarly good performance due to its best dispersion. This parallel testing of a broad set of nanocarbon fillers on PAni-composite actuators is unprecedented to the best of our knowledge and shows that the type and properties of the carbon nanomaterial are critical to the performance of electromechanical devices with other conditions remaining equal.

Energy storage technologies are crucial for efficient utilization of electricity. Supercapacitors and rechargeable batteries are of currently available energy storage systems. Transition metal oxides, hydroxides, and phosphates are the most intensely investigated electrode materials for supercapacitors and rechargeable batteries due to their high theoretical charge storage capacities resulted from reversible electrochemical reactions. Their insulating nature, however, causes sluggish electron transport kinetics within these electrode materials, hindering them from reaching the theoretical maximum. The conductivity of these transition metal based-electrode materials can be improved through three main approaches; nanostructuring, chemical substitution, and introducing carbon matrices. These approaches often lead to unique electrochemical properties when combined and balanced.

Ethanol-mediated solvothermal synthesis we developed is found to be highly effective for controlling size and morphology of transition metal-based electrode materials for both pseudocapacitors and batteries. The morphology and the degree of crystallinity of nickel hydroxide are systematically changed by adding various amounts glucose to the solvothermal synthesis. Nickel hydroxide produced in this manner exhibited increased pseudocapacitance, which is partially attributed to the increased surface area. Interestingly, this morphology effect on cobalt doped-nickel hydroxide is found to be more effective at low cobalt contents than at high cobalt contents in terms of improving the electrochemical performance.

Moreover, a thin layer of densely packed nickel oxide flakes on carbon paper substrate was successfully prepared via the glucose-assisted solvothermal synthesis, resulting in the improved electrode conductivity. When reduced graphene oxide was used for conductive coating on as-prepared nickel oxide electrode, the electrode conductivity was only slightly improved. This finding reveals that the influence of reduced graphene oxide coating, increasing the electrode conductivity, is not that obvious when the electrode is already highly conductive to begin with.

We were able to successfully control the interlayer spacing and reduce the particle size of layered titanium hydrogeno phosphate material using our ethanol-mediated solvothermal reaction. In layered structure, interlayer spacing is the key parameter for fast ion diffusion kinetics. The nanosized layered structure prepared via our method, however, exhibited high sodium-ion storage capacity regardless of the interlayer spacing, implying that interlayer space may not be the primary factor for sodium-ion diffusion in nanostructured materials, where many interstitials are available for sodium-ion diffusion.

Our ethanol-mediated solvothermal reaction was also effective for synthesis of NaTi2(PO4)3 nanoparticles with uniform size and morphology, well connected by a carbon nanotube network. This composite electrode exhibited high capacity, which is comparable to that in aqueous electrolyte, probably due to the uniform morphology and size where the preferable surface for sodium-ion diffusion is always available in all individual particles.

Fundamental understandings of the relationship between electrode microstructures and electrochemical properties discussed in this dissertation will be important to design high performance energy storage system applications.
