Temperature-dependent electrical resistance in quasi-one-dimensional Li(0.9)Mo(6)O(17) is described by two Luttinger liquid anomalous exponents alpha, each associated with a distinct one dimensional band. The band with alpha < 1 is argued to crossover to a higher dimension below the temperature T(M'), leading to superconductivity. Disorder and magnetic fields are shown to induce the Bose metal behavior in this bulk compound.

The effects of chromium or nickel oxide additions on the composition of Portland clinker were investigated by X-ray powder diffraction associated with pattern analysis by the Rietveld method. The co-processing of industrial waste in Portland cement plants is an alternative solution to the problem of final disposal of hazardous waste. Industrial waste containing chromium or nickel is hazardous and is difficult to dispose of. It was observed that in concentrations up to 1% in mass, the chromium or nickel oxide additions do not cause significant alterations in Portland clinker composition. We report on energy transfer studies in terbium (Tb(3+))-europium (Eu(3+)) doped TeO(2)-ZnO-Na(2)O-PbO glass containing silver nanostructures. The samples excitation was made using ultraviolet radiation at 355 nm. Luminescence spectra were recorded from approximate to 480 to approximate to 700 nm. Enhanced Eu(3+) luminescence at approximate to 590 nm (transition (5)D(0)-(7)F(1)) and approximate to 614 nm (transition (5)D(0)-(7)F(2)) are observed. The large luminescence enhancement was obtained due to the simultaneous contribution of the Tb(3+)-Eu(3+) energy transfer and the contribution of the intensified local field on the Eu(3+) ions located near silver nanostructures.

This work uses crystal plasticity finite element simulations to elucidate the role of elastoplastic anisotropy in instrumented indentation P-h(s) curve measurements in face-centered Cubic (fcc) crystals. It is shown that although the experimental fluctuations in the loading stage of the P-h(s) curves can be attributed to anisotropy, the variability in the unloading stage of the experiments Is much greater than that resulting from anisotropy alone. Moreover, it is found that the conventional procedure used to evaluate the contact variables ruling the unloading P-h(s) curve introduces all uncertainty that approximates to the more fundamental influence of anisotropy. In view of these results, a robust procedure is proposed that uses contact area measurements in addition to the P-h(s) curves to extract homogenized J(2)-Plasticity-equivalent mechanical properties from single crystals.

A frequency upconversion process in Pr(3+) doped TeO(2)-ZnO glasses containing silver nanoparticles is studied under excitation with a nanosecond laser operating at 590 nm, in resonance with the (3)H(4)-->(1)D(2) transition. The excited Pr(3+) ions exchange energy in the presence of the nanoparticles, originating efficient conversion from orange to blue. The enhancement in the intensity of the luminescence at similar to 482 nm, corresponding to the (3)P(0)-->(3)H(4) transition, is due to the influence of the large local field on the Pr(3+) ions, which are located near the metallic nanoparticles. The emission energy dependence of the photoluminescence (PL) decay rate at room temperature has been studied in Si nanoclusters (Si-ncl) embedded in Si oxide matrices obtained by thermal annealing of substoichiometric Si oxide layers Si(y)O(1-y), y=(0.36,0.39,0.42), at various annealing temperatures (T(a)) and gas atmospheres. Raman scattering measurements give evidence for the formation of amorphous Si-ncl at T(a)=900 degrees C and of crystalline Si-ncl for T(a)=1000 degrees C and 1100 degrees C. For T(a)=1100 degrees C, the energy dispersion of the PL decay rate does not depend on sample fabrication conditions and follows previously reported behavior. For lower T(a), the rate becomes dependent on fabrication conditions and less energy dispersive. The effects are attributed to exciton localization and decoherence leading to the suppression of quantum confinement and the enhancement of nonradiative recombination in disordered and amorphous Si-ncl. We have systematically studied the magnetic properties of ferrite nanoparticles with 3, 7, and 11 nm of diameter with very narrow grain size distributions. Samples were prepared by the thermal decomposition of Fe (acac)(3) in the presence of surfactants giving nanoparticles covered by oleic acid. High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) images and XRD diffraction patterns confirms that all samples are composed by crystalline nanoparticles with the spinel structure expected for the iron ferrite. ac and dc magnetization measurements, as well in-field Mossbauer spectroscopy, indicate that the magnetic properties of nanoparticles with 11 and 7 nm are close to those expected for a monodomain, presenting large M(S) (close to the magnetite bulk). Despite the crystalline structure observed in HRTEM images, the nanoparticles with 3 nm are composed by a magnetically ordered region (core) and a surface region that presents a different magnetic order and it contains about 66% of Fe atoms. The high saturation and irreversibility fields in the M(H) loops of the particles with 3 nm together with the misalignment at 120 kOe in the in-field Mossbauer spectrum of surface component indicate a high surface anisotropy for the surface atoms, which is not observed for the core. For T < 10 K, we observe an increase in the susceptibility and of the magnetization for former sample, indicating that surface moments tend to align with applied field increasing the magnetic core size. The influence of the solvent-evaporation rate on the formation of of. and P crystalline phases in solution-cast poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) films was systematically investigated. Films were crystallized from PVDF/N,N-dimethylformamide solutions with concentrations of 2.5, 5.0, 10, and 20 wt % at different temperatures. During crystallization, the solvent evaporation rate was monitored in situ by means of a semianalytic balance. With this system, it was possible to determine the evaporation rate for different concentrations and temperatures of the solution under specific ambient conditions (pressure, temperature, and humidity). Fourier-Transform InfraRed spectroscopy with Attenuated Total Reflectance revealed the P-phase content in the PVDF films and its dependence on previous evaporation rates. Based on the relation between the evaporation rate and the PVDF phase composition, a consistent explanation for the different amounts of P phase observed at the upper and lower sample surfaces is achieved. Furthermore, the role of the sample thickness has also been studied. The experimental results show that not only the temperature but also the evaporation rate have to be controlled to obtain the desired crystalline phases in solution-cast PVDF films. In each of the title compounds, R[Ph(Cl)C=(H)C]TeCl(2), R = nBu (1) and Ph (2), the primary geometry about the Te(IV) atom is a pseudo-trigonal-bipyramidal arrangement, with two Cl atoms in apical positions, and the lone pair of electrons and C atoms in the equatorial plane. As the Te(IV) is involved in two, an intra- and an inter-molecular, Te center dot center dot center dot Cl interactions the coordination geometry might be considered as a Psi-pentagonal bipyramid in each case. In addition, in (2) there is a hint of a Te center dot center dot center dot pi interaction (Te center dot center dot center dot C = 3.911(3) A). The key feature in the crystal structure of both compounds is the formation of supramolecular chains mediated by Te center dot center dot center dot Cl contacts. The purpose of this study was to develop a lyotropic liquid crystalline formulation using the emulsifier vitamin E TPGS and evaluate its behavior after incorporation of a flavonoid, quercetin. The physical (macro and microscopic), chemical (determination of quercetin content by the HPLC method) and functional (determination of quercetin antioxidant activity by DPPH center dot assay) stability of the lamellar liquid crystalline formulation containing flavonoid was evaluated when stored at 4+/-2 degrees C; 30+/-2 degrees C/70+/-5% RH (relative humidity) and 40+/-2 degrees C/70+/-5% RH during 12 months. The lamellar liquid crystalline structure of the formulation was maintained during the experiment, however chemical and functional stability results showed a great influence of the storage period in all conditions tested. A significant decrease in quercetin content (approximately 40%) was detected during the first month of storage and a similar significant loss in antioxidant activity was detected after 6 months. The remaining flavonoid content was unchanged during the final 6 months of the experimental period. The results suggest possible interactions between quercetin and the liquid crystalline formulation, which could inhibit or reduce the quercetin activity incorporated in the system. In conclusion, the present study demonstrated that incorporation of quercetin (1%) did not affect the liquid crystalline structure composed of vitamin E TPGS/IPM/PG-H2O (1:1) at 63.75/21.25/15 (w/w/w). Nevertheless, of the total quercetin incorporated in the system only 60% was free to act as an antioxidant.

Precursor systems of liquid crystalline phase were prepared using the surfactant PPG-5-Ceteth-20, isopropyl myristate, and water; gelatin microparticles containing propolis were then added into these systems. Homogeneity of dispersion, the in-system microparticle morphology, and sedimentation behavior of each formulation were evaluated. The rheological and mechanical properties (hardness, compressibility, and adhesiveness), the work of syringing, and the propolis release profile were also evaluated. All the formulations exhibited pseudoplastic flow and thixotropy, and they displayed storage modulus, loss modulus, dynamic viscosity, and loss tangent that depended on temperature, frequency, and composition. Mechanical properties varied significantly among the formulations being affected by changes in the composition and temperature. Raising the concentration of surfactant and adding propolis microparticles significantly decreased the work of syringing. The drug release was non-Fickian (anomalous) and there was no significant difference between the tested systems in the times required for 10%, 30%, and 50% release of the initial drug loading.

Emulsions containing vegetable oils and anisotropic phases have especially attractive properties in pharmaceutical technology. They are use as vehicle for different kind of drugs, especially those of topical application. Apart from that, many vegetable oil have pharmacological activity, increasing the necessity for the development of new delivery systems for them. We developed emulsions with vegetable oils at a fixed surfactant ratio and observed the formation of liquid crystalline phases. Nine vegetable oils: Andiroba, Apricot, Avocado, Brazil Nut, Buriti, Cupuassu, Marigold, Passion Fruit and Pequi and mineral oil were tested. Surfactant system was consisted by Steareth-2 and Ceteareth-5. Emulsions were prepared by the emulsion phase inversion (EPI) method, presenting high stability independent on the HLB value. Results indicate that this method could be employed to attain stable emulsions, even if the required HLB value is not known.

The goal of this work was to study the liquid crystalline structure of a nanodispersion delivery system intended to be used in photodynamic therapy after loading with photosensitizers (PSs) and additives such as preservatives and thickening polymers. Polarized light microscopy and light scattering were performed on a standard nanodispersion in order to determine the anisotropy of the liquid crystalline structure and the mean diameter of the nanoparticles, respectively. Small angle X-ray diffraction (SAXRD) was used to verify the influence of drug loading and additives on the liquid crystalline structure of the nanodispersions. The samples, before and after the addition of PSs and additives, were stable over 90 days, as verified by dynamic light scattering. SAXRD revealed that despite the alteration observed in some of the samples analyzed in the presence of photosensitizing drugs and additives, the hexagonal phase still remained in the crystalline phase.
