The quadrupole coupling constants (qcc) for39K and23Na ions in glycerol have been calculated from linewidths measured as a function of temperature (which in turn results in changes in solution viscosity). The qcc of39K in glycerol is found to be 1.7 MHz, and that of23Na is 1.6 MHz. The relaxation behavior of39K and23Na ions in glycerol shows magnetic field and temperature dependence consistent with the equations for transverse relaxation more commonly used to describe the reorientation of nuclei in a molecular framework with intramolecular field gradients. It is shown, however, that τc is not simply proportional to the ratio of viscosity/temperature (ηT). The 39K qcc in glycerol and the value of 1.3 MHz estimated for this nucleus in aqueous solution are much greater than values of 0.075 to 0.12 MHz calculated from T2 measurements of39K in freshly excised rat tissues. This indicates that, in biological samples, processes such as exchange of potassium between intracellular compartments or diffusion of ions through locally ordered regions play a significant role in determining the effective quadrupole coupling constant and correlation time governing39K relaxation. T1 and T2 measurements of rat muscle at two magnetic fields also indicate that a more complex correlation function may be required to describe the relaxation of39K in tissue. Similar results and conclusions are found for23Na.

A formulation has been developed using perturbation theory to evaluate the π-contribution to the nuclear spin coupling constants involving nuclei at least one of which is an unsaturated center. This fromulation accounts for the π-contribution in terms of the core polarization and one-center exchange at the π-center. The formulation developed together with the Dirac vector model and Penney-Dirac bond-order formalisms was employed to calculate the geminal (two-bond) proton coupling constants of carboxyl carbons in α-disubstituted acetic acids. The calculated coupling constants were found to have an orientational dependence. The results of the calculation are in good agreement with the experimental values.

From consideration of 'H-lH vicinal coupling constants and '"G'H long-range coupling constants in a series of amino acid derivatives, the precise values of uC component vicinal coupling constants have been calculated for the three minimum energy staggered rotamers for the C(or)H-C(P)H, side-chains of amino acids.

Theoretical calculations of the geminal carbonyl-13C- proton coupling constant, 2J(C′H), in α-amino acids have been carried out using Dirac Vector model and Penney-Dirac bond order formulations. The results indicate that the couplings are dependent on the backbone torsion angle psi (ψ) of the amino acid residues in peptides. The meagre available experimental data seem to support the theoretical findings.

The thesis is divided into two parts. Part I generalizes a self-consistent calculation of residue shifts from SU3 symmetry, originally performed by Dashen, Dothan, Frautschi, and Sharp, to include the effects of non-linear terms. Residue factorizability is used to transform an overdetermined set of equations into a variational problem, which is designed to take advantage of the redundancy of the mathematical system. The solution of this problem automatically satisfies the requirement of factorizability and comes close to satisfying all the original equations.
Part II investigates some consequences of direct channel Regge poles and treats the problem of relating Reggeized partial wave expansions made in different reaction channels. An analytic method is introduced which can be used to determine the crossed-channel discontinuity for a large class of direct-channel Regge representations, and this method is applied to some specific representations.
It is demonstrated that the multi-sheeted analytic structure of the Regge trajectory function can be used to resolve apparent difficulties arising from infinitely rising Regge trajectories. Also discussed are the implications of large collections of "daughter trajectories."
Two things are of particular interest: first, the threshold behavior in direct and crossed channels; second, the potentialities of Reggeized representations for us in self-consistent calculations. A new representation is introduced which surpasses previous formulations in these two areas, automatically satisfying direct-channel threshold constraints while being capable of reproducing a reasonable crossed channel discontinuity. A scalar model is investigated for low energies, and a relation is obtained between the mass of the lowest bound state and the slope of the Regge trajectory.

The NMR spin coupling parameters, (1)J(N,H) and (2)J(H,H), and the chemical shielding, sigma((15)N), of liquid ammonia are studied from a combined and sequential QM/MM methodology. Monte Carlo simulations are performed to generate statistically uncorrelated configurations that are submitted to density functional theory calculations. Two different Lennard-Jones potentials are used in the liquid simulations. Electronic polarization is included in these two potentials via an iterative procedure with and without geometry relaxation, and the influence on the calculated properties are analyzed. B3LYP/aug-cc-pVTZ-J calculations were used to compute the V(N,H) constants in the interval of -67.8 to -63.9 Hz, depending on the theoretical model used. These can be compared with the experimental results of -61.6 Hz. For the (2)J(H,H) coupling the theoretical results vary between -10.6 to -13.01 Hz. The indirect experimental result derived from partially deuterated liquid is -11.1 Hz. Inclusion of explicit hydrogen bonded molecules gives a small but important contribution. The vapor-to-liquid shifts are also considered. This shift is calculated to be negligible for (1)J(N,H) in agreement with experiment. This is rationalized as a cancellation of the geometry relaxation and pure solvent effects. For the chemical shielding, U(15 N) Calculations at the B3LYP/aug-pcS-3 show that the vapor-to-liquid chemical shift requires the explicit use of solvent molecules. Considering only one ammonia molecule in an electrostatic embedding gives a wrong sign for the chemical shift that is corrected only with the use of explicit additional molecules. The best result calculated for the vapor to liquid chemical shift Delta sigma((15)N) is -25.2 ppm, in good agreement with the experimental value of -22.6 ppm.

A rationalization of the known difference between the (3,4)J(C4H1) and (3,4)J(C1H4) couplings transmitted mainly through the 7-bridge in norbornanone is presented in terms of the effects of hyperconjugative interactions involving the carbonyl group. Theoretical and experimental studies Of (3,4)J(CH) couplings were carried out in 3-endo- and 3-exo-X-2-norbornanone derivatives (X = Cl, Br) and in exo- and endo-2-noborneol compounds. Hyperconjugative interactions were studied with the natural bond orbital (NBO) method. Hyperconjugative interactions involving the carbonyl pi*c(2) =o and sigma*c(2) =o antibonding orbitals produce a decrease of three-bond contribution to both (3,4) J(C4H1) and (3,4)J(C1H4) couplings. However, the latter antibonding orbital also undergoes a strong sigma c(3)-c(4) ->sigma*c(2) =o interaction, which defines an additional coupling pathway for (3,4)J(C4H1) but not for (3,4)J(C1H4). This pathway is similar to that known for homoallylic couplings, the only difference being the nature of the intermediate antibonding orbital; i.e. for (3,4)J(C4H1) it is of sigma*-type, while in homoallylic couplings it is of pi*-type. The possibility of setting constraints on the Couplings of a scalar (pseudoscalar) Higgs boson to the tau lepton and the b quark in the reactions e(+)e(-)-->v (v) over bar tau(+)tau(-) and e(+)e(-)-->v (v) over barb (b) over bar at a future linear electron-positron collider of total energy roots = 500 GeV is studied. The admixture of a new hypothetical pseudoscalar state of the Higgs boson in the Hf (f) over bar vertex is parametrized in the form (mf/v)(a+igamma(5)b). on the basis of an analysis of differential distributions for the processes under study, it is shown that data from the future linear collider TESLA will make it possible to constrain the parameters a and b as -0.32 less than or equal to Deltaa less than or equal to 0.24 and -0.73 less than or equal to b less than or equal to 0.73 in the case of the reaction e(+)e(-)-->v (v) over bar tau(+)tau(-) and as -0.026 less than or equal to Deltaa less than or equal to 0.027 and -0.23 less than or equal to b less than or equal to 0.23 in the case of the reaction e(+)e(-) --> v (v) over barb (b) over bar. It is emphasized that the contribution of the fusion Subprocess WW --> H in the channel involving an electron neutrino is of particular importance, since this contribution enhances the sensitivity of data to the parameters being analyzed. This work evaluates the efficiency of economic levels of theory for the prediction of (3)J(HH) spin-spin coupling constants, to be used when robust electronic structure methods are prohibitive. To that purpose, DFT methods like mPW1PW91. B3LYP and PBEPBE were used to obtain coupling constants for a test set whose coupling constants are well known. Satisfactory results were obtained in most of cases, with the mPW1PW91/6-31G(d,p)//B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) leading the set. In a second step. B3LYP was replaced by the semiempirical methods PM6 and RM1 in the geometry optimizations. Coupling constants calculated with these latter structures were at least as good as the ones obtained by pure DFT methods. This is a promising result, because some of the main objectives of computational chemistry - low computational cost and time, allied to high performance and precision - were attained together. Different types of spin–spin coupling constants (SSCCs) for several representative small molecules are evaluated and analyzed using a combination of 10 exchange functionals with 12 correlation functionals. For comparison, calculations performed using MCSCF, SOPPA, other common DFT methods, and also experimental data are considered. A detailed study of the percentage of Hartree–Fock exchange energy in SSCCs and in its four contributions is carried out. From the above analysis, a combined functional formed with local Slater (34%), Hartree–Fock exchange (66%), and P86 correlation functional (S66P86) is proposed in this paper. The accuracy of the values obtained with this hybrid functional (mean absolute deviation of 4.5 Hz) is similar to that of the SOPPA method (mean absolute deviation of 4.6 Hz).

Equations for the intramolecular surfaces of the 3JHH coupling constants in ethane, ethylene, and acetylene are formulated, and the corresponding coefficients are estimated from calculations at the DFT/B3LYP level. The chosen variables are changes in bond lengths, in the torsion angle φ between the coupled protons Ha and Hb, in bond angles, and in dihedral angles. The 3JHH surface of ethane is formulated as an extended Karplus equation with the coefficients of a truncated Fourier series on the torsion angle φ expanded as second-order Taylor series in the chosen variables taking into account the invariance of 3JHH under reflections and rotations of nuclear coordinates. Partial vibrational contributions from linear and square terms corresponding to changes in the geometry of the Ha − Ca − Cb − Hb fragment are important while those from cross terms are small with a few exceptions. The 3JHH surface of ethane is useful to predict contributions to 3JHH from changes in local geometry of derivatives but vibrational contributions are predicted less satisfactorily. The predicted values at the B3LYP/BS2 level of the 3JHH couplings (vibrational contributions at 300 K) from equilibrium geometries are 9.79 (−0.17) for acetylene, and 17.08 (1.93) and 10.73(0.93) for the trans and cis couplings of ethylene.

Part I
Several approximate Hartree-Fock SCF wavefunctions for the ground electronic state of the water molecule have been obtained using an increasing number of multicenter s, p, and d Slater-type atomic orbitals as basis sets. The predicted charge distribution has been extensively tested at each stage by calculating the electric dipole moment, molecular quadrupole moment, diamagnetic shielding, Hellmann-Feynman forces, and electric field gradients at both the hydrogen and the oxygen nuclei. It was found that a carefully optimized minimal basis set suffices to describe the electronic charge distribution adequately except in the vicinity of the oxygen nucleus. Our calculations indicate, for example, that the correct prediction of the field gradient at this nucleus requires a more flexible linear combination of p-orbitals centered on this nucleus than that in the minimal basis set. Theoretical values for the molecular octopole moment components are also reported.
Part II
The perturbation-variational theory of R. M. Pitzer for nuclear spin-spin coupling constants is applied to the HD molecule. The zero-order molecular orbital is described in terms of a single 1s Slater-type basis function centered on each nucleus. The first-order molecular orbital is expressed in terms of these two functions plus one singular basis function each of the types e-r/r and e-r ln r centered on one of the nuclei. The new kinds of molecular integrals were evaluated to high accuracy using numerical and analytical means. The value of the HD spin-spin coupling constant calculated with this near-minimal set of basis functions is JHD = +96.6 cps. This represents an improvement over the previous calculated value of +120 cps obtained without using the logarithmic basis function but is still considerably off in magnitude compared with the experimental measurement of JHD = +43 0 ± 0.5 cps.
