The activity of a 5-wt% Cu/CeO2-x catalyst during preferential CO oxidation in hydrogen-rich gas mixtures was studied in a microchannel reactor. The CO concentration dropped from 1 vol.% to 10 ppm at a selectivity of 60%, at a temperature of 190 degrees C, and a weight hour space velocity (WHSV) of 55,000 cm(3) g(-1) h(-1). Both the CO concentration and the temperature increased when the WHSV was increased from 50,000 to 500,000 cm(3) g(-1) h(-1). An increase of the O-2 concentration from a 1.2 to 3 fold excess reduced the CO concentration to 10 ppm in a broad temperature interval of 50 degrees C at WHSVs up to 275,000 cm(3) g(-1) h(-1). The preferential CO oxidation could be carried out at higher flow rates and at higher selectivities in the microchannel reactor compared to a fixed-bed flow reactor. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. A structural study of CuO supported on a CeO2-TiO2 system was undertaken using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) techniques. The results of XRD revealed the presence of only two phases, TiO2 anatase and CeO2 cerianite. A trend towards smaller TiO2 crystallites was observed when cerium content increased. When the amount of cerium increased, Ti K-edge XANES analysis showed an increasing distortion of Ti sites. The results of Ce LIII-edge EXAFS showed that Ce atoms are coordinated by eight oxygen atoms at 2.32 Å. For the sample containing a small amount of cerium, the EXAFS analysis indicated that the local structure around Ce atoms was highly distorted. The catalysts presented quite different Cu K-edge XANES spectra compared to the spectra of the CuO and Cu2O reference compounds. The Cu-O mean bond length was close to that of the CuO and the Cu atoms in the catalysts are surrounded by approximately four oxygen atoms in their first shell. Copper supported on the ceria-modified titania support catalysts displayed a better performance in the methanol dehydrogenation when compared to copper supported only on titania or on ceria. © 2002 Plenum Publishing Corporation.

The synthesis of different tetrahydroisoquinolines using choline chloride : ethylene glycol as a deep eutectic solvent (DES) and copper(II) oxide impregnated on magnetite as a catalyst has been accomplished successfully. The copper catalyst amount is the lowest loading ever reported. The presence of DES showed to be essential since the reaction in the absence of this medium did not proceed. A direct proportional relationship was found between the conductivity of DES medium and the yield obtained. The DES and the catalyst could be reused up to ten times without any detrimental effect on the yield of the reaction, with the aerobic conditions making the protocol highly sustainable, where the only waste is water.

Superconducting YBa2Cu3O7 thin films with various thicknesses from 100 Å to 5000 Å were deposited on (100) SrTiO3 substrates with std. BaF2 coevaporation process. The films had crit. temps. of up to 93 K. The best crit. currents were 1 × 106 A/cm2 at 77 K and 3 × 107 A/cm2 at 4.2 K. The crit. current was generally higher for thinner films. Two different etching methods were used to pattern the films for jc measurements: Ar ion etching and EDTA wet etching. The wet etching was found to work well for thicker films (>1000 Å). For the thinner films, the ion etching process was preferred because of the reduced film surface degrdn. [on SciFinder(R)]

The oxides of copper (CuxO) are fascinating materials due to their remarkable optical, electrical, thermal and magnetic properties. Nanostructuring of CuxO can further enhance the performance of this important functional material and provide it with unique properties that do not exist in its bulk form. Three distinctly different phases of CuxO, mainly CuO, Cu2O and Cu4O3, can be prepared by numerous synthesis techniques including, vapour deposition and liquid phase chemical methods. In this article, we present a review of nanostructured CuxO focusing on their material properties, methods of synthesis and an overview of various applications that have been associated with nanostructured CuxO.

The uniform growth of copper oxide nanowires on the top of copper plate has been investigated during the exposure to radiofrequency plasma discharge in respect to plasma properties and its localization. The copper samples of 10 mm radius and 1 mm in thickness were exposed to argon-oxygen plasma created at discharge power of 150 W. After 10 min, almost uniform growth of nanowires was achieved over large surface. There were significant distortions in nanowire length and shape near the edges. Based on the experimental results, we developed a theoretical model, which took into account a balance in heat released at the flow of the current to the nanowire and rejected from the nanowire. This model established a dependence of the maximal length of the nanowire at dependence on the plasma parameters, where the limiting factor for nanowire growth and distortions in distribution are ballistic effects of ions and their local fluxes. In contrast, the plasma heating by potential interactions of species has very little influence on the length and smaller deviations in flux are allowed for uniformity of growth

This paper presents the results of an investigation conducted on the switching behavior of copper oxide. The filamentary nature of the current and also the formation of a copper channel have been observed to be associated with the process of switching. The experiments and the analysis carried out by the authors show that the formation of copper channel is due only to a secondary process and is not responsible for the actual switching of the device to the low-voltage mode. The switching, as is clear from the analysis, seems to be the result of a purely electrothermal process. The effect of the dimensions of the device on the V-I characteristics is also discussed. It has further been shown that it is possible to prevent the formation of copper channel to obtain a monoshot type of switching transition.

The superior catalytic activity along with improved CO tolerance for formic acid electro-oxidation has been demonstrated on a NiO-decorated reduced graphene oxide (rGO) catalyst. The cyclic voltammetry response of rGO-NiO/Pt catalyst elucidates improved CO tolerance and follows direct oxidation pathway. It is probably due to the beneficial effect of residual oxygen groups on rGO support which is supported by FT-IR spectrum. A strong interaction of rGO support with NiO nanoparticles facilitates the removal of CO from the catalyst surface. The chronoamperometric response indicates a higher catalytic activity and stability of rGO-NiO/Pt catalyst than the NiO/Pt and unmodified Pt electrode catalyst for a prolonged time of continuous oxidation of formic acid. Silver nanoparticles-anchored reduced graphene oxide (Ag-RGO) is prepared by simultaneous reduction of graphene oxide and Ag+ ions in an aqueous medium by ethylene glycol as the reducing agent. Ag particles of average size of 4.7 nm were uniformly distributed on the RGO sheets. Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is studied on Ag-RGO catalyst in both aqueous and non-aqueous electrolytes by using cyclic voltammetry and rotating disk electrode techniques. As the interest in non-aqueous electrolyte is to study the catalytic performance of Ag-RGO for rechargeable Li-O-2 cells, these cells are assembled and characterized. Li-O-2 cells with Ag-RGO as the oxygen electrode catalyst are subjected to charge-discharge cycling at several current densities. A discharge capacity of 11 950 mA h g(-1) (11.29 mA h cm(-2)) is obtained initially at low current density. Although there is a decrease in the capacity on repeated discharge-charge cycling initially, a stable capacity is observed for about 30 cycles. The results indicate that Ag-RGO is a suitable catalyst for rechargeable Li-O-2 cells.

Copper oxide (CuO) is one of the most important transition metal oxides due to its unique properties. It is used in various technological applications such as high critical temperature, superconductors, gas sensors, in photoconductive applications and so on. Recently, it has been used as an antimicrobial agent against various pathogenic bacteria. In the present investigation, we studied the structural and antidermatophytic properties of CuO nanoparticles (NPs) synthesized by a precipitation technique. Copper sulfate was used as a precursor and sodium hydroxide as a reducing agent. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed flower-shaped CuO NPs and X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern showed the crystalline nature of CuO NPs. These NPs were evaluated against two prevalent species of dermatophytes, i.e. Trichophyton rubrum and T. mentagrophytes by using the broth microdilution technique. Further, the NPs activity was also compared with synthetic sertaconazole. Although better antidermatophytic activity was exhibited with sertaconazole as compared to NPs, being synthetic, sertaconazole may not be preferred, as it shows different adverse effects. Trichophyton mentagrophytes is more susceptible to NPs than T. rubrum. A phylogenetic approach was applied for predicting differences in susceptibility of pathogens.
