In this paper, we report the preparation and characterisation of nanometer-sized TiO2, CdO, and ZnO semiconductor particles trapped in zeolite NaY. Preparation of these particles was carried out via the traditional ion exchange method and subsequent calcination procedure. It was found that the smaller cations, i.e., Cd2+ and Zn2+ could be readily introduced into the SI′ and SII′ sites located in the sodalite cages, through ion exchange; while this is not the case for the larger Ti species, i.e., Ti monomer [TiO]2+ or dimer [Ti2O3]2+ which were predominantly dispersed on the external surface of zeolite NaY. The subsequent calcination procedure promoted these Ti species to migrate into the internal surface of the supercages. These semiconductor particles confined in NaY zeolite host exhibited a significant blue shift in the UV-VIS absorption spectra, in contrast to the respective bulk semiconductor materials, due to the quantum size effect (QSE). The particle sizes calculated from the UV-VIS optical absorption spectra using the effective mass approximation model are in good agreement with the atomic absorption data.

Plasma-assisted synthesis of nanostructures is one of the most precise and effective approaches used in nanodevice fabrication. Here we report on the innovative approach of synthesizing nanostructured cadmium oxide films on Cd substrates using a reactive oxygen plasma-based process. Under certain conditions, the surface morphology features arrays of crystalline CdO nano/micropyramids. These nanostructures grow via unconventional plasma-assisted oxidation of a cadmium foil exposed to inductively coupled plasmas with a narrow range of process parameters. The growth of the CdO pyramidal nanostructures takes place in the solid-liquid-solid phase, with the rates determined by the interaction of plasma-produced oxygen atoms and ions with the surface. It is shown that the size of the pyramidal structures can be effectively controlled by the fluxes of oxygen atoms and ions impinging on the cadmium surface. The unique role of the reactive plasma environment in the controlled synthesis of CdO nanopyramidal structures is discussed as well.

A combination of laser plasma ablation and strain control in CdO/ZnO heterostructures is used to produce and stabilize a metastable wurtzite CdO nanophase. According to the Raman selection rules, this nanophase is Raman-active whereas the thermodynamically preferred rocksalt phase is inactive. The wurtzite-specific and thickness/strain-dependent Raman fingerprints and phonon modes are identified and can be used for reliable and inexpensive nanophase detection. The wurtzite nanophase formation is also confirmed by x-ray diffractometry. The demonstrated ability of the metastable phase and phonon mode control in CdO/ZnO heterostructures is promising for the development of next-generation light emitting sources and exciton-based laser diodes.

The deposition of CdO center dot nH(2)O On CdTe nanoparticles was studied in an aqueous phase. The CdTe nanocrystals (NCs) were prepared in aqueous solution through the reaction between Cd2+ and NaHTe in the presence of thioglycolic acid as a stabilizer. The molar ratio of the Cd2+ to Te2- in the precursory solution played an important role in the photoluminescence of the ultimate CdTe NCs. The strongest photoluminescence was obtained under 4.0 of [Cd2+]/[Te2-] at pH similar to 8.2. With the optimum dosage of Cd(II) hydrous oxide deposited on the CdTe NCs, the photoluminescence was enhanced greatly. The photoluminescence of these nanocomposites was kept constant in the pH range of 8.0-10.0, but dramatically decreased with an obvious blue-shifted peak while the pH was below 8.0. In addition, the photochemical oxidation of CdTe NCs with cadmium hydrous oxide deposition was markedly inhibited.

La crisis financiera hipotecaria de 2008 en la que se declaró en quiebra el banco de inversión Lehman Brothers, se desarrolló en un ambiente que contemplaba apalancamientos financieros excesivos y el uso de derivados financieros de crédito innovadores. Razón por la cual, a partir del estudio de caso de quiebra de este banco de inversión y el análisis de las causas y consecuencias del ambiente desregulatorio que surgió en Estados Unidos desde la década de los 30 hasta el 2000, se orienta la investigación a indagar sobre lo que sucede en términos regulatorios y empresariales en el mercado de valores colombiano y así lograr definir objetivos que permitan el crecimiento del mercado de derivados exóticos en Colombia bajo un marco de responsabilidad financiera y ética empresarial.

L’esplosione della crisi nel 2007 ha contribuito alla diffusione di numerosi termini e concetti afferenti al dominio nella finanza strutturata non solo nelle pagine dei quotidiani specializzati, ma anche di quelli generalisti, producendo uno straniante «sentimento neologico» che ha accresciuto il senso di inaccessibilità e soggezione che in molti nutrono nei riguardi delle “cose della finanza” e delle notizie economiche, percepite come ostiche e incomprensibili. Questo lavoro mira a dimostrare che le cause di questo imperante senso di smarrimento di fronte all’informazione economica sono da addurre a più fattori: alla comune scarsa dimestichezza con il linguaggio e le “cose della finanza” dei cittadini; alla complessità dei concetti che i termini in questione veicolano e alla maniera in cui essi vengono presentati dalla vulgata giornalistica. Questa tesi si articola in quattro capitoli: nel primo si discute del tirocinio svolto presso la DGT della Commissione Europea, che ha fornito degli utili spunti per la stesura del presente lavoro; nel secondo si evidenzia l’importanza di una corretta educazione finanziaria per la formazione di una cittadinanza consapevole, in grado alimentare un sistema finanziario sano. Nel terzo capitolo si discute di finanza strutturata, volgendo particolare attenzione al CDO, di cui anche la Consob ha sottolineato l’intrinseca complessità e che ha assunto un ruolo da protagonista nell’esplosione della crisi dei mutui subprime. Nel quarto capitolo si delinea un breve quadro dell’informazione finanziaria in Italia e in Germania; mediante l’analisi di due corpora comparabili e diacronici si mira, infine, a osservare in che modo i giornali, nel corso degli anni, hanno veicolato il concetto che sottende al termine CDO rintracciando, contestualmente, similarità e differenze tra la stampa generalista e quella specializzata e tra i quotidiani tedeschi e quelli italiani.

The early axon scaffolding in the embryonic vertebrate brain consists of a series of ventrally projecting axon tracts that grow into a single major longitudinal pathway connected across the midline by commissures. We have investigated the role of Brother of CDO (BOC), an immunoglobulin (Ig) superfamily member distantly related to the Roundabout (Robo) family of axon-guidance receptors, in the development of this embryonic template of axon tracts in the zebrafish brain. A zebrafish homologue of BOC was isolated and shown to be expressed predominantly in the developing neural plate and later in the neural tube and developing brain. Zebrafish boc was initially highly localized to discrete bands in the mid- and hindbrain, but, as the major brain subdivisions emerged, it became more evenly expressed along the rostrocaudal axis, particularly in dorsal regions. The function of zebrafish boc was examined by a loss-of-function approach. Analysis of embryos injected with antisense morpholinos designed against boc revealed highly selective defects in the development of dorsoventrally projecting axon tracts. Loss of boc caused ventrally projecting axons, particularly those arising from the presumptive telencephalon, to follow aberrant trajectories. These data indicate that boc is an axon-guidance molecule playing a fundamental role in pathfinding during the early patterning of the axon scaffold in the embryonic vertebrate brain. Highly sensitive and selective detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) with fast response time is imperative based on safety requirements, yet often remains a challenge. Herein, we propose an effective solution, preparing a novel gas sensor comprised of amorphous nanoflake arrays (a-NFAs) with specific surface groups. The sensor was produced via an extremely simple process in which a-NFAs of CdO were deposited directly onto an interdigital electrode immersed in a chemical bath under ambient conditions. Upon exposure to a widely used VOC, diethyl ether (DEE), the sensor exhibits excellent performance, more specifically, the quickest response, lowest detection limit and highest selectivity ever reported for DEE as a target gas. The superior gas-sensing properties of the prepared a-NFAs are found to arise from their open trumpet-shaped morphology, defect-rich amorphous nature, and surface CO groups.

A dolgozat első részében röviden áttekintjük a 2007-ben kezdődött pénzügyi válság lefolyását és a válsághoz vezető okokat. A bemutatás során igyekszünk végig a mögöttes folyamatokra és azok mozgatórugóira koncentrálni, ezzel megragadva a válság egyfajta "elméletét". A bemutatásból láthatóvá válik a hitelderivatívák kiemelt szerepe a válság során. A dolgozat második részében az egyik legnépszerűbb hitelderivatív termék, a szintetikus fedezett adósságkötelezettségek (CDO-k) matematikai modellezését és annak problémáit mutatjuk be. Sokak szerint ezek a matematikai modellek okozták - vagy legalábbis felerősítették - a válságot. Az elemzés során megmutatjuk, hogy nemcsak a modellezési eszközök nem voltak megfelelők, hanem az árazás elve sem állta meg a helyét a kockázatsemleges árazási keretben. Ez az eredmény élesen rámutat a mögöttes elméletek válságára. / === / The first part of the paper examines briefly the financial crisis of 2007 and its causes, focusing on its driving processes and key motifs. This shows clearly the importance and centrality of credit derivatives in the crisis. The second part presents a mathematical modelling of one of the most popular credit derivative products: synthetic collateralized debt obligations, along with the drawbacks and problems of the modelling process. It is widely claimed that these products caused or at least precipitated the crises. The authors show not only that the modelling tools were inappropriate, but that the principle for pricing did not match adequately the risk-neutral valuation framework.

Surface oxidation of Cd, In, Sn and Sb has been investigated by employing valence bands, metal 4d levels and plasmon bands in X-ray photoelectron spectra. O(KLL), metal M4N45N45, and plasmon transitions in electron-induced Auger spectra as well as Auger transitions due to the metal (metal oxide) and plasmons in X-ray-induced Auger spectra. The surface oxides are In2O4, CdO and a mixture of SnO and SnO2 in the case of In. Cd and Sn respectively. The facility of surface oxidation is found to vary as In>Cd>Sn>Sb. Inter-atomic Auger transitions involving oxygen valence bands have been identified on oxidized surfaces of Cd and In.

In the present work we report a rapid microwave irradiation-assisted chemical synthesis technique for the growth of nanoparticles, nanorods, and nanotubes of a variety of metal oxides in the presence of an appropriate surfactant (cationic, anionic, non ionic and polymeric), without the use of any templates. The method is simple, inexpensive, and helps one to prepare nanostructures in quick time, measured in seconds and minutes. This method has been applied successfully to synthesize nanostructures of a variety of binary and ternary metal oxides such as ZnO, CdO, Fe2O3, CuO, Ga2O3, Gd2O3, ZnFe2O4, etc. There is an observed variation in the morphology of the nanostructures with changes in different process parameters, such as microwave power, irradiation time, identity of solvent, type of surfactant, and its concentration.
