We reformulate and extend our recently introduced quantum kinetic theory for interacting fermion and scalar fields. Our formalism is based on the coherent quasiparticle approximation (cQPA) where nonlocal coherence information is encoded in new spectral solutions at off-shell momenta. We derive explicit forms for the cQPA propagators in the homogeneous background and show that the collision integrals involving the new coherence propagators need to be resummed to all orders in gradient expansion. We perform this resummation and derive generalized momentum space Feynman rules including coherent propagators and modified vertex rules for a Yukawa interaction. As a result we are able to set up self-consistent quantum Boltzmann equations for both fermion and scalar fields. We present several examples of diagrammatic calculations and numerical applications including a simple toy model for coherent baryogenesis.

We formulate a lattice Boltzmann model which simulates Korteweg-de Vries equation by using a method of higher moments of lattice Boltzmann equation. Using a series of lattice Boltzmann equations in different time scales and the conservation law in time scale to, we obtain equilibrium distribution function. The numerical examples show that the method can be used to simulate soliton.

We calculate the relic abundance of mixed axion/neutralino cold dark matter which arises in R-parity conserving supersymmetric (SUSY) models wherein the strong CP problem is solved by the Peccei-Quinn (PQ) mechanism with a concommitant axion/saxion/axino supermultiplet. By numerically solving the coupled Boltzmann equations, we include the combined effects of 1. thermal axino production with cascade decays to a neutralino LSP, 2. thermal saxion production and production via coherent oscillations along with cascade decays and entropy injection, 3. thermal neutralino production and re-annihilation after both axino and saxion decays, 4. gravitino production and decay and 5. axion production both thermally and via oscillations. For SUSY models with too high a standard neutralino thermal abundance, we find the combined effect of SUSY PQ particles is not enough to lower the neutralino abundance down to its measured value, while at the same time respecting bounds on late-decaying neutral particles from BBN. However, models with a standard neutralino underabundance can now be allowed with either neutralino or axion domination of dark matter, and furthermore, these models can allow the PQ breaking scale f(a) to be pushed up into the 10(14) - 10(15) GeV range, which is where it is typically expected to be in string theory models.

A complex low-pressure argon discharge plasma containing dust grains is studied using a Boltzmann equation for the electrons and fluid equations for the ions. Local effects, such as the spatial distribution of the dust density and external electric field, are included, and their effect on the electron energy distribution, the electron and ion number densities, the electron temperature, and the dust charge are investigated. It is found that dust particles can strongly affect the plasma parameters by modifying the electron energy distribution, the electron temperature, the creation and loss of plasma particles, as well as the spatial distributions of the electrons and ions. In particular, for sufficiently high grain density and/or size, in a low-pressure argon glow discharge, the Druyvesteyn-like electron distribution in pristine plasmas can become nearly Maxwellian. Electron collection by the dust grains is the main cause for the change in the electron distribution function.

One of the unanswered questions of modern cosmology is the issue of baryogenesis. Why does the universe contain a huge amount of baryons but no antibaryons? What kind of a mechanism can produce this kind of an asymmetry? One theory to explain this problem is leptogenesis. In the theory right-handed neutrinos with heavy Majorana masses are added to the standard model. This addition introduces explicit lepton number violation to the theory. Instead of producing the baryon asymmetry directly, these heavy neutrinos decay in the early universe. If these decays are CP-violating, then they produce lepton number. This lepton number is then partially converted to baryon number by the electroweak sphaleron process. In this work we start by reviewing the current observational data on the amount of baryons in the universe. We also introduce Sakharov's conditions, which are the necessary criteria for any theory of baryogenesis. We review the current data on neutrino oscillation, and explain why this requires the existence of neutrino mass. We introduce the different kinds of mass terms which can be added for neutrinos, and explain how the see-saw mechanism naturally explains the observed mass scales for neutrinos motivating the addition of the Majorana mass term. After introducing leptogenesis qualitatively, we derive the Boltzmann equations governing leptogenesis, and give analytical approximations for them. Finally we review the numerical solutions for these equations, demonstrating the capability of leptogenesis to explain the observed baryon asymmetry. In the appendix simple Feynman rules are given for theories with interactions between both Dirac- and Majorana-fermions and these are applied at the tree level to calculate the parameters relevant for the theory.

A phase relaxation model (PRM) for 2-phase flows is presented in this paper on the basis of three principal assumptions. The basic equations for PRM arc derived from the Boltzmann equations for gas-partlcle mixture, The general characteristics and solving process of the PRM's basic equations are also presented and discussed. Many terms in the PRM's basic equations contain a factor ε= ρgρp/ρg+ρp2 which is an intrinsic small parameter for 2-phase mixture, with ρg and ρp being respectively the densities of gas and particle phases. This makes it possible to simplify the computation of the PRM's basic equations. The model is applied to for example, studying file steady propagation of shock waves in gas-particle mixture. The analysis shows that with an increase of shock wave strength the relaxation process behind a gasdynamics shock front becomes a kind of dynamics relaxation instead of the standard exponential relaxation process. A method of determining experimentally the velocity and tem...更多perature relaxation rates (or times) of gas-particle flows is suggested and analyzed.

The problem of the concentration jump of a vapour in the vicinity of a plane wall, which consists of the condensed phase of the vapour, in a rarefied gas mixture of that vapour (A) and another 'inert' gas (B), is considered. The general formulation of the problem of determining the concentration-jump coefficient for dA is given. In the Knudsen layer the simplest model of Boley-Yip theory is used to simplify the Boltzmann equations for the binary gas mixture. The numerical calculation of the concentration jump coefficient for dA for various values of evaporation coefficient of A is illustrated for the case of the equilibrium concentration of B being much greater than that of A, for which experimental data are available.

Transport phenomena still stand as one of the most challenging problems in computational physics. By exploiting the analogies between Dirac and lattice Boltzmann equations, we develop a quantum simulator based on pseudospin-boson quantum systems, which is suitable for encoding fluid dynamics transport phenomena within a lattice kinetic formalism. It is shown that both the streaming and collision processes of lattice Boltzmann dynamics can be implemented with controlled quantum operations, using a heralded quantum protocol to encode non-unitary scattering processes. The proposed simulator is amenable to realization in controlled quantum platforms, such as ion-trap quantum computers or circuit quantum electrodynamics processors.

Interfacial concentrations of chloride and bromide ions, with Li+, Na+, K+, Rb+, Cs+, trimethylammonium (TMA(+)), Ca2+, and Mg2+ as counterions, were determined by chemical trapping in micelles formed by two zwitterionic surfactants, namely N-hexadecyl-N,N-dimethyl-3-ammonio-1-propanesulfonate (HPS) and hexadecylphosphorylcholine (HDPC) micelles. Appropriate standard curves for the chemical trapping method were obtained by measuring the product yields of chloride and bromide salts with 2,4,6-trimethyl-benzenediazonium (BF4) in the presence of low molecular analogs (N,N,N-trimethyl-propane sulfonate and methyl-phosphorylcholine) of the employed surfactants. The experimentally determined values for the local Br- (Cl-) concentrations were modeled by fully integrated non-linear Poisson Boltzmann equations. The best fits to all experimental data were obtained by considering that ions at the interface are not fixed at an adsorption site but are free to move in the interfacial plane. In addition, the calculation of ion distribution allowed the estimation of the degree of ion coverage by using standard chemical potential differences accounting for ion specificity. Highly doped polar semiconductors are essential components of today’s semiconductor industry. Most strikingly, transistors in modern electronic devices are polar semiconductor heterostructures. It is important to thoroughly understand carrier transport in such structures. In doped polar semiconductors, collective excitations of the carriers (plasmons) and the atoms (polar phonons) couple. These coupled collective excitations affect the electrical conductivity, here quantified through the carrier mobility. In scattering events, the carriers and the coupled collective modes transfer momentum between each other. Carrier momentum transferred to polar phonons can be lost to other phonons through anharmonic decay, resulting in a finite carrier mobility. The plasmons do not have a decay mechanism which transfers carrier momentum irretrievably. Hence, carrier-plasmon scattering results in infinite carrier mobility. Momentum relaxation due to either carrier–plasmon scattering or carrier–polar-phonon scattering alone are well understood. However, only this thesis manages to treat momentum relaxation due to both scattering mechanisms on an equal footing, enabling us to properly calculate the mobility limited by carrier–coupled plasmon–polar phonon scattering. We achieved this by solving the coupled Boltzmann equations for the carriers and the collective excitations, focusing on the “drag” term and on the anharmonic decay process of the collective modes. Our approach uses dielectric functions to describe both the carrier-collective mode scattering and the decay of the collective modes. We applied our method to bulk polar semiconductors and heterostructures where various polar dielectrics surround a semiconducting monolayer of MoS2, where taking plasmons into account can increase the mobility by up to a factor 15 for certain parameters. This screening effect is up to 85% higher than if calculated with previous methods. To conclude, our approach provides insight into the momentum relaxation mechanism for carrier–coupled collective mode scattering, and better tools for calculating the screened polar phonon and interface polar phonon limited mobility.

A Lagrangian lattice Boltzmann method for solving Euler equations is proposed. The key step in formulating this method is the introduction of the displacement distribution function. The equilibrium distribution function consists of macroscopic Lagrangian variables at time steps n and n + 1. It is different from the standard lattice Boltzmann method. In this method the element, instead of each particle, is required to satisfy the basic law. The element is considered as one large particle, which results in simpler version than the corresponding Eulerian one, because the advection term disappears here. Our numerical examples successfully reproduce the classical results.

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to apply lattice Boltzmann equation method (LBM) with multiple relaxation time (MRT) model, to investigate lid-driven flow in a three-dimensional (3D), rectangular cavity, and compare the results with flow in an equivalent two-dimensional (2D) cavity. Design/methodology/approach - The second-order MRT model is implemented in a 3D LBM code. The flow structure in cavities of different aspect ratios (0.25-4) and Reynolds numbers (0.01-1000) is investigated. The LBM simulation results are compared with those from numerical solution of Navier-Stokes (NS) equations and with available experimental data. Findings - The 3D simulations demonstrate that 2D models may predict the flow structure reasonably well at low Reynolds numbers, but significant differences with experimental data appear at high Reynolds numbers. Such discrepancy between 2D and 3D results are attributed to the effect of boundary layers near the side-walls in transverse direction (in 3D), due to which the vorticity in the core-region is weakened in general. Secondly, owing to the vortex stretching effect present in 3D flow, the vorticity in the transverse plane intensifies whereas that in the lateral plane decays, with increase in Reynolds number. However, on the symmetry-plane, the flow structure variation with respect to cavity aspect ratio is found to be qualitatively consistent with results of 2D simulations. Secondary flow vortices whose axis is in the direction of the lid-motion are observed; these are weak at low. Reynolds numbers, but become quite strong at high Reynolds numbers. Originality/value - The findings will be useful in the study of variety of enclosed fluid flows.

A new way of flux-splitting, termed as the wave-particle splitting is presented for developing upwind methods for solving Euler equations of gas dynamics. Based on this splitting, two new upwind methods termed as Acoustic Flux Vector Splitting (AFVS) and Acoustic Flux Difference Splitting (AFDS) methods are developed. A new Boltzmann scheme, which closely resembles the wave-particle splitting, is developed using the kinetic theory of gases. This method, termed as Peculiar Velocity based Upwind (PVU) method, uses the concept of peculiar velocity for upwinding. A special feature of all these methods that the unidirectional and multidirectional parts of the flux vector are treated separately. Extensive computations done using these schemes demonstrate the soundness of the ideas.

The classical Chapman-Enskog expansion is performed for the recently proposed finite-volume formulation of lattice Boltzmann equation (LBE) method D.V. Patil, K.N. Lakshmisha, Finite volume TVD formulation of lattice Boltzmann simulation on unstructured mesh, J. Comput. Phys. 228 (2009) 5262-5279]. First, a modified partial differential equation is derived from a numerical approximation of the discrete Boltzmann equation. Then, the multi-scale, small parameter expansion is followed to recover the continuity and the Navier-Stokes (NS) equations with additional error terms. The expression for apparent value of the kinematic viscosity is derived for finite-volume formulation under certain assumptions. The attenuation of a shear wave, Taylor-Green vortex flow and driven channel flow are studied to analyze the apparent viscosity relation.
