A comparison of biodegradable municipal waste (BMW) management strategies in Ireland and the Czech Republic and the lessons learned

In order to meet the recycling and recovery targets set forth by the European Union's (EU) Waste and Landfill Directives, both the Irish and Czech governments’ policy on waste management is changing to meet these pressures, with major emphasis being placed upon the management of biodegradable municipal waste (BMW). In particular, the EU Landfill Directive requires reductions in the rate of BMW going to landfill to 35% of 1995 values by 2016 and 2020 for Ireland and the Czech Republic, respectively. In this paper, the strategies of how Ireland and the Czech Republic plan to meet this challenge are compared. Ireland either landfills or exports its waste for recovery, while the Czech Republic has a relatively new waste management infrastructure. While Ireland met the first target of 75% diversion of BMW from landfill by 2010 and preliminary 2012 data indicate that Ireland is on track to meet the 2013 target, the achievement of the 2016 target remains at risk. Indicators that were developed to monitor the Czech Republic's path to meeting the targets demonstrate that it did not meet the first target that was set for 2010 and will probably not meet its 2013 target either. The evaluation reports on the implementation of Waste Management Plan of Czech Republic suggest that the currently applied strategy to divert biodegradable waste from landfill is not effective enough. For both countries, the EU Waste Framework and Landfill Directives will be a significant influence and driver of change in waste management practices and governance over the coming decade. This means that both countries will not only have to invest in infrastructure to achieve the targets, but will also have to increase awareness among the public in diverting this waste at the household level. Improving environmental education is part of increased awareness as it is imperative for citizens to understand the consequences of their actions as affluence continues to grow producing increased levels of waste.

Despite the differences in the levels of waste generation in both the Czech Republic and Ireland, each country can learn from each other in order to meet the recycling and recovery targets set by the European Union's (EU) Waste and Landfill Directives. Both countries will not only have to invest in infrastructure to achieve the targets, but will also have to increase awareness among the public in diverting this waste at the household level. In addition, there needs to be minimum safe standards when land-spreading organic agricultural and organic municipal and industrial materials on agricultural land used for food production, as well as incentives to increase BMW diversion from landfill such as the increased landfill levy implemented in Ireland and the acceptance of MBT and/or incineration as a means of treating residual waste.

Para uma interpretação na guitarra das sonatas BMW 1001/1003/1005 de Bach inspirada numa memorabília das práticas interpretativas

O presente trabalho procura compreender as abordagens interpretativas desenvolvidas na guitarra das sonatas para violino BWV 1001, 1003 e 1005 de Bach e apresenta uma proposta de interpretação inspirada no autógrafo original. Sistematiza características de transcrições e gravações das obras no instrumento, e considera as respectivas inferências interpretativas. Face ao significativo número de autores e intérpretes que, adaptando o texto de Bach, privilegiam a faceta harmónica da guitarra e desvalorizam o uso de recursos expressivos da prática interpretativa barroca implícitos e explícitos na notação, problematiza os desafios colocados a uma interpretação num instrumento harmónico que mantém o texto escrito para um outro predominantemente melódico, e faz da articulação o seu centro, facultando propostas de realização. O texto de Bach para violino, as práticas barrocas e o legado dos discursos interpretativos sobre as obras integram o repositório de memórias que inspiraram e fundamentaram a criação de uma interpretação. Nela se tomam opções estéticas e encontram as respectivas soluções de realização técnica na sequência da procura de novos caminhos interpretativos, através da recuperação de alguns aspectos que teriam tido expressão numa imaginária interpretação oitocentista – criando uma outra memória.

Análisis y propuesta de mejoramiento al sistema actual de evaluación del desempeño de la empresa Álvarez Barba S.A. – Quito, aplicando la metodología de modelamiento de perfiles por competencias enfocado al Área Comercial de vehículos BMW - Porsche

La evaluación de desempeño es un sistema que permite medir el rendimiento y productividad de los trabajadores de todas las áreas de negocio de una empresa; además que la información que se obtiene luego de la aplicación de este sistema es de gran importancia para comparar los niveles de cumplimiento individuales en relación con los objetivos generales de la Organización. Este subproceso del área de Recursos Humanos ayuda a potencializar el talento del capital humano, en especial el desarrollo de las competencias profesionales con las habilidades innatas de las personas. Este trabajo de investigación tiene como finalidad diagnosticar el sistema actual de evaluación y proponer un nuevo sistema de evaluación de desempeño basado en la metodología de competencias para poder determinar los factores que se deben fortalecer, como también desarrollar profesionalmente a los trabajadores que en este caso pertenecen al área comercial de vehículos BMW/PORSCHE. Esta metodología permite potencializar a los trabajadores otorgando una retroalimentación que comprende varios criterios como es el caso de la evaluación de 360º. La evaluación del desempeño a los empleados es un tema que se ha manejado de forma superficial que lo único que ha aportado es para desvincular o continuar en relación de dependencia con la empresa mas no con el desarrollo profesional de los mismos.

Ciaccona em ré menor BMW 1004 de J.S. Bach : um estudo das articulações e uma transcrição para violão

Este trabalho é uma análise das articulações indicadas por Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) na sua Ciaccona em ré menor - quinto movimento da Partita II para violino solo, BWV 1004 – e uma transcrição desta obra para violão. A questão da interpretação dos sinais de articulação assinalados por Bach é abordada a partir de referenciais teóricos e práticos. São discutidas as tradições de execução e os variados entendimentos atribuídos por estas aos sinais de articulação.

Re-examining the BMW-Rover affair:a case study of corporate, strategic and government failure?

This paper analyses corporate and government strategies during the purchase, period of control and divestment by BMW of the car manufacturer Rover over the period 1994 to 2000. This paper examines three types of ‘failure’. It views BMW’s purchase of Rover as a ‘corporate failure’, with British Aerospace keen to sell Rover to raise cash and with BMW not realising the real condition of Rover. It then moves on to examine BMW’s ‘divide and rule’ strategies with regard to working conditions and subsidy-seeking and its decision to sell Rover as an example of ‘strategic failure’. Finally, it considers the ‘hands-off’ nature of British policy towards such transnational firms, and BMW in particular, as an example of ‘government failure’. This paper concludes by raising the possibility of an EU-wide policy towards transnationals, especially in terms of monitoring the activities of such firms.
