Continuous monitoring of diesel engine performance is critical for early detection of fault developments in an engine before they materialize into a functional failure. Instantaneous crank angular speed (IAS) analysis is one of a few nonintrusive condition monitoring techniques that can be utilized for such a task. Furthermore, the technique is more suitable for mass industry deployments than other non-intrusive methods such as vibration and acoustic emission techniques due to the low instrumentation cost, smaller data size and robust signal clarity since IAS is not affected by the engine operation noise and noise from the surrounding environment. A combination of IAS and order analysis was employed in this experimental study and the major order component of the IAS spectrum was used for engine loading estimation and fault diagnosis of a four-stroke four-cylinder diesel engine. It was shown that IAS analysis can provide useful information about engine speed variation caused by changing piston momentum and crankshaft acceleration during the engine combustion process. It was also found that the major order component of the IAS spectra directly associated with the engine firing frequency (at twice the mean shaft rotating speed) can be utilized to estimate engine loading condition regardless of whether the engine is operating at healthy condition or with faults. The amplitude of this order component follows a distinctive exponential curve as the loading condition changes. A mathematical relationship was then established in the paper to estimate the engine power output based on the amplitude of this order component of the IAS spectrum. It was further illustrated that IAS technique can be employed for the detection of a simulated exhaust valve fault in this study.

The basic lectin from winged bean (Psophocarpus tetragonolobus) could be crystallized using polyethyleneglycol (PEG) 4000 (I), PEG 8000 (II) and 2-methylpentane-2,4-diol (MPD) (III) as precipitants. Crystal forms I and II grew in the presence of methyl-α-Image -galactopyranoside or N -acetylgalactosamine while III grew in the absence of sugar. The three forms have the same space group (P21212) and similar unit cell dimensions with two dimeric molecules in the asymmetric unit. The unit cell dimensions are a = 156·8 Å, b = 89·0 Å, c = 73·3 Å for I, a = 155·5 Å, b = 92·3 Å, c = 72·5 Å for II and a = 148·3 Å, b = 90·7 Å, c = 73·8 Å for III. The crystals, particularly those grown using PEG 8000, are suitable for high resolution X-ray analysis, which is in progress.

A ZnO layer was grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) on a sapphire (0 0 0 1) substrate. The perpendicular and parallel elastic strain of the ZnO epilayer, e(perpendicular to) = 0.19%, e(parallel to) = -0.29%, respectively, were derived by using the combination of Rutherford backscattering (RBS)/channeling and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The ratio vertical bar e(parallel to)/ e(perpendicular to)vertical bar = 1.5 indicates that ZnO layer is much stiffer in the a-axis direction than in the c-axis direction. By using RBS/C, the depth dependent elastic strain was deduced. The strain is higher at the depth close to the interface and decreases towards the surface. The negative tetragonal distortion was explained by considering the lattice mismatch and thermal mismatch in ZnO thin film. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Silver is well known to show peculiar catalytic activities in several oxidation reactions. In the present paper, we investigate the catalytic activity of silver catalysts toward CO-gelective oxidation in H-2. XRD, TEM, TPD, and in situ FTIR techniques were used to characterize the catalysts. The pretreatment of the catalysts was found to have great influence on their performance. The pretreatment in 02 improves the activity of the silver catalyst, whereas He pretreatment at 700 degreesC or direct hydrogen pretreatment shows an inverse effect. Silver catalysts undergo massive structural change during oxygen pretreatment at high temperatures (> 500 degreesC), and there is solid evidence for the formation of subsurface oxygen species. The existence of this silver-subsurface oxygen structure facilitates the formation of active sites on silver catalysts for CO oxidation, which are related to the size, morphology, and exposed crystal planes of the silver particles. Its formation requires a certain temperature, and a higher pretreatment temperature with oxygen is required for the silver catalyst with a smaller particle size. It is observed, for the first time, that adsorbed CO on the surface of silver particles can directly react with subsurface oxygen species at low temperatures (e.g., RT), and the surface oxygen can migrate into and refill these subsurface sites after the consumption of subsurface oxygen by the reaction with CO. This finding provides a new reaction pathway for CO oxidation on silver catalyst. (C) 2004 Published by Elsevier Inc.

Bone exostosis has long been described in the literature, appearing in most cases as a torus palatinus or mandibularis. These two variations are relatively common and affect approximately 30% of the world's population. Incidence is even higher when human skulls are examined post mortem, indicating that in some cases the exostosis is small and cannot be seen under the soft tissue. Removal of an exostosis is usually associated with the construction of a prothesis, but in rare cases such as the present, the lesion enlarges enough to affect speech and feeding. Few studies have reported the removal of such a large exostosis, and all were conducted in a hospital environment. In this case, complete removal was successfully conducted in an ambulatory clinic under local anesthesia.

AIMS Cystatin C is a well established marker of kidney function. There is evidence that cystatin C concentrations are also associated with mortality. The present analysis prospectively evaluated the associations of cystatin C with all-cause and cardiovascular (CV) mortality in a well-characterized cohort of persons undergoing angiography, but without overt renal insufficiency. METHODS Cystatin C was available in 2998 persons (mean age: 62.7 ± 10.5 years; 30.3% women). Of those 2346 suffered from coronary artery disease (CAD) and 652 (controls) did not. Creatinine (mean ± SD: 83.1 ± 47.8 vs. 74.1 ± 24.7 μmol/L, p = 0.036) but not Cystatin C (mean ± SD: 1.02 ± 0.44 vs. 0.92 ± 0.26 mg/L, p = 0.065) was significantly higher in patients with CAD. After a median follow-up of 9.9 years, in total 898 (30%) deaths occurred, 554 (18.5%) due to CV disease and 326 (10.9%) due to non-CV causes. Multivariable-adjusted Cox analysis (adjusting for eGFR and established cardiovascular risk factors, lipid lowering therapy, angiographic coronary artery disease, and C-reactive protein) revealed that patients in the highest cystatin C quartile were at an increased risk for all-cause (hazard ratio (HR) 1.93, 95% CI 1.50-2.48) and CV mortality (HR 2.05 95% CI 1.48-2.84) compared to those in the lowest quartile. The addition of cystatin C to a model consisting of established cardiovascular risk factors increased the area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve for CV and all-cause mortality, but the difference was statistically not significant. However, reclassification analysis revealed significant improvement by addition of cystatin C for CV and all-cause mortality (p < 0.001), respectively. CONCLUSION The concentration of cystatin C is strongly associated with long-term all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in patients referred to coronary angiography, irrespective of creatinine-based renal function.
