Entrepreneurship is having the courage to transform an idea in reality and with it achieve personal, nancial and recognition satisfaction. The psychological ability to handle failure has proven essential in success. We analysed the importance of idiosyncratic psychological aspects in the success of entrepreneurs through an observational study accompanying 20 entrepreneurs from the idea presentation phase to company incorporation. During the observation period 4 distinct psychological phases of the entrepreneurs were observed, being it possible to describe them as follows: absorption of information and knowledge; application of the gathered knowledge to their speci c cases; frustration generated by criticism, namely from investors who didn’t recognise the value of their projects; realism and implementation of the project. Having passed more than 6 months after the analysis period, one can verify that the entrepreneurs who have travelled the 4 phases are today developing their projects being that the remaining ones are in a similar situation as at the end of the initial two months. Conclusion: The ability to cope with frustration and rejection is a determinant factor in the success of the entrepreneur. The ability to learn from rejection, more than resilience help the entrepreneur to proceed.

Several motivations have prompted the scientific community towards the application of hybrid magnetic carbon nanocomposites in catalytic wet peroxide oxidation (CWPO) processes. The most relevant literature on this topic is reviewed, with a special focus on the synergies that can arise from the combination of highly active and magnetically separable iron species with the easily tuned properties of carbon-based materials. These are mainly ascribed to increased adsorptive interactions, to good structural stability and low leaching levels of the metal species, and to increased regeneration and dispersion of the active sites, which are promoted by the presence of the carbon-based materials in the composites. The most significant features of carbon materials that may be further explored in the design of improved hybrid magnetic catalysts are also addressed, taking into consideration the experimental knowledge gathered by the authors in their studies and development of carbon-based catalysts for CWPO. The presence of stable metal impurities, basic active sites and sulphur-containing functionalities, as well as high specific surface area, adequate porous texture, adsorptive interactions and structural defects, are shown to increase the activity of carbon materials when applied in CWPO, while the presence of acidic oxygen-containing functionalities has the opposite effect.

Aim of the study: To introduce and describe FlorNExT®, a free cloud computing application to estimate growth and yield of maritime pine (Pinus pinaster Ait.) even-aged stands in the Northeast of Portugal (NE Portugal). Area of study: NE Portugal. Material and methods: FlorNExT® implements a dynamic growth and yield modelling framework which integrates transition functions for dominant height (site index curves) and basal area, as well as output functions for tree and stand volume, biomass, and carbon content. Main results: FlorNExT® is freely available from any device with an Internet connection at: http://flornext.esa.ipb.pt/. Research highlights: This application has been designed to make it possible for any stakeholder to easily estimate standing volume, biomass, and carbon content in maritime pine stands from stand data, as well as to estimate growth and yield based on four stand variables: age, density, dominant height, and basal area. FlorNExT® allows planning thinning treatments. FlorNExT® is a fundamental tool to support forest mobilization at local and regional scales in NE Portugal.
