In this study, the preparation of the xerogel anilinepropylsilica is reported. The ability of the xerogel for extracting Al(III), Cr(III) and Fe(III) from ethanol was investigated at 25 ºC. The xerogel adsorption capacities were obtained from the adsorption isotherms by using the batch method. Flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) was used to estimate the concentration of metal ions in solution. The adsorption affinity follows the series Cr(III) > Fe(III) > Al(III) and the maximum adsorption capacities of the metal ions were 0.61, 0.52 and 0.43 mmol g-1, respectively.

This review deals with silica based hybrid materials obtained by the sol-gel method. It involves concepts, classifications and important definitions regarding the sol-gel method that allows obtaining materials with organic and inorganic components dispersed in a molecular or nanometric level. We discuss the properties and characteristics of hybrid materials related to experimental synthesis conditions. We devote a special attention to the nanostructured materials, where the self-organization is imposed by the organic component. Finally, we present some important applications of these materials based on their specific properties.

Liquid polybutadiene (PBLH) was modified with maleic anhydride (MA). The material (PBLHM) was characterized and used to prepare hybrid materials by blending with glycerol-plasticized cassava starch (TPS) and an organophilic clay at 5 wt% content. Processing was performed by extrusion under mild conditions and led to TPS/PBLHM/clay hybrids, at 95/5 to 85/15 TPS/PBLHM compositions, which were characterized by contact angle measurements, X-ray diffraction and mechanical analysis. The results revealed a reduction in the hydrophilicity and the reinforcement of the hybrid materials. Biodegradability tests showed that the addition of clay and of PBLHM led to materials with high biodegradability.

Micro-mesoporous hybrid materials of ZSM-12/MCM-41 type with different micro- and mesoporosity contributions were prepared by a procedure that uses the desilication of the zeolite in an alkaline medium, followed by recrystallization onto the mesostructure, where the zeolite is used as the silica source in the formation of mesoporous phase. The materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption-desorption at 77 K, scanning electron microscopy and thermal analysis. The results showed that the methodology utilized is efficient for obtaining hybrid materials of ZSM-12/MCM-41 type with optimized micro-and mesoporosity.

The obtention of silica and cyclodextrin hybrid materials was accomplished by refluxing them in xylol using citric acid as a binding agent. The materials were characterized by infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and elemental analysis. Evidence for the docking of cyclodextrins α and γ was substantiated based on the variation in band intensity for groups such as ≡Si-OH. Additional docking evidence includes the displacement of some of the bands that are related to cyclodextrin such as the deformation of the C-H axial bond. The α and γ-CDSi materials were characterized as amorphous compounds. The products obtained in the synthesis showed changes in the decomposition temperatures of their isolated constituents, in which the mass of α and γ-CD docked to the silica surface gave the estimated values of 41% and 47%, respectively. The elemental constituents were shown to be consistent and close to their relative theoretical values. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that a reduction in the percentage of the hybrids was proportional to the amount of lost mass. This new material is an improvement over synthesized organosilane materials because the operator and the environment benefit from a less toxic methodology. In addition, the material has several potential applications in complexation systems with cyclodextrin.

Large scale preparation of hybrid electrical actuators represents an important step for the production of low cost devices. Interfacial polymerization of polypyrrole in the presence of multi-walled carbon nanotubes represents a simple technique in which strong interaction between components is established, providing composite materials with potential applications as actuators due to the synergistic interaction between the individual components, i.e., fast response of carbon nanotubes, high strain of polypyrrole, and diversity in the available geometry of resulting samples.

ZnO is a semiconductor material largely employed in the development of several electronic and optical devices due to its unique electronic, optical, piezo-, ferroelectric and structural properties. This study evaluates the properties of Ba-doped wurtzite-ZnO using quantum mechanical simulations based on the Density Functional Theory (DFT) allied to hybrid functional B3LYP. The Ba-doping caused increase in lattice parameters and slight distortions at the unit cell angle in a wurtzite structure. In addition, the doping process presented decrease in the band-gap (Eg) at low percentages suggesting band-gap engineering. For low doping amounts, the wavelength characteristic was observed in the visible range; whereas, for middle and high doping amounts, the wavelength belongs to the Ultraviolet range. The Ba atoms also influence the ferroelectric property, which is improved linearly with the doping amount, except for doping at 100% or wurtzite-BaO. The ferroelectric results indicate the ZnO:Ba is an strong option to replace perovskite materials in ferroelectric and flash-type memory devices.

In order to select superior hybrids for the concentration of favorable alleles for resistance to papaya black spot, powdery mildew and phoma spot, 67 hybrids were evaluated in two seasons, in 2007, in a randomized block design with two replications. Genetic gains were estimated from the selection indices of Smith & Hazel, Pesek & Baker, Williams, Mulamba & Mock, with selection intensity of 22.39%, corresponding to 15 hybrids. The index of Mulamba & Mock showed gains more suitable for the five traits assessed when it was used the criterion of economic weight tentatively assigned. Together, severity of black spot on leaves and on fruits, characteristics considered most relevant to the selection of resistant materials, expressed percentage gain of -44.15%. In addition, there were gains for other characteristics, with negative predicted selective percentage gain. The results showed that the index of Mulamba & Mock is the most efficient procedure for simultaneous selection of papaya hybrid resistant to black spot, powdery mildew and phoma spot.

ABSTRACTSocially oriented ventures have provided livelihoods and social recognition to disadvantaged communities in different corners of the world. In some cases, these ventures are the result of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs. In Latin America, this type of undertaking has responded positively to unmet social needs. The social cause drives these organizations and their human resources and they give high value to organizational cause-fit. This paper presents empirical evidence of the effects of perceived cause-fit on several worker attitudes and behaviors. Psychological contract theory was adopted as theoretical background. Employees working in a hybrid (for-profit/socially oriented) Colombian organization created by a CSR program participated in the survey. Data provided by 218 employees were analyzed using PLS structural equation modeling. The results suggest the ideological components of the employee-employer relationship predict positive attitudes and cooperative organizational behaviors towards hybrid organizations.

Two cytotypes (2n=4x=36 and 2n=6x=54) found in Salvinia minima Bak. are discussed, the first from Brazil and the second from Argentina. The hexaploid cytotype, presumably a hybrid between Salvinia minima and S. sprucei Kuhn, was collected from the Solimões River near Manaus, Brazil and from Trinidad. Discussing its intermediate morphology, the authors attemp to explain the hybridization as a result of the seasonal and sporadic occurrence of Salvinia sprucei in the Amazonian basin, assuming that the still unknown chromosome number of the latter species would correspond to the diploid level (2n=2x=18).

The occurrence of hybrid dysgenesis was investigated in Drosophila sturtevanti Duda, 1927 using diagnostic crosses similar to those used for induction of dysgenics traits in D. melanogaster. Reciprocal test crosses were made, at 27° C, between an old laboratory strain of D. sturtevanti (COL, from Colombia), assumed to be an M'-like strain, and eight freshly collected strains from several natural populations. The gonadal dysgenesis indices were under 10% in most of crosses, except in hybrids of COL with I27, a strain from Minas Gerais (Brazil), in which the index values were moderate in both directions of crosses (25.71 and 12.87). The smallest productivity was also observed in hybrids of females COL mated to I27 males. No causal relationship between the observed gonadal dysgenesis and mobilization of P element or another transposable element could be effectively established.
