Chromium(III) at the ng L-1 level was extracted using partially silylated MCM-41 modified by a tetraazamacrocyclic compound (TAMC) and determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emision spectrometry (ICP OES). The extraction time and efficiency, pH and flow rate, type and minimum amount of stripping acid, and break- through volume were investigated. The method's enrichment factor and detection limit are 300 and 45.5 pg mL-1, respectively. The maximum capacity of the 10 mg of modified silylated MCM-41 was found to be 400.5±4.7 µg for Cr(III). The method was applied to the determination of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) in the wastewater of the chromium electroplating industry and in environmental and biological samples (black tea, hot and black pepper).

Silica gel chemically modified with 2-Aminotiazole groups, abbreviated as SiAT, was used for preconcentration of copper, zinc, nickel and iron from kerosene, normally used as a engine fuel for airplanes. Surface characteristics and surface area of the silica gel were obtained before and after chemical modification using FT-IR, Kjeldhal and surface area analysis (B.E.T.). The retention and recovery of the analyte elements were studied by applying batch and column techniques. The experimental parameters, such as shaking time in batch technique, flow rate and concentration of the eluent (HCl- 0.25-2.00 mol L-1) and the amount of silica, on retention and elution, have been investigated. Detection limits of the method for copper, iron, nickel and zinc are 0.77, 2.92, 1.73 and 0.097 mg L-1, respectively. The sorption-desorption of the studied metal ions made possible the development of a preconcentration method for metal ions at trace level in kerosene using flame AAS for their quantification.

This paper discusses a rapid and sensitive method developed to determine trace levels of mercury in natural water samples by cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometry using a preconcentration system composed by mini-column packed with 100 mg of 2-aminothiazol modified silica gel (SiAT) coupled on-line with the spectrometer's cold vapor generator system. The optimum preconcentration conditions are also described here. The preconcentrated Hg(II) ions were eluted directly from the column to the spectrometer's cold vapor generator system using 100 µL of 2 mol L-1 hydrochloric acid and the retention efficiency achieved exceeded 95%. The enrichment factors determined were 29, 38 and 46 using 3, 4 and 5 mL of preconcentrated aqueous solutions containing 400 ng L-1 of Hg. The detection limit calculated was 5 ng L-1. The preconcentration procedure was applied to determine trace level mercury in spiked river water samples.

The objective of this work was to synthesize nanosilicas with different degree of hydrophobicity by the sol-gel method, using tetraethyl orthosilicate as a precursor. For this purpose, 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APS) and 1,1,1,3,3,3 - hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS), were added during synthesis as modifiers. A commercial biopolymer (Hexamoll Dinch, BASF) intended for packaging of apples, was added to the new nanosilicas. The materials obtained were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, potentiometric titration, porosity, specific surface area and hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity by wetting test. Colorimetry was used to evaluate change in apple pulp color after contact with the different silicas.

The filling of capillaries via the sol-gel process is growing. Therefore, this technical note focuses on disseminating knowledge acquired in the Group of Analytical Chemistry and Chemometrics over seven years working with monolithic stationary phase preparation in fused silica capillaries. We believe that the detailed information presented in this technical note concerning the construction of an alternative high pressurization device, used to fill capillary columns via the sol-gel process, which has promising potential for applications involving capillary electrochromatography and liquid chromatography in nano scale, may be enlightening and motivating for groups interested in developing research activities within this theme.

Since its inception in the 80's, capillary electrophoresis has matured into a well established technique for the separation and analysis of complex samples. One of its strongest aspects is the ability to handle materials from a diversity of chemical classes, ranging from few to millions of Daltons. This is only possible because several modes of electrophoresis can be performed in a single capillary format. In this work, relevant aspects of capillary zone electrophoresis in its three modes (free solution, micellar and gel), capillary isoelectric focusing and capillary isotachophoresis are discussed and many representative applications are presented.

Monolithic stationary phases represent a new generation of chromatographic separation media. These phases consist of a continuous separation bed prepared by in situ polymerization or consolidation inside the column tubing. In recent years, their simple preparation procedure, unique properties and excellent performance have attracted quite remarkable attention in liquid chromatography and capillary electrochromatography. This review summarizes the preparation, characterization and applications of monolithic stationary phases. The analytical potential of these columns is demonstrated with separations involving various families of compounds in different separation modes.

In this work, we report the synthesis and the photoluminescence features of a Eu(III)-doped modified silica matrix obtained by the sol-gel method. The matrix was prepared by reaction between tetraethylorthosilicate and phenyltriethoxysilane alkoxide. The hydrolysis occurred using basic catalysis. The solids were treated at 100, 200 and 300 ºC during 4 h and the structure was determined by thermogravimetric analysis (TG/DTG), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR 29Si and 13C), infrared spectroscopy (IR) and photoluminescence (PL). The PL spectra display the Eu(III) lines characteristic of the ion, 5D0 -> 7F J (J=0, 1, 2, 3, 4), the blue emission as ascribed in the silica matrix. The NMR and TG showed the stability of hybrid silica.

Capillary electrochromatography (CEC) is a separation technique in which the mobile phase flow is based on the application of a voltage across a packed capillary, which generates an electroosmotic flow that transports the analytes along the capillary toward the detector. As it combines the separation mechanisms of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and of capillary electrophoresis (CE), CEC can be considered a hybrid of HPLC and CE. This review presents some fundamental aspects of CEC and is focused on the instrumental advances of the technique, such as column technology, operation modes and detection systems, presenting recent papers on these topics and some applications and perspectives about CEC.

The carrot leaf dehydration conditions in air circulation oven were optimized through response surface methodology (RSM) for minimizing the degradation of polyunsaturated fatty acids, particularly alpha-linolenic (LNA, 18:3n-3). The optimized leaf drying time and temperature were 43 h and 70 ºC, respectively. The fatty acids (FA) were investigated using gas chromatography equipped with a flame ionization detector and fused silica capillary column; FA were identified with standards and based on equivalent-chain-length. LNA and other FA were quantified against C21:0 internal standard. After dehydration, the amount of LNA, quantified in mg/100 g dry matter of dehydrated carrot leaves, were 984 mg.

A capillary electrophoresis (CE) method was developed and validated for determination of cetirizine dihydrochloride in tablets and compounded capsules. The electrophoretic separation was performed in an uncoated fused-silica capillary (40 cm x 50 μm i.d.) using 20 mmol L-1 sodium tetraborate buffer (pH 9.3) as background electrolyte, a hydrodinamic sample injection at 50 mBar for 5 s, 20 KV applied voltage at 25 °C, and detection at 232 nm. The proposed method was compared with the high performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method previously validated for this drug, and statistical analysis showed no significant difference between the techniques.
