The Authors present a case of subcutaneous mucormycosis occurring in a patient with clinical and biochemical evidence of diabetic ketoacidosis. The clinical, mycological and histopathological features are described, emphasizing the relevance of a rapid diagnosis in order to stablish early treatment. The clinical forms of mucormycosis and the main associated conditions are briefly reviewed as well as the most probable conditions which may lead to the enhanced susceptibility to infection in the diabetic patient in ketoacidosis. The recovery of Rhizopus oryzae from the air of the room of the patient suggests a nosocomial infection acquired through contamination of venous puncture site by air borne spores.

Trophozoites from cultures of Entamoeba histolytica strains isolated and grown axenically in Brazil (ICB-CSP, ICB-462 and ICB-32) were used for immune sera production and for characterization of their antigens by using electrophoretic and glycoproteic profiles, in parallel with a standard strain isolated and kept under axenic conditions in USA (HK-9). Hyperimmune sera, presenting high antibody titers with homologous and heterologous antigens, were obtained. The four strains in study revealed similar and complex electrophoretic and glycoproteic profiles showing polypep-tides with molecular weights ranging from 200 to less than 29 kDa. No significant differences were detected between the pathogenic and non-pathogenic strains.

A case of phaeohyphomycosis caused by Bipolaris hawaiiensis is reported. The patient, an immunocompetent host, presented a verrucous lesion on the first finger of the left foot. Dematiaceous septate hyphae and yeast-like elements were seen in direct and histological examination. The isolated strain was identified on the basis of micro and macromorphological aspects. Treated with electrocoagulation, the lesions healed and presented no relapse after two years follow-up.

Serum samples were obtained from 154 individuals infected with Entamoeba histolytica (78 symptomatic and 76 asymptomatic). Twelve had trophozoites in the feces whereas 142 had only cysts. The sera were used to test the existence of antibodies anti-Entamoeba histolytica employing the Indirect Hemagglutination (IHA), Indirect Immunofluoresccnce (IFAT), Complement Fixation Reaction (CFR) and Counterimmunoelectrophoresis (CIEP). For those individuals with trophozoites in their feces, 75.0 were positive by IHA and IFAT, 83.0 by CFR and 41.7 by CIEP. In individuals who had only cysts, positive results by the same tests were respectively, 5.6%, 12.0%, 19.0% and 5.6%. The difference in relation to the tilers of antibodies detected through IHA, IFAT, CFR and CIEP and in relation to the presence of trophozoites or cysts in the feces was significative for four immunological reactions when X², was employed (P < 0.05).

In this study we have tried to verify whether the interaction "in vitro" with bacteria or small pieces of normal hamster liver would modify the pathogenic behavior of axenic strains of E. histolytica: avirulent ones (ICB-32 and ICB-RPS), of attenuated virulence (ICB-CSP and HM1) and of mean virulence (ICB-462). Every attempt to render virulent, recover or increase the virulence of axenic strains of E. histolytica has failed

Entamoeba histolytica: detection of coproantigens by purified antibody in the capture sandwich ELISA
Resumo:
A sensitive and specific Capture Sandwich ELISA (CSE) was developed using polyclonal purified rabbit antibodies against three different axenic strains of Entamoeba histolytica: CSP from Brazil and HM1 - IMSS from Mexico, for the detection of coproantigens in fecal samples. Immunoglobulin G (IgG) againstis E. histolytica was isolated from rabbits immunized with throphozoites whole extract in two stages: affinity chromatography in a column containing E. histolytica antigens bound to Sepharose 4B was followed by another chromatography in Sepharose antibodies 4B-Protein A. A Capture Sandwich ELISA using purified antibodies was able to detect 70ng of amebae protein, showing a sensitivity of 93% and specificity of 94%. The combination of microscopic examination and CSE gave a concordance and discordance of 93.25% and 6.75%, respectively. It was concluded that CSE is highly specific for the detection of coproantigens of E. histolytica in feces of infected patients, is quicker to perform, easier and more sensitive than microscopic examination.

At this moment, the duality of species suggested for E. histolytica is being considered for discussion. In order to contribute to settling this question, we investigated the possibility of conversion of avirulent ameba to virulent ones, as well as, the possibility of increasing virulence of virulent strains, by means of association with bacteria. Five strains of E. histolytica were employed, two of them regarded as avirulent and three virulent ones. Amebas were associated with the bacteria Escherichia coli 055 and 0115, previously demonstrated as capable to modify the pathogenic behavior of E. histolytica. Changes in virulence of amebas were assessed by cytopathic effect upon cultured mammal cells and erythrophagocytosis. The virulence of pathogenic strains was significantly increased after bacteria association in opposition to what was observed for nonpathogenic ones, which were not influenced by bacteria association.

We present a case of subcutaneous hyalohyphomycosis due to Acremonium recifei, a species whose habitat is probably the soil, first identified in 1934 by Arêa Leão and Lobo in a case of podal eumycetoma with white-yellowish grains and initially named Cephalosporium recifei. A white immunocompetent female patient from the state of Bahia, Brazil, with a history of traumatic injury to the right hand is reported. The lesion was painless, with edema, inflammation and the presence of fistulae. Seropurulent secretion with the absence of grains was present. Histopathological examination of material stained with hematoxylin-eosin showed hyaline septate hyphae. A culture was positive for Acremonium recifei. Treatment with itraconazole, 200 mg/day, for two months led to a favorable course and cure of the process. We report for the first time in the literature a case of subcutaneous hyalohyphomycosis due to Acremonium recifei in a immunocompetent woman. Treatment with itraconazole 200 mg/day, for two months, resulted in cure.

Lethality caused by administration of oxamniquine and praziquantel to mice infected with Schistosoma mansoni, and their respective controls (uninfected), has been studied. As the results indicate, the infected animals clearly showed higher mortality rates when praziquantel was used. Surprisingly, it may be noted that exactly the contrary occurs in relation to the use of oxamniquine, inasmuch as marked higher mortality rates were seen in the control animals (uninfected). These observations lead to the conclusion that further toxicological studies of antischistosomal drugs using. S. mansoni infected animals are needed.
