The authors report neuromuscular manifestations in a 45-year-old woman after consuming octopus meat (Octopus sp.). The patient presented malaise, paresthesias in perioral and extremity areas, intense muscular weakness and arterial hypotension, followed by severe itch and disseminated cutaneous rash. Gastrointestinal manifestations and fever were not observed, reducing the probability of alimentary poisoning. The presence of muscular and neurological symptoms suggests neurotoxin action, which could have been ingested by the victim from the octopus salivary glands or from an accumulation of toxins in the meat, or by an unknown mechanism. There is little known about toxins of the Octopus genus and this communication is important alert to the possibility of poisoning in humans that eat octopus and its differentiation from alimentary poisonings arising from incorrect conservation of seafood.

Foi realizado um estudo sobre o perfil de ácidos graxos e colesterol na manta de polvo comum, Octopus vulgaris, capturado na praia de Camocim - CE, no decorrer dos meses de abril a outubro em coletas bimensais. Apesar do ácido oleico (C18: 1n9) apresentar comportamento uniforme ao longo do tempo de coleta, a maioria dos demais ácidos graxos foi afetada (p = 1%) pela época de coleta. Os níveis dos ácidos araquidônico (C20:4n6), oleico (C18:1n9), esteárico (C18:0) e linoleico (C18:2n6) foram superiores àqueles reportados na literatura. O somatório de ácidos graxos poli-insaturados e monoinsaturados revelou que o óleo de polvo apresenta um teor significativo de ácidos graxos insaturados. Foi observado um aumento gradativo de colesterol ao longo do tempo estudado e um comportamento inverso para a relação de ácidos graxos n3/n6.

Abstract The search for chemopreventive/chemoprotective compounds in marine organism has been extensively reported; however, the presence of these compounds in octopus has been incipiently explored. In this research, the antimutagenic, antiproliferative, and antioxidant potential of three crude extracts (methanolic, acetonic, and hexanic) from Paroctopus limaculatus was investigated. Antimutagenic activity against aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) was evaluated through the Ames test using Salmonella typhimurium tester strains TA98 and 100. Antiproliferative activity was assessed using the standard MTT (3-(4,5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2,5-diphenyl-2-H-tetrazolium bromide) assay on M12.C3.F6 murine cell line. Antioxidant activity was assessed using the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) and ABTS (2,2′-Azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) methods. Hexanic extract showed the highest antimutagenic and antiproliverative activities inhibiting 80 and 43% of mutagenicity induced by AFB1 for TA98 and TA100, respectively, and showing a high antiproliferative activity at 200 and 100 µg/mL. However, when the antioxidant activity was evaluated at a concentration of 50 mg/mL, the methanolic fraction exerted inhibition of 98 and 96 % ABTS and DPPH radicals, respectively. RP-HPLC and 1H-RMN analyses suggested the presence of double bonds with extended conjugation and oxygenated compounds such as alcohols, esters, ethers or ketones. These results suggested that hexanic and methanolic extract form octopus contained compounds with chemoprotective and antioxidant properties.

Abstract There are no precedents concerning the quality of Octopus maya during chilled storage. This study evaluated the shelf life of the red octopus in chilling storage (4oC) and the correlation of the sensory quality index with microbiological counting and the biochemical indicators (hypoxanthine, histamine and volatile amines). A total of 112 whole raw octopi (average weight of 896 g) were randomly selected from seven batches and exposed to 4°C for 18, 24, 48, 72, 84, 96, and 100 h. The histamine concentration (91.7%), followed by the counts of psychrotrophic bacteria (5.5%) and hypoxanthine (2.2%), were the predictors from the redundancy analysis that better explained the changes taking place during the chilling hours. After 72 h of chilling, the microbial count was determined to be log 4.7 CFU/g, and the octopus samples were classified as B quality (minor sensory quality defects) based on the sensory quality scale. Although the samples were not classified as unacceptable at 100 h of refrigeration by the sensory index, the level of histamine reached the defect action level (5 mg/100 g) as ruled by the International Food Safety Authorities. The shelf life of the red octopus in chilling storage was predicted to be 119 h.

Cardiomiopatia de Takotsubo é uma causa rara de aneurisma ventricular esquerdo agudo, na ausência de coronariopatia, só recentemente descrita na literatura mundial. Os sintomas podem assemelhar-se aos do infarto agudo do miocárdio com dor torácica típica. A imagem do balonamento ventricular sugestivo de haltere ou "Takotsubo" (dispositivo utilizado no Japão para prender Octopus) é característico desta nova síndrome e usualmente há desaparecimento do movimento discinético até o 18º dia do início dos sintomas, em média.

The South American sea lion, Otaria flavescens (Shaw, 1800) population is steadily expanding along the Patagonian coast of Argentina in the last decades. However, little is known about the feeding ecology of the species in the area. The aim of this study was to analyze the food habits of O. flavescens from 91 scats collected at Río Negro province, during the winter and spring of 2005. Fish occurred in 96% of scats containing prey remains, followed by cephalopods (26%). Raneya brasiliensis (Kaup, 1856) was the most frequent and abundant species occurring in 58.6% of samples and constituting almost 50% of fish predated. Second in importance were Porichthys porosissimus (Cuvier, 1829) and Cynoscion guatucupa (Cuvier, 1830) in terms of occurrence (%FO 20.7) and numbers (29.6%) respectively. The squid Loligo gahi (d'Orbigny, 1835) was the most frequent cephalopod prey (42.1%), whereas Octopus tehuelchus (d'Orbigny, 1834) was the most abundant (77%). The higher amount and diversity of prey found in the spring in comparison with the winter season might be related to a higher feeding activity of seals or to a seasonal increase in food availability in the area.

This paper deals with two Brazilian species of the genus Pachyschelus Sol., namely: P. urvillege sp. n. and P. mimus Obenberger, 1925. P. urvillege sp. n. is described based on specimens reared from leafmined Urvillea glabra Cam. (Sapindaceae); it seems to be related to P. vanrooni Obenb., 1923, from which it can be distinguished by the absence of sexual dichroism, structural details of female pygidium and, as supposed, by the male genitalia (still unknown in P. vanrooni). P. mimus Obenberger, 1925, was reared from Psidium araça Raddi (Myrtaceae), and the male allotype is described. Oviposition, larval cephalic capsules and mines of both species are described, as well as other developmental stages of P. urvilleae. Some larvae of the latter were found parasitized by Tetrastichus sp.

Embora os estudos de frugivoria e dispersão de sementes sejam importantes para a realização de planos de manejo e recuperação de ambientes degradados, pouco tem sido pesquisado sobre o assunto no cerrado brasileiro. Neste trabalho são apresentados aspectos da frugivoria e dispersão das sementes de Ocotea pulchella Mart. (Lauraceae) por aves. Treze espécies de aves foram registradas consumindo os frutos de O. pulchella em 72 horas de observação focal, entre os meses de agosto e outubro de 1999, numa área de cerrado da região central do estado de São Paulo (21º58' S, 47º52' W), Brasil. As principais espécies potencialmente dispersoras foram o sabiá-pardão, Turdus leucomelas (Muscicapidae), o sabiá-docampo, Mimus saturninus (Mimidae), o bem-te-vi, Pitangus sulphuratus (Tyrannidae) e as guaracavas, Elaenia spp. (Tyrannidae). Não foram encontradas variações significativas no número de visitas nos diferentes intervalos de hora quando todas as espécies foram analisadas em conjunto e quando cada espécie foi analisada separadamente. Não houve variação significativa também no tempo de permanência sobre as plantas entre as diferentes espécies de aves. A taxa de consumo diferiu significativamente entre elas, tendo sido encontrada correlação positiva significativa entre o peso das diferentes espécies e o número médio de frutos consumidos por visita. O tempo de permanência sobre a planta e o número de frutos consumidos foram positivamente correlacionados para Elaenia spp., para a maria-cavaleira, Myiarchus tyrannulus (Tyrannidae) e para o sabiá-laranjeira, Turdus rufiventris (Muscicapidae). Embora espécies primariamente frugívoras não tenham sido observadas consumindo os frutos de O. pulchella, as espécies oportunistas pareceram favorecer a eficiência da dispersão, mantendo altas freqüências de visitas, altas taxas de consumo e permanecendo por curtos períodos de tempo sobre as plantas.
