We carried out an electrochemical study of the cobalt electrodeposition onto glassy carbon electrode from an aqueous solution containing 10-2 M of CoSO4 + 1 M (NH4)2SO4 at natural pH 4.5. The potentiostatic study indicated a progressive 3D nucleation and growth during the deposition process. The average diffusion coefficient calculated for this system was 2.65 X 10-6 cm² s-1 while the ΔG for the formation of stable nucleus was 6.50 X 10-20 J/nuclei. The scanning electron microscopy images indicated the formation of small and homogeneous nucleus onto GCE of approximately 300 nm.

In present work, we analyzed the copper electrodeposition onto GCE (System I) and HOPGE (System II) from perchlorate solutions. The current density transients obtained from system I and II were well described through a kinetic mechanism that involves four different contributions: (a) a Langmuir type adsorption process, b) an electron transfer from Cu2+→Cu+, (c) a 3D nucleation limited by a mass transfer reaction and (d) a proton reduction process. It was observed that the values of the nucleation rate, the number of active nucleation sites were increased with the overpotential and they are bigger onto GCE in comparison with HOPGE.

A glassy carbon electrode modified with ruthenium hexacyanoferrate (RuOHCF) was investigated as an electrocatalyst for the detection of procaine with the aim of quantification in pharmaceutical and forensic samples. The RuOHCF films were prepared by electrochemical deposition, and the parameters used in this process (concentration of RuCl3, K3Fe(CN)6, temperature, and number of cyclic voltammograms recorded in the modification step) were carefully optimized. Based on the optimal conditions achieved, the RuOHCF modified electrode allows the determination of procaine at 0.0 V with a detection limit of 11 nmol L-1using square wave voltammetry.

Metals such as copper and zinc are essential for the development and maintenance of numerous enzymatic activities, mitochondrial functions, neurotransmission, and also for memorization and learning. However, disruption in their homeostasis can cause neurodegenerative disorders such as the Alzheimer and Parkinson diseases. In this work, the speciation of copper and zinc in urine samples was carried out. To this end, free and total metal concentrations were determined by square wave anodic stripping voltammetry using a glassy carbon electrode coated with bismuth film. The digestion of the samples was performed in a microwave with the addition of oxidant reagents.

AbstractThis work describes the development of a biosensor based on the tyrosinase enzyme (Tyr) for the determination of phenol (PHEN) in laboratory effluent samples derived from ammoniacal nitrogen analysis of the water samples from the Muquém dam in the city of Cariús, CE, using square-wave voltammetry (SWV). The electrode modification consisted of the immobilization of gold nanoparticles, multi-walled carbon nanotubes, cobalt phthalocyanine, and Tyr on a glassy carbon electrode. The electrolyte, pH, enzyme quantity, and voltammetric parameters were optimized to detect PHEN. The analytical curves presented a linear range from 4.97 × 10-6 mol L-1 to 6.10 × 10-5 mol L-1, and the detection limit (DL) and quantitation limit (QL) values were 4.81 × 10-6 mol L-1 and 4.97 × 10-6mol L-1, respectively. The repetition of measurements with the same biosensor and repetition for three other prepared biosensors exhibited a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 5.50 and 1.75%, respectively. The percentage recovery of PHEN in effluent samples varied from 86.40 to 105.04%. The stability of the biosensor was evaluated (at 21 days) with satisfactory results, showing 97.86% of the initial response. Moreover, the DL and recovery percentages agreed with the established values from CONAMA and ABNT, respectively. Thus, the electrode configuration developed seems a promising tool in the detection and quantification of PHEN in complex samples.

TLC autographic assays revealed in the hexane extract of Iryanthera juruensis (Myristicaceae) the presence of two compounds, with antioxidant properties towards beta-carotene. They were isolated and identified as 3-methyl-sargachromenol (1) and sargachromenol (2). Further investigation of the hexane extract led to isolations of 3-methyl-sargaquinoic acid (3) and sargaquinoic acid (4). The electrochemical behaviour of these compounds was studied in CH2Cl2/Bu4NBF4 at glassy carbon electrode. The phenolic group in both tocotrienols 1 and 2 are oxidized at +0.23V and +0.32V and their oxidation potentials are correlated with the observed antioxidant activities and oxidation mechanism of alpha-tocopherol. The reductive voltametric behaviour of quinone function in both plastoquinones 3 and 4 is discussed.

The present work describes a low-cost electrochemical "wall-jet" detector for flow analysis. The electrolytic solution enters into the cell through a tube of stainless steel (200 to 300 µm i.d), reaching to the center of the working electrode perpendicularly and then being mixed to the remaining solution in the cell, which flows under atmospheric pressure into a waste reservoir. The proposed electrochemical detector can be used with any type of working electrode, from commercial to home-made, such as glassy carbon and metallic electrodes (modified or unmodified), which enlarge the applications of the electrochemical detector.

In this paper some studies concerning the electroreduction of Mo(VI) in sulphuric acid solutions are described. We have shown that at suitable experimental conditions very stable molybdenum oxide films can be electrochemically deposited at glassy carbon electrodes, the reduction of bromate occurring at less negative potentials on the modified surface. Coulometric experiments have shown that bromide is not the only product of the catalytic bromate reduction by the molybdenum film and species like BrO2 may have part in this process. Based on chronoamperometric curves recorded at -0.60 V, analytical curves have been obtained for the reduction of bromate in the 0.1 - 0.8 mM range, a limit of detection of 20 µM for bromate being determined.

Electrochemical methods applied to organic species transformation has been used as excellent synthesis tools. C-C bonds can be established, making possible polymer synthesis by both anodic and cathodic reactions of suitable monomer species at the working electrode surface. In this study, anodic procedure was used to electropolymerization of 2-mercaptobenzimidazole at reticulated glassy carbon (RGC) surface. 2-mercaptobenzimidazole presents ligand sites towards Hg2+, Ag+ and Cu2+ ions. The obtained material has been able to adsorb the above mentioned ions in aqueous solution.

This paper presents some results on the employ of recycled graphite electrode obtained from used common 1.5 V batteries in the preparation of modified electrode and the electrocatalytical hydrogenation of benzaldehyde and of n-valeraldehyde. This inexpensive and easy to obtain electrode was prepared by coating it with a 1:1 mixed film of poly-(allylfenil ether): poly-[allyl p-(2-ethylammonium) benzene ether] and introduction of dispersed platinum particles by ion exchange and reduction of PtCl4-2. Electroreduction of H+ from aqueous H2SO4 using the proposed electrode hydrogenated the substrates in a way comparable with that of vitreous carbon electrode.

The synthesis and characterization of different platinum nanoparticle/carbon nanotube nanocomposite samples are described along with the application of these nanocomposites as electrocatalysts for alcohol oxidation. Samples were prepared by a biphasic system in which platinum nanoparticles (Pt-NPs) are synthesized in situ in contact with a carbon nanotube (CNT) dispersion. Variables including platinum precursor/CNT ratio, previous chemical treatment of carbon nanotubes, and presence or absence of a capping agent were evaluated and correlated with the characteristic of the synthesized materials. Samples were characterized by Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis and transmission electron microscopy. Glassy carbon electrodes were modified by the nanocomposite samples and evaluated as electrocatalysts for alcohol oxidation. Current densities of 56.1 and 79.8/104.7 mA cm-2 were determined for the oxidation of methanol and ethanol, respectively.

In this work, we describe the immobilization of the dinuclear compound [Cu2(apyhist)2Cl2](ClO4)2 (1) and its derived cations complexes, obtained in water solution or by deprotonation of the imidazolate moiety in the ligand leading to a cyclic tetranuclear species, in the Nafion® membrane on glass carbon electrode surface. After that, we studied the influence of the equilibrium in the electrocatalytic activity towards the reduction of H2O2 in the development of an amperometric sensor for the analytical determination of hydrogen peroxide. This strategy proved successful, and the electrochemical behaviour of the all complexes formed within the Nafion® coatings was characterized. We also provide evidence that its related cyclic tetranuclear imidazolate-bridged complex acts as a catalysts for the intramolecular, two-electron reduction of H2O2.

The construction and optimization of a device that can be applied to electrochemical studies in flat micro regions are described. This was developed as an attempt to study small regions of metallic samples, whose properties may differ completely from its macroscopic behavior and for studies in highly resistive medium. Some results were obtained for individual grains of polycrystalline samples, welded regions, pure copper, platinum, glassy carbon, single crystals of Cu-Zn-Al alloy, and steel in biodiesel without electrolyte intentionally added. The device showed to be useful for the proposed purpose, allowing to be automated and has potential possibilities of other applications.

In this paper, a silica-gel-modified carbon paste electrode (Si-gel/CPE) was used to determine the anti-cancer drug emodin by anodic stripping differential pulse voltammetry (ASDPV). The effects of the silica-gel content, the pH of the supporting electrolyte, and the scan rate on the oxidation current of emodin were investigated. The oxidation currents of emodin obtained from ASDPV measurements were linearly correlated with the concentration in the range of 5.0 × 10-9 to 300.0 × 10-9 mol L-1. The limit of detection was determined to be 1.5 × 10-9 mol L-1. The current method was successfully applied to determine emodin in a knotweed root sample, with recovery rate of 92.5% to 98.3%.

An amperometric sensor was constructed, by using humic acids to immobilize Fe3+ ions on a carbon paste electrode (CPE-HA-Fe), and used for ascorbic acid (H2A) determination. The cyclic voltammogram of the electrode showed electrochemical response due to the Fe3+/Fe2+ couple at E1/2=+0.78 V vs SCE, using 0.5 mol L-1 KCl and 0.2 mol L-1 acetate/0.020 mol L-1 phosphate buffer, at pH = 5.4, as supporting electrolyte. When H2A is added to the electrolyte solution it is observed an oxidation process. The oxidation current, obtained by chronoamperommetry at +0.87 V vs SCE, is proportional to the concentration, represented by the equation I(µA) = 7.6286 [H2A] (mmol L-1) + 1.9583, r = 0.9996, for concentrations between 0.0 and 1.4 mmol L-1. The electrode showed high stability and was used for H2A determination in a natural orange juice.
