El presente artículo tiene por objetivo analizar el problema de la reunificación entre la República Popular China y Taiwán en la última década, en el marco de dos hitos: por un lado, la promulgación de la Ley Antisecesión del 14 de marzo de 2005 y, por otro, la firma del Acuerdo Marco de Cooperación Económica el 30 de junio de 2010.

The Pinnotheridae family is one of the most diverse and complex groups of brachyuran crabs, many of them symbionts of a wide variety of invertebrates. The present study describes the population dynamics of the pea crab Austinixa aidae (Righi, 1967), a symbiont associated with the burrows of the ghost shrimp Callichirus major (Say, 1818). Individuals (n = 588) were collected bimonthly from May, 2005 to September, 2006 along a sandy beach in the southwestern Atlantic, state of São Paulo, Brazil. Our data indicated that the population demography of A. aidae was characterized by a bimodal size-frequency distribution (between 2.0 and 4.0 mm and between 8.0 and 9.0 mm CW) that remained similar throughout the study period. Sex ratio does not differ significantly from 1:1 (p > 0.05), which confirms the pattern observed in other symbiontic pinnotherids. Density values (1.72 ± 1.34 ind. • ap.-1) are in agreement with those found for other species of the genus. The mean symbiosis incidence (75.6%) was one of the highest among species of the Pinnotheridae family, but it was the lowest among the three studied species of the genus. Recruitment pattern was annual, beginning in May and peaking in July, in both years, after the peak of ovigerous females in the population (from March to May). Our findings describe ecological and biological aspects of A. aidae similar to those of other species of this genus, even from different geographic localities.

Este estudio apunta a conocer la percepción que los profesionales de la salud (médicos, enfermeras y auxiliares de enfermería) tienen acerca de su preparación en el cuidado de los enfermos terminales y determinar sus conocimientos sobre la legislación de cuidados paliativos. Se ha realizado un estudio transversal, en un hospital de Granada (España), mediante la aplicación de un cuestionario ad hoc. Los resultados muestran que la mayoría del personal ha trabajado con pacientes en el final de su vida, pero sólo la mitad cree tener la formación adecuada para cuidarlos. Una parte considerable dice no conocer la legislación actual en cuidados paliativos. La mayoría de los profesionales plantearía la retirada de terapias para el mantenimiento de la vida y desconocen el mecanismo para informar sobre la cumplimentación del Testamento Vital, como indica el Plan de Cuidados Paliativos de Andalucía (España).

Phytoremediation strategies utilize plants to decontaminate or immobilize soil pollutants. Among soil pollutants, metalloid As is considered a primary concern as a toxic element to organisms. Arsenic concentrations in the soil result from anthropogenic activities such as: the use of pesticides (herbicides and fungicides); some fertilizers; Au, Pb, Cu and Ni mining; Fe and steel production; coal combustion; and as a bi-product during natural gas extraction. This study evaluated the potential of pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan), wand riverhemp (Sesbania virgata), and lead tree (Leucaena leucocephala) as phytoremediators of soils polluted by As. Soil samples were placed in plastic pots, incubated with different As doses (0; 50; 100 and 200 mg dm-3) and then sown with seeds of the three species. Thirty (pigeon pea) and 90 days after sowing, the plants were evaluated for height, collar diameter and dry matter of young, intermediate and basal leaves, stems and roots. Arsenic concentration was determined in different aged leaves, stems and roots to establish the translocation index (TI) between the plant root system and aerial plant components and the bioconcentration factors (BF). The evaluated species showed distinct characteristics regarding As tolerance, since the lead tree and wand riverhemp were significantly more tolerant than pigeon pea. The high As levels found in wand riverhemp roots suggest the existence of an efficient accumulation and compartmentalization mechanism in order to reduce As translocation to shoot tissues. Pigeon pea is a sensitive species and could serve as a potential bioindicator plant, whereas the other two species have potential for phytoremediation programs in As polluted areas. However, further studies are needed with longer exposure times in actual field conditions to reach definite conclusions on relative phytoremediation potentials.

Recent studies on coffee (Coffea arabica L.) cultivation in agroforestry systems in Southern Brazil have shown the potential of partial shading to improve management of this crop. The objective of this work was to evaluate microclimatic conditions and their effects on coffee production of plants shaded with pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan) in comparison to unshaded ones, from May 2001 to August 2002 in Londrina, State of Paraná, Brazil. The appraised microclimatic characteristics were: global radiation, photosynthetic and radiation balance; air, leaf and soil temperatures; and soil humidity. Shading caused significant reduction in incident global solar radiation, photosynthetically active radiation and net radiation, and attenuated maximum leaf, air and soil temperatures, during the day. Shade also reduced the rate of cooling of night air and leaf temperatures, especially during nights with radiative frost. Soil moisture at 0-10 cm depth was higher under shade. The shaded coffee plants produced larger cherries due to slower maturation, resulting in larger bean size. Nevertheless, plants under shade emitted less plagiotropic branches, with smaller number of nodes per branch, and fewer nodes with fruits, resulting in a large reduction in coffee production. These results show the need to find an optimal tree density and management that do not compromise coffee production and protect against extreme temperatures.

OBJETIVO: Avaliar a eficácia da biópsia percutânea por agulha grossa (BPAG) de tumores de partes moles guiada por tomografia computadorizada (TC), em relação ao sucesso na obtenção de amostra para análise, e comparar o diagnóstico da BPAG com o resultado anatomopatológico da peça cirúrgica, quando disponível. MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS: Foram revisados os prontuários e laudos diagnósticos de 262 pacientes com tumores de partes moles submetidos a BPAG guiada por TC em um centro de referência oncológico entre 2003 e 2009. RESULTADOS: Das 262 biópsias realizadas, foi possível a obtenção de amostra adequada em 215 (82,1%). Os tumores mais prevalentes foram os sarcomas (38,6%), carcinomas metastáticos (28,8%), tumores mesenquimais benignos (20,5%) e linfomas (9,3%). Foi possível realizar graduação histológica em 92,8% dos pacientes com sarcoma, sendo a maioria (77,9%) classificada como alto grau. Do total de pacientes, 116 (44,3%) realizaram cirurgia para exérese e confirmação diagnóstica. A BPAG mostrou acurácia de 94,6% na identificação de sarcomas, com sensibilidade de 96,4% e especificidade de 89,5%. A graduação histológica teve concordância significativa entre a BPAG e a peça cirúrgica (p < 0,001; kappa = 0,75). CONCLUSÃO: A BPAG guiada por TC demonstrou elevada acurácia diagnóstica na avaliação de tumores de partes moles e na graduação histológica dos sarcomas, permitindo um adequado planejamento terapêutico.

The use of organic matter that improves the physical, chemical and biological soil properties has been studied as an inducer of suppressiveness to soilborne plant pathogens. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of different sources and concentrations of organic matter on tomato bacterial wilt control. Two commercially available organic composts and freshly cut aerial parts of pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan) and crotalaria (Crotalaria juncea) were incorporated, in concentrations of 10, 20 and 30 % (v/v), into soil infested with Ralstonia solanacearum. The soil with the fresh organic matter of pigeon pea and crotalaria was incubated for 30 and 60 days before planting. Tomato seedlings of cv. Santa Clara were transplanted into polyethylene bags with 3 kg of the planting substrate (infested soil + organic matter). The wilting symptoms and percentage of flowering plants were evaluated for 45 days. All evaluated concentrations with incorporation and incubation for 30 days of aerial parts of pigeon pea and crotalaria controlled 100% tomato bacterial wilt. With 60 days of incubation, only the 10 % concentration of pigeon pea and crotalaria did not control the disease. These results suggest that soil incorporation of fresh aerial parts of pigeon pea and crotalaria is an effective method for bacterial wilt control.

Management of plant-parasitic nematodes with the use of nematicides has not been recommended for small farmers that grow yam in the Northeastern region of Brazil, due to its high cost and residue toxicity. The use of plants with antagonistic effect to nematodes and green manure which improves soil chemical, physical and biological characteristics can be a viable and low cost alternative to control parasitic nematodes. This work aimed to evaluate the effect of crotalaria (Crotalaria juncea) and pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan) plants on the control of yam nematodes. Three experiments were carried out. The first was conducted under in vitro conditions to evaluate the nematostatic and nematicide effect of extracts from fresh and dry matter of the above ground parts of crotalaria, pigeon pea, and the combination of both. The second experiment was carried out under greenhouse conditions to evaluate the effect of soil amendment with crotalaria, pigeon pea, and the combination of both in the infectivity of Scutellonema bradys, using tomato plants as the host plant. The third experiment was conducted under field conditions to evaluate the effect of crotalaria, pigeon pea, and the combination of both, cultivated between yam planting rows and incorporated to soil surface, on yam nematodes. The aqueous extract obtained form fresh matter of crotalaria had a nematicide effect of 100% for S. bradys. Extracts from dry matter of both crotalaria and pigeon pea did not have any nematicide effect, but had a nematostatic effect. Incorporation of crotalaria to soil inhibited infectivity of S. bradys in tomato seedlings. These results showed that planting crotalaria alone or in combination with pigeon pea, between the yam planting rows, is an efficient method for controlling S. bradys and Rotylenchulus reniformis associated with yams. Crotalaria can be used for controlling these plant-parasitic nematodes in soil.

The inheritance of resistance to powdery mildew in the pea cultivar MK-10 and some histological aspects of infection were assessed. For the inheritance study, F1, F2, backcrosses and F3 generations of MK-10 crossed with two susceptible populations were evaluated. Histological evaluations included percentage of germinated conidia, percentage of conidia that formed appresoria, percentage of conidia that established colonies, and number of haustoria per colony. Segregation ratios obtained in the resistance inheritance study were compared by Chi-square (ײ) test and the histological data were analyzed by Tukey's test at 5% probability. It was concluded that resistance of MK-10 to powdery mildew is due to a pair of recessive alleles since it is expressed in the pre-penetration stage and completed by post-penetration localized cellular death, characteristic of the presence of the pair of recessive alleles er1er1.

O médico moderno precisa aguçar seus atributos humanos, adaptar-se a contextos variados e manter a educação permanente. A formação médica não costuma ocorrer no contexto da prática clínica real, mas no hospital, com ênfase na doença. As Diretrizes Curriculares Nacionais dos Cursos de Graduação em Medicina preconizam a articulação entre a universidade e o sistema de saúde e a habilitação à educação permanente. Logo, os cenários da prática devem ser os ambulatórios próprios dos serviços de saúde, com um aprendizado voltado para as necessidades de saúde da comunidade. Existe hoje um fortalecimento da Medicina Clínica Acadêmica, que combina cuidados de saúde com pesquisa, ensino e administração. O aluno deve assimilar a visão moderna da relação médico-paciente, respeitando as decisões compartilhadas, tarefa que exige trabalhar habilidades em comunicação. As instituições de ensino e de assistência à saúde são coadjuvantes neste processo, bem como os meios de comunicação. A inserção no cenário da prática médica tem que ser integrada a todas as disciplinas do curso, permeando o currículo e permitindo que o estudante volte sua atenção para as necessidades de saúde da comunidade. Estabelecer um currículo inovador exige que os educadores compreendam o esgotamento do modelo tradicional de ensino, fundamentado na doença e na transmissão de conhecimentos, que afasta o aluno da visão prática da Medicina. O enfoque pedagógico moderno enfatiza aspectos formativos. Seus principais domínios são: comportamento do paciente, atitude e papel do médico, interações médico-paciente e fatores socioculturais relativos aos cuidados com a saúde.

OBJETIVO: avaliar a imunoexpressão da proteína HER-2 em punção biópsia aspirativa de carcinoma de ductos infiltrantes da mama e nos espécimes cirúrgicos correspondentes. Correlacionar a imunoexpressão da proteína HER-2 com o grau histológico. MÉTODO: foram examinados 48 esfregaços fixados em álcool, previamente corados pela técnica de Papanicolaou, e cortes histológicos de blocos de parafina do tecido correspondente. Todos foram submetidos à técnica de imuno-histoquímica, utilizando o método da avidina-biotina-peroxidase com um anticorpo policlonal (A0485-Dako). As reações foram realizadas simultaneamente com recuperação antigênica. A avaliação dos resultados foi feita por método semiquantitativo, segundo a graduação do HercepTest. Foram considerados positivos apenas os casos graduados em 3+. RESULTADOS: observou-se positividade de 39,6% nos esfregaços e 35,4% nos cortes histológicos respectivos, sendo a concordância cito-histológica nos casos positivos quase perfeita (kappa 0,82). A utilização do método de avaliação dos cortes histológicos mostrou-se reprodutível nos esfregaços e padronizou a interpretação dos resultados. A correlação entre a positividade para proteína HER-2 e o grau histológico não foi significante, mas houve tendência a imunoexpressão mais freqüente em tumores menos diferenciados. CONCLUSÃO: a positividade das reações imunocitoquímicas nos esfregaços foi comparável à obtida nos cortes histológicos, podendo portanto o material de punção aspirativa por agulha fina, previamente corado pela técnica de Papanicolaou, ser utilizado na avaliação da imunoexpressão da proteína HER-2.
