Seroprevalence of Chagas disease in schoolchildren from two municipalities of Jequitinhonha Valley, Minas Gerais, Brazil; six years following the onset of epidemiological surveillance

Six years after the beginning of the epidemiological surveillance of Chagas disease in Berilo and José Gonçalves de Minas, Jequitinhonha Valley, MG, Brazil, a serological inquiry was performed to observe whether the transmission of this endemy was occurring in this area. A randomized sample of 1,412 children seven to 14 years old, was screened. Six asymptomatic children were found to be positive, leading to 0.4% of prevalence. Hemoculture confirmed infection in five out of the six positive cases. Additional epidemiological investigation revealed important antecedents, such as disease reports in relatives and predisposing ecological and housing conditions. Our results demonstrated similar seroprevalence (0.4%) in schoolchildren, ranging from seven to 14 years old, and that were observed six years ago (0.2%) for children 0-9 year-old. Thus, considering the constant presence of Panstrogylus megistus in the peridomicile these findings emphasize the need of continuous improved epidemiological surveillance of Chagas disease in this region.

A new genus of Holothyrina: Neothyridae (Arachnida, Anactinotrichida) from the Manaus area, Amazonas state, Brazil

A new genus of Neothyridae, type species Diplothyrus schubarti sp. n., is described from the leaf litter of a primary forest in the Reserva Florestal Adolpho Ducke, Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil. The two pairs of lateral excretory orifices instead of a single one in the type genus Neothyrus of the family Neothyridae, are diagnostic. A protonymph of Neothyrus ana Lehtinen, 1981, is also described as the first known nymphal stage of this family.

Serologic evidence of Leishmania infection in free-ranging wild and domestic canids around a Brazilian National Park

Transmission of disease between wildlife, domestic animals, and humans is of great concern to conservation issues and public health. Here we report on the prevalence of anti-Leishmania sp. antibodies in 21 wild canids (7 Chrysocyon brachyurus, 12 Cerdocyon thous, and 2 Lycalopex vetulus) and 74 free domestic dogs (Canis familiaris) sampled around the Serra do Cipó National Park. In dogs, the apparent prevalence was 8.1% and in wild canids it was 19% (2 crab-eating foxes, C. thous, and 2 maned wolves, C. brachyurus). Management of the domestic dog population with evaluation of incidence changes in humans and wildlife, and enlightenment on the role of wild reservoirs are essential issues for future action and research.

O controle da hemorragia pós-parto com a técnica de sutura de B-Lynch: série de casos

OBJETIVO: apresentar uma técnica cirúrgica para pacientes submetidas ao parto cesáreo e que evoluem com hemorragia refratária ao uso de medicamentos. MÉTODOS: o critério de seleção das pacientes era falha do tratamento farmacológico no controle da hemorragia pós-parto e o desejo da paciente em preservar o útero. As pacientes foram submetidas ao parto cesáreo e evoluíram com hemorragia pós-parto imediata refratária ao uso de ocitocina, ergometrina e misoprostol. Aplicamos a técnica de sutura descrita por B-Lynch sem modificações. Com fio cromado catgut-2 ou poliglactina-1, transfixamos o útero em seis pontos, conforme padronização. Após compressão manual do útero realizada pelo assistente, o fio é tracionado pelas suas extremidades pelo cirurgião e é aplicado um nó duplo seguido de dois nós simples, para em seguida realizar-se a histerorrafia. RESULTADOS: utilizamos o fio cromado catgut-2 agulhado em três casos e poliglactina-1 agulhado em um. Nos quatro casos houve parada imediata do sangramento vaginal após aplicação da sutura. Não houve qualquer complicação durante a realização do procedimento e nem no puerpério imediato e tardio das quatro pacientes. CONCLUSÕES: esta técnica representa uma alternativa cirúrgica para o manejo da hemorragia pós-parto. Com sua aplicação relativamente fácil, rápida e segura, pode representar uma redução da morbimortalidade materna em nosso país.
