Clinical and radiological aspects in Melnick-Needles syndrome

Melnick-Needles syndrome is an X-linked dominant bone dysplasia, lethal in males, characterized by a typical facies and characteristic radiological findings: including sclerosis of skull base and mastoids, S-shaped appearance of tibia; cortical irregularities with a ribbon appearance of the ribs. About 48 well-documented cases have been reported, most of them were sporadic. Parental transmission has been published in only 11 kindreds. We are presenting the first Brazilian family with mother-daughter transmission.The proposita presented the typical clinical and radiological features with characteristic facies, severe thoracic cage restriction and pulmonary hypertension. Her mother was more mildly affected.

Meaning of becoming mother and son/daughter through massage


Objective: Revealing the experience of mothers when massaging their children to know the phenomenon in the context of a mother-child healthy development. Method: This is a qualitative study with a phenomenological approach carried out with 11 women who massaged their children and answered the guiding question: What did the experience of massaging your child mean to you? Results: The experience of massaging their children meant the development of their being a mother and of being a son/daughter, in addition to developing the attachment relationship between them. The massage can operationalize this integrality, become a tool of communication, stimulation and promotion of secure attachment, by promoting the loving interaction between mother and child. Conclusion: This practice should be considered as an option in the programs that promote the comprehensive health of the mother and child.



Cumulative Vulnerability: A Case Study on intrafamilial violence, Drug Addiction and Adolescent Pregnancy

A pregnant adolescent’s vulnerability increases when she is a victim of intrafamilial violence and drug addiction, which cause physical and biopsychosocial damage to the mother and her baby. Objective Present and analyze the case of an adolescent who is addicted to drugs, pregnant and the victim of lifelong intrafamilial violence. Method A case study based on a semi-structured interview conducted in the Obstetrics Emergency Unit at the Teaching Hospital of the University of São Paulo. The data were interpreted and analyzed using Content Analysis. Results intrafamilial violence experienced at the beginning of the adolescent’s early relationships seriously affected her emotional maturity, triggering the development of psychopathologies and leaving her more susceptible to the use and abuse of alcohol and other drugs. The adolescent is repeating her history with her daughter, reproducing the cycle of violence. Conclusion Adolescent pregnancy combined with intrafamilial violence and drug addiction and multiplies the adolescent’s psychosocial vulnerability increased the adolescent’s vulnerability.

Defoliation of strawberry mother plants for the production of runner tips

The objective of this work was to determine the sink-source relationships and their effects on the number and growth of runner tips of 'Camino Real' strawberry stock plants. Three types of sources were evaluated: one defoliation at 96 days after planting (DAP), two defoliations at 50 and 96 DAP, and mother plants without defoliation. Four types of sink were accessed: runner tips collected weekly and monthly, four stolons with rooted runner tips in pots, and four freely-grown stolons. A completely randomized experimental design was used in a split-plot arrangement, with four replicates. The source types were placed in the plots, and sink types in the subplots. The number of runner tips, the crown diameter, and the dry matter mass were determined. Number and growth of tips were higher on plants without defoliation, and decreased 44.7% on twice-defoliated mother plants. The two-defoliation management did not reduce runner tip dry matter mass only on plants with rooted stolons, which produced runner tips 50% heavier. Defoliation of mother plants bearing rooting stolons can be used to reduce their growth, without reducing the emission and growth of runner tips.

Sob o signo neoliberal: as relações internacionais da América Latina

As relações internacionais da América Latina são vistas sob o ângulo da transição da diplomacia do desenvolvimento para a diplomacia neoliberal. Os estudos de relações internacionais, particularmente no Brasil e na Argentina, fundamentam a interpretação do autor sobre benefícios e malogros do paradigma neoliberal, visto como uma opção ideológica. A noção de Estado logístico é sugerida como alternativa estratégica ao Estado normal.

O alargamento da União Européia e a América Latina

O alargamento da União Européia em 2004, com a adesão inédita de dez países de uma só vez, representa um movimento de concentração endógena, com a absorção de meios e esforços intra-europeus. Esse alargamento acarreta dificuldades adicionais para as relações externas da União, inclusive com a América Latina. O legado cultural parcialmente comum da Europa com países como os latino-americanos é insuficiente para alterar o campo das relações econômicas e comerciais prevalentes. Um obstáculo adicional está na inconsistência política e conceitual de "América Latina", que não é um interlocutor ou parceiro orgânico. As iniciativas políticas da União e seus eventuais desdobramentos não ultrapassam o plano da retórica afável e das boas intenções ou ficam no plano da assistência do desenvolvimento. A União Européia e seus países-membro, em virtude das competências concorrentes em matéria de relações bi e multilaterais, preferem lidar com os blocos equivalentes, como o Mercosul ou a Comunidade Andina, cujos perfis se delineiam melhor.

Multilateralismo e unilateralismo na política mundial: América Latina frente à ordem mundial em transição

No artigo se analisa a evolução da situação da América Latina no sistema internacional no início do século XXI. Traça, primeiramente, linhas panorâmicas sobre a configuração da ordem mundial subseqüente à guerra fria e sobre o impacto que as mudanças na política exterior norte-americana exerceram sobre o multilateralismo e o unilateralismo. Em segundo lugar avaliam-se as formas pelas quais esses impactos reverberaram na inserção internacional da América Latina. Procura-se, em seguida, listar e avaliar as mudanças introduzidas pelos Estados Unidos no exercício da sua política internacional após o 11 de Setembro.

Uma análise crítica do acordo de associação estratégica entre a União Européia e a América Latina e o Caribe: a Cúpula de Viena

No artigo se realiza um exame crítico das relações entre a União Européia, América Latina e Caribe. O objetivo é explicitar a "associação estratégica" entre aqueles parceiros, proposta no Rio de Janeiro em 1999 e reiterada pela Cúpula de Viena em 2006. O texto pretende mostrar ainda por que estas reuniões não conseguiram uma aproximação efetiva.

O artigo explora as contribuições brasileiras na dinâmica migratória intra-regional vigente entre países da América Latina e Caribe. A dinâmica migratória intra-regional inclui as diásporas e os fluxos de brasileiros residentes nos países vizinhos e suas contrapartes latino-americanas e caribenhas residentes no Brasil. Verifica-se que o Brasil é o quinto emissor e quarto receptor de migrantes intra-regionais.

Etanol e biodiesel como recursos energéticos alternativos: perspectivas da América Latina e da Ásia

Este trabalho apresenta as perspectivas latino-americanas e asiáticas na emergente indústria dos biocombustiveis. As possibilidades brasileiras de participação na indústria e no comércio internacional de etanol e de biodiesel são discutidas. Uma questão sobre os possíveis parceiros "estratégicos" do Brasil neste setor é levantada: os enormes mercados consumidores de países desenvolvidos ou os emergentes e também famintos consumidores asiáticos de energia?

América Latina a inicios de la segunda década del siglo XXI: entre el regionalismo estratégico y la regionalización fragmentada

El artículo analiza la evolución del regionalismo en América Latina desde los años noventa. Expone las opciones que se plantean a los países en sus políticas exteriores frente a las iniciativas de Estados Unidos y los cambios en el sistema internacional. Se expone la importancia funcional de las potencias emergentes (PEMS) y las regiones en la fase actual del capitalismo. Finalmente el artículo analiza las perspectivas del regionalismo en América Latina tanto en el sistema internacional como en la construcción de un modelo de gobernanza regional.
