Dialypetalanthus fuscescens is an Amazonian endemic species with problematic taxonomic position. This neotropical rainforest tree belongs to the monospecific Dialypetalanthaceae. In the present work, we analysed the leaf cell-wall polysaccharide composition of Dialypetalanthus fuscescens and compared it to that of Bathysa meridionalis (Rubiaceae-Cinchonoideae). Glycosyl composition and glycosyl-linkage analysis indicated that both species have similar cell wall composition. Arabinogalactans were the major component of the pectic polysaccharides and xylans, although being reported in minor amounts in dicots, were found to be the predominant hemicellulosic polysaccharide in cell walls of both species. These findings are in agreement with previous data on cell wall composition reported for Rubiaceae and corroborate the current suggestion of the possible link between this family and Dialypetalanthaceae.

Plants accumulate antimicrobial compounds (phytoalexins) in response to a wide variety of microorganisms. Mucor ramosissimus Samutsevitsch is a saprobe capable of inducing phytoalexin production in soybean cotyledons and in the leaves of tropical Rubiaceae on whose surface it has been found. In the present study, the elicitor from M. ramosissimus was partially purified and the activity compared to that of a glucan elicitor isolated from Phytophthora sojae. Optimal isolation of the elicitor (based on fungal growth, yield of spores and elicitor activity) was achieved by autoclaving spores obtained from nine day-old cultures of the fungus. The elicitor was precipitated with ethanol and purified by chromatography on an anion exchange column, which retained the elicitor, and a Concanavalin A-affinity matrix, to which the elicitor did not bind. The purification resulted in a considerable increase (six-fold) in the specific activity of the elicitor. Neutral sugar composition, analyzed by HPLC, revealed the predominance of mannose, followed by glucose and galactose, whereas colorimetric quantification showed the presence of uronic acids. GC-MS analysis of the elicitor revealed the predominance of glucuronic acid and mannose. These results suggest that fragments of mucoran-type polysaccharides are the phytoalexin elicitors present in the spores of the saprobe M. ramosissimus. Our results also indicate for the first time that soybean cotyledon tissues can recognize fragments of glucuronic-acid heteropolymers as phytoalexin elicitors.

This study investigates the Drosophilidae species associated to fruiting bodies of fungi in forested and anthropized environments of the Atlantic Rain Forest Biome, in south and southeastern Brazil. We collected samples of imagoes flying over and emerging from fruiting bodies of species of five fungi families, in six collection sites. We obtained 18 samples, from which emerged 910 drosophilids of 31 species from the genera Drosophila Fallen, 1823, Hirtodrosophila Duda, 1923, Leucophenga Mik, 1886, Mycodrosophila Oldenberg, 1914, Scaptomyza Hardy, 1849, Zaprionus Coquillett, 1901 and Zygothrica Wiedemann, 1830. The Drosophila species collected on fungi, as well as Zaprionus indianus Gupta, 1970, had previously been recorded colonizing fruits, demonstrating their versatility in resource use. Most of these species belong to the immigrans-tripunctata radiation of Drosophila. Our records expands the mycophagous habit (feeding or breeding on fungi) to almost all species groups of this radiation in the Neotropical region, even those supposed to be exclusively frugivorous. Assemblages associated to fungi of forested areas were more heterogeneous in terms of species composition, while those associated to fungi of anthropized areas were more homogeneous. The drosophilids from anthropized areas were also more versatile in resource use.

In the present paper the authors describe the male and female genitalia of various species of Zelurus (=Spiniger). There were not always obtained reliable specific characters, specially in nearly related species. Futhermore there were studied 59 species and subspecies, from Dutch Guiana, Brazil, Peru, Bolivia and Argentine. New locality records and synonymic notes are given and some allotypes are designated. Eight species and two subspecies, from Brazil and Argentine, proved to new to science.

The author redescribes two species of the genus Ormia: Ormia bilimekii Brauer et Bergenstamm, 1889 and ormia lineifrons Sabrosky, 1953, Brasil. Two new species, Ormia rachoui sp. n. from Corcovado, Estado da Guanabara and Ormia lopesi sp. n. from Angra dos Reis, Estado do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, are also described.

Studying thirteen speciemens of the genus Ormia Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830, and one of Euphasiopteryx Towsend, 1915, the author describes six new species: Ormia mendesi sp. n., Ormia lenkoi sp. n., Ormia carreirai sp. n., Ormia crespoi sp. n., Ormia wygodzinskyi sp. n., and Euphasiopteryx lenti sp. n. from Brasil and Argentina. The importance of the ocelli as a generic character, as stated by Towsend (1936) is discussed based on the absence of ocelli in Ormia mendesi sp. n. and Ormia crespoi sp. n. and its presence in Euphasiopteryx lenti sp. n. A key for the determination of Ormia species is presented based chiefly on the males external morphological characters.
