UM ORIENTALISTA ALEMÃO NO BRASIL IMPERIAL. CHRISTIAN FRIEDRICH SEYBOLD, O TUTOR DE D. PEDRO II

Resumo Este artigo visa discutir a relação entre o segundo imperador do Brasil, Pedro d'Alcântara, e seu último mestre de línguas semíticas e orientais, o alemão Christian Friedrich Seybold (1859-1921). Uma leitura preliminar dos diários do monarca nos chamou a atenção para a enorme quantidade de menções e referências àquele orientalista alemão, o que revela, de certa forma, a importância que o professor ocupava na vida de d. Pedro II. No entanto, ao passo que Seybold está presente em numerosas páginas dos diários, nos causa certa estranheza que tal fato tenha merecido pouca ou nenhuma consideração por parte dos biógrafos do imperador, já que o contato frequente entre eles durante cinco anos se resume a algumas poucas linhas e alusões esparsas. Partindo de uma releitura crítica do material disponível na historiografia brasileira sobre Seybold, pretendemos aportar novos dados para o estudo bio-bibliográfico daquele que foi uma figura atuante na vida intelectual de d. Pedro II, presente até os últimos dias de vida do soberano.

Should reproductively isolated populations of Lutzomyia longipalpis sensu lato receive taxonomically valid names?

A group of 18 research workers involved in different aspects of the biology of Lutzomyia longipalpis discussed whether or not it is important to give taxonomically valid names to populations that have been defined by biological, biochemical and molecular methods to be reproductively isolated. The type material of this medically important species has been lost and because of this it was recommended that a colony should be established from insects captured in the region of the type area and that their description should serve as the basis for future descriptions. It was pointed out that there is a lack of uniformity in the naming of closely related American sand flies and that some of the differences between populations of Lu. longipalpis are greater than those between accepted species. The majority of the participants agreed that the populations that have been defined in the literature as sibling species should be named.

Three replacement names for species of the subfamily Leiinae (Diptera, Mycetophilidae)

New names are proposed for three cases of homonymy in the Mycetophilidae subfamily Leiinae, one in the genus Docosia Winnerz, one in Leia Meigen, and one in Tetragoneura Winnertz. Docosia garretti nom. nov. is proposed for Docosia setosa Garrett, 1925; Leia walkeri nom. nov. for Leia bimaculata (Walker, 1848); and Tetragoneura sasakawai nom. nov. for Tetragoneura tibialis Sasakawa, 1961. The context of each new name is discussed.

Histiocitose x (síndrome de hand-schuller-christian): relato de caso

Os autores relatam o caso de uma criança do sexo feminino, quatro anos de idade, que apresentava cefaléia, irritabilidade, otorréia e exoftalmia unilateral. No estudo tomográfico e na radiologia convencional encontraram-se grandes áreas líticas no crânio e na sua base. O restante do esqueleto não evidenciou anormalidades. O diagnóstico de histiocitose X (síndrome de Hand-Schuller-Christian) foi confirmado pelo mielograma. Este estudo mostra achados radiológicos e citológicos, além de apresentar uma revisão da literatura sobre o caso.

Family names and the length of the Y chromosome in Brazilian blacks

The variability of the lengths of the heterochromatic and euchromatic segments of the human Y chromosome was studied by a quantitative method of densitometric measurement in 60 normal and unrelated black individuals (30 with and 30 without devotional surnames), living in Salvador, Bahia, northeastern Brazil. Thirty normal and unrelated Caucasian individuals of European origin, living in Curitiba, Paraná, south Brazil, were included as controls. The heterochromatic segment and total Y chromosome lengths were greater in caucasians than in blacks without devotional surnames, and these were greater than in blacks with devotional surnames. These findings are in agreement with previous reports of a higher percentage of black ancestry in blacks carrying devotional surnames than those carrying non-devotional ones.
