Unambiguous assessments of reaction paths for selected pericyclic reactions

Four commonplace concerted reactions are examined using (i) correlation diagrams, (ii) frontier molecular orbital analyses for transition states, (iii) Zimmerman-Dewar analyses for transition states and (iv) modified Zimmerman-Dewar analyses for transition states. Only the latter approach is consistently satisfactory.

Hückel and Möbius annulenes: relationships between their Hückel-level orbitals and their Hückel-level energies

The problem of convenient access to quantitative Hückel-level descriptions of Möbius and Hückel annulenes for undergraduate lectures about aromaticity is discussed. Frost circle, Zimmerman circle, double circle and Langler semicircular mnemonics are described. The relationship between spectra (complete sets of secular equation roots) for an isoconjugate pair of Hückel and Möbius annulenes and the corresponding acyclic polyene with one less carbon is fully developed. In addition to providing an alternative path to exact spectrum roots, this relationship provides immediate access to almost half of the eigenfunctions for an isoconjugate annulene pair. The remaining eigenfunctions may be obtained very easily.

A structural bridge between alternant and non-alternant hydrocarbons

A simple set of trimethylene-substituted even, fully-pi-bonded, non-alternant monocycles is shown to have several key features in common with acyclic, even alternant polyenes at the Hückel level. These non-alternant molecules provide a bridge between alternant and non-alternant hydrocarbons. This topic might serve as a useful addition to Hückel theory courses targeted at senior undergraduate students.

Disjoint nonclassical hydrocarbons have very unstable lowest-lying singlet states: a PM3 study

Earlier workers have suggested that disjoint hydrocarbons have nearly-degenerate lowest-lying singlet and triplet states while non-disjoint (or joint) hydrocarbons should be ground-state triplets. PM3 results for an appropriate selection of alternant hydrocarbons are inconsistent with that generalization: disjoint, nonclassical, alternant hydrocarbons show the strongest predilection for triplet ground states.

The trouble with resonance energies: a Hückel theory topic

Resonance energies are shown to be quasithermodynamic in character. Hence, they are generally unsuitable as bases for anticipating kinetic stabilities. Examples are provided, leading to the conclusion that those who intend the word 'aromatic' to mean chemically unreactive, need to carry out full Hückel calculations in order to rank hydrocarbons using the frontier orbital energies.

A paradiplomacia financeira no Brasil da República Velha, 1890-1930

Neste artigo, visa-se a analisar um caso de extroversão de governos estaduais no campo do financiamento externo no período da chamada República Velha (1890-1930) no Brasil. Com base na definição de "paradiplomacia financeira", argumenta que a experiência histórica brasileira nesse aspecto teria sido um caso típico de ação paradiplomática. Amplo levantamento estatístico dos empréstimos externos por estados, o resgate das fontes documentais primárias sobre o assunto e a contextualização histórica pertinente dão sustentação à caracterização do período como uma fase de paradiplomacia financeira precoce.

Pope Francis and the challenges of inter-civilization diplomacy

Abstract This article addresses the role of Pope Francis in the interfaith and inter-civilization dialogue of the Holy See. Specifically, it analyses the main aspects of diplomatic relations between the Holy See and Russia, China, Islamic countries and Israel, and provides perspectives on the inter-civilization diplomacy of the Holy See during the current pontificate.

Pseudoscorpiões foréticos de Stenodontes spinibarbis (Lin., 1758) (Coleoptera) e redescrição de Lechytia chthoniiformis (Balzan, 1890) (Pseudoscorpiones, Chthoniidae) da Ilha de Maracá - Roraima.

Em excursão à ilha de Maracã, Estação Ecológica da Secretaria Especial do Meio Ambiente, Roraima, Brasil, de 16 a 22/3/1988, foram coletados com isca luminosa (luz mista de mercúrio), seis exemplares de Stenodontes spinibarbis (Lin., 1758). Quatro desses coléopteros carregavam Pseudoscorpiões de três espécies: Lechutia chthoniiformis (Balzan, 1980), Neocheiridium carticum (Balzan,1890) e Lustrochernes intermedius (Balzan, 1891). As duas primeiras espécies são assinaladas agora na Amazônia e pela primeira vez em forésia. A última, já registrada para a região Amazônica, ainda não tinha sido encontrada em forésia. Fornecem-se dados sobre estes exemplares e redescreve-se Lechytia chthoniiformis.

Brasergasilus guaporensis sp. n. (COPEPODA: ERGASILIDAE) DAS BRÂNQUIAS DE Leporinus fasciatus (BLOCH, 1890) (CHARACIFORMES: ANOSTOMIDAE) DA AMAZÔNIA BRASILEIRA

Brasergasilus guaporensissp. n. (Copepoda, Poecilostomatoida, Ergasilidae) é proposta. Os espécimens foram coletados dos filamentos branquiais de Leporinus fasciatus(BLOCH, 1890) do Rio Guaporé, próximo a Pimenteiras, Rondônia, Brasil. A nova espécie difere das outras conhecidas do gênero no formato da garra da antena e na presença de ornamentações no somito genital duplo e abdômen.

FOOD CONCENTRATION AND TEMPERATURE EFFECTS ON LIFE CYCLE CHARACTERISTICS OF TROPICAL CLADOCERA (Daphnia gessneri Herbst, Diaphanosoma sarsi Richard, Moina reticulata (Daday)): I. DEVELOPMENT TIME

The effects of food concentration and temperature on embryonic and postem-bryonic duration of three tropical species, Daphnia gessneri(1.5mm), Diaphanosoma sarsi(1.2mm) and Moina reticulata(0.8mm), were investigated as part of life cycle studies which included growth, body size and reproduction. These are the very first experimental studies undertaken on these species. The long-term growth experiments were performed under controlled laboratory conditions at all combinations of temperature (22"C, 27"C and 32"C) and constant food concentration (0.03, 0.05, 0.10, 0.25, 0.50 and 1.00 mgC/L) of the unicellular green alga Scenedesmus acutus.Animals were examined twice daily throughout their life cycle from the neonate to third adult instar. In all three species, temperature exerted the most powerful influence on embryonic duration but there was also a smaller food effect. In D. gessneri,postembry-onic durations remained more or less the same at food levels 0.25 mgC/L but were influenced by temperature. At food concentrations of 0.1 mgC/L or lower, postembryonic durations became increasingly prolonged, particularly at high temperatures. This threshold concentration is affected by temperature: in D. gessneri,it was 0.1 mgC/L at 22oC and 27oC but higher at 32oC (between 0.25 and 0.50 mgC/L). At the same temperature of 27oC, the food threshold level varied between species: it was higher (0.25 mgC/L) for D. sarsiand lower (0.05 mgC/L) for M. reticulatacompared with D. gessneri(0.1 mgC/L). In both embryonic and postembryonic durations there is a body size effect as the absolute durations were longest in the largest species and shortest in the smallest species In all three species, prolongation of postembryonic duration at combinations of high temperature and lowered food levels was accompanied by increased number of juvenile instars.

Contribuição para o conhecimento da Brassolis sophorae (Linnaeus, 1758), B. astyra Godart, 1821 (Lepid. - Brassolidae) e de seus inimigos naturais

Êste trabalho tem por objetivo contribuir para o conhecimento da Brassolis astyra God. e B. sophorae (L.), espécies muito nocivas ao coqueiro da Bahia (Cocos nucifera L.), carnaubera (Copernicia cerifera Mart.) e outras Palmáceas. Contém a sinonímia, resumo da bibliografia e a distribuição geográfica das duas espécies. Contém, além de dados biológicos, importância econômica e a natureza dos estragos causados pelos insetos, a lista das plantas hospedeiras. Apontam-se medidas de combate que incluem medidas culturais, artificiais, química, biológicas, inclusive a manutenção de parasitas. Trata também de todos os insetos parasitas das duas espécies de Brassolis. Os autores limitaram-se a dar a sinonímia, distribuição geográfica, resumo da literatura e lista dos insetos hospedeiros dos parasitas que não foram vistos. Dos parasitas obtidos pelos autores, dão-se também algumas notas biológicas e sistemáticas.

Ueber die pygidialdruese von enhydrus sulcatus (Wied., 1821) (Coleoptera, Gyrinidae)

As glândulas pigidiais, pares, de enhydrus sulcatus abrem-se, em cada lado, na região pleural do 8º segmento abdominal. A glândula possui um ducto excretor. Sua continuação apical forma um volumoso reservatório dilatável, revestido por um retículo muscular que espreme a secreção. Entre estas duas partes, encontra-se uma válvula, para regular a passagem das secreções, caraterisada por uma estrutura cuticular especial. Na região inicial do reservatório estende-se uma placa glandular. Antes da válvula nasce um tubo glandular composto de um canal central e divertículos laterais. As células da placa glandular produzem uma substância aquosa, possuindo sòmente poucos componentes orgãnicos e que consideramos como sendo o veículo das secreções oleosas do tubo glandular. As células glandulares possuem um aparêlho excretor intra-celular, denominado, por outros autores, como "Binnenblase" (vesícula interna), enquanto que nós o consideramos como sendo um verdadeiro rabdório. O fino tubo cuticular, que penetra neste complexo rabdorial, formando a parte inicial do tubo excretor, representa o verdadeiro pólo apical da célula glandular.
