The tale of a Trojan horse or the quest for market access? China and the World Trade Organization

In 2001, China finally joined the WTO. The accession of China was looked forward to by many WTO members and China itself. However, observers had some fears that the Chinese accession would prove to be a Trojan horse, disrupting the working of the WTO. This paper looks into the Chinese accession and its involvement in the WTO Dispute Settlement and argues that these fears seem so far to be unfounded.

Book-tax differences e gerenciamento de resultados no mercado de ações do Brasil

Este estudo verifica a relação entre book-tax differences (BTD) e gerenciamento de resultado em companhias listadas na BM&FBovespa no período de 2005 a 2009. Metodologicamente, foram empregadas duas abordagens: (i) distribuição de frequências e (ii) accruals discricionários - Modelo Jones Modificado. Os achados indicam uma relação diretamente proporcional entre a BTD e os accruals discricionários. Foram identificadas evidências de que as entidades preponderantemente gerenciam seus resultados na mesma direção do sinal observado da BTD, além de buscarem apresentar o montante de BTD em nível e em variação em torno do ponto zero e desta forma evitar sinalizar baixa qualidade do lucro. Adicionalmente, foram encontradas evidências de que o tamanho da firma e a adoção do regime tributário de transição estão relacionados de forma inversamente proporcional ao nível dos accruals discricionários.

Trade marketing no setor de lojas de conveniência

O estudo objetiva descrever as motivações para a adoção do trade marketing no setor de lojas de conveniência, bem como suas atribuições e posição na estrutura organizacional. Utilizou-se o estudo de casos múltiplos para investigar as motivações e práticas de quatro redes de lojas de conveniência, além de cinco fabricantes indicados pelas redes pesquisadas. Constatou-se que a existência de uma área formal de trade marketing não é condição suficiente para garantir a colaboração entre os fabricantes e os varejistas de lojas de conveniência. As ações de trade marketing são desenvolvidas e negociadas com o franqueador, todavia sua execução ocorre na instância do franqueado. Trata-se, portanto, de uma relação tripartite (tríade) composta por fabricante, franqueador das lojas de conveniência e seus franqueados.

São feitas considerações sobre os conceitos de competitividade, impacto e internacionalidade, atualmente preconizados para a avaliação dos periódicos científicos do Brasil. Discute-se a validade de tais critérios frente à realidade da ciência de interesse imediato para o Terceiro Mundo, em geral, e para o Brasil, em particular.

Book citations: influence of epidemiologic thought in the academic community

Whilst their 'death' has often been certified, books remain highly important to most professions and academic disciplines. Analyses of citations received by epidemiologic texts may complement other views on epidemiology. The objective was to assess the number of citations received by some books of epidemiology and public health, as a first step towards studying the influence of epidemiological thought and thinking in academia. For this purpose, Institute for Scientific Information/ Thomson Scientific - Web of Science/ Web of Knowledgedatabase was consulted, in May 2006. The book by Rothman & Greenland appeared to have received the highest number of citations overall (over 8,000) and per year. The books by Kleinbaum et al, and by Breslow & Day received around 5,000 citations. In terms of citations per year the book by Sackett et al ranks 3rd, and the one by Rose, 4th of those included in this preliminary study. Other books which were influential in the classrooms collected comparatively less citations. Results offer a rich picture of the academic influences and trends of epidemiologic methods and reasoning on public health, clinical medicine and the other health, life and social sciences. They may contribute to assess epidemiologists' efforts to demarcate epidemiology and to assert epistemic authority, and to analyze some historical influences of economic, social and political forces on epidemiological research.

Free-trade agreements: challenges for global health

In this study new free-trade agreements are discussed, which are based on the breaking down of tariff and technical barriers and normally exclude most of the poorest countries in the world. Considering the current context of economic globalization and its health impacts, seven controversial points of these treaties and their possible implications for global public health are presented, mainly regarding health equity and other health determinants. Finally, this research proposes a greater social and health professionals participation in the formulation and discussion of these treaties, and a deeper insertion of Brazil in this important international agenda.
