We present a new binuclear complex, Fe2III(BBPMP)(OH)(O2 P(OPh)2) ClO4.CH3OH, 3, where BBPMP is the anion of 2,6-bis(2-hydroxybenzyl)(2-pyridylmethyl) aminomethyl-4-methylphenol, as a suitable model for the chromophoric site of purple acid phosphatases coordinated to phosphate. The complex was obtained by the reaction of complex 2, Fe2III(BBPMP)(O2P(OPh) 2)2 ClO4.H2O, in CH3CN with one equivalent of triethylamine. Based on the chromophoric properties of the model complex, lmax = 560 nm/ e = 4480 M-1 cm-1/Fe2 compared to the enzyme coordinated to phosphate, we can speculate about a possible mechanism of fixing this oxyanion by the oxidized form of the enzymes.

The reactions of four new unsymmetrical N,O-donor ligands, {H2BBPETEN= [N-(2-hydroxybenzyl) - N,N' - bis(2 methylpyridyl) -N'-(hydroxyethyl) ethylenodiamine], H3BPETEN=[N,N'- bis(2-hydroxybenzyl) -N- (2-methylpyridyl) -N'- (hydroxyethyl) ethylenodiamine], HTPETEN=[N,N,N'- tris(2-methylpyridyl) -N'- (hydroxyethyl) ethylenodiamine] and H3BIMETEN=[N,N'-(2-hydroxybenzyl)-N-(1-methylimidazol-2-il-methyl)-N'- (hydroxyethyl)ethylenodiamine]}, with Cu(II) salts afforded the following mononuclear compounds: [CuII(HBBPETEN)]ClO4, [CuII(H2BPETEN)]ClO4 , [CuII(HTPETEN)](PF6)2 and [CuII(H2BIMETEN)]ClO4 . All were characterized by EPR, electronic spectroscopy and electrochemistry. The four copper (II) compounds showed interesting electrochemistry properties. All presented an anodic wave that can be attributed to the Cu (I) oxide formation at the electrode surface, or to a Cu0 sediment at the same surface or yet, to Cu(I) -> Cu(II) oxidation process with coupled chemistry reaction, due to their irreversibility. Two of the complexes are described as interesting synthetic models for the active site of the metalloenzyme galactose oxidase.

This study was performed to establish the correlation between the growth conditions and essential oil composition of Hyptis suaveolens from Alfenas (MG), Brazil. The plants were grown in a greenhouse, four treatments were used and they were harvested at two different periods of time (60 and 135-day-old plants). The essential oil composition was determined by GC-MS analysis. The terpenes spathulenol, globulol, dehydroabietol, a-cadinol and beta-phellandrene were the major constituents found in the essential oil. Oxygenated sesquiterpenes represented the main group of constituents in most of the treatments. The major changes in the essential oil composition were found in 135-day-old plants grown under NPK deficiency. We also identified three groups of volatile components that have not been previously described in H suaveolens.

Ilex paraguariensis is a native plant in Southern Brazil, whose leaves are utilized in beverages such as chimarrão and tererê. This study investigated variations of total methylxanthines in leaves from two Ilex populations collected at one-month intervals over the course of one year. The levels varied from 1.92 to 10.37 mg/g (Ijuí) and 1.77 to 9.17 mg/g (Santa Maria). Statistical analysis indicated a significative variation in the contents of all samples analysed, confirming seasonal fluctuations. These results show that the period of harvest might decisively influence the organoleptic characteristics of raw material used in industry and therefore in commercial products.

Conventional stationary lead acid batteries positive tubular plates have a specific capacity of about 120 Ah/kg. This value represents an active material utilization coefficient of 50%. The production of these plates includes some initial processes to generate the active PbO2 from a precursor material. In the present work it will be presented a proper and novel methodology to assemble tubular plates directely with nanometric powder of PbO2 particles. The utilization coefficient of these plates was about 80%, and they were able to endure more than 130 severe duty cycles. This high utilization coefficient is a higly desirable feature for electric vehicles batteries.

UDP-N-acetylglucosamine-enolpyruvyl transferase (MurA) catalyzes the reaction between phosphoenol pyruvate and UDP-N-acetylglucosamine. We present a theoretical approach using the semiempirical PM6 method for defining protonation state of three active site residues, K22, H125, and K160. Prior comparison with neutron diffraction data showed that PM6 accurately predicted protonation states of active site residues of b-trypsin and D-xylose isomerase. Using the same methodology with MurA crystallographic data, we conclude that when reaction intermediate is located at the active site, H125 and K22 are in protonated form and K160 in neutral form.

This work shows the influence of several reactional parameters for obtaining graphene through successive steps of oxidation and exfoliation of bulk graphite (resulting in graphene oxide), followed by chemical reduction. The results showed that changes in temperature, reaction time, reducing agent and source of primary graphite lead to different surface compositions and stability in dispersion of graphene oxide. Also, the use of different reducing agents promoted different degrees of restoration of C=C bonds in the bidimensional structure of graphene.
