This paper presents a science metric study of parasites of fish farming in Brazil, including a significant review of the literature. The methodology used was based on researching articles in three different databases, carried out on May 2012: ISI (Institute for Scientific Information), SciELO (Scientific Electronic Library Online), and Google Academic. The number of articles on fish parasites is mounting (currently over 110), having much increased since 1995. However, the quantity is still low compared with the amount of papers on parasites of fish from natural environments. In Brazil, the farmed fish that have been studied the most are pacu, tilapia and tambaqui. Monogeneans represent the most prevalent group, followed by protozoa and crustaceans. The regions most researched were the southeast and south, making up 84% of the total literature. The main issue addressed in articles was pathology, followed by treatment and record. In conclusion, the treatment of parasitic diseases of farmed fish in Brazil is still incipient, highlighting the importance and usefulness of management practices to prevent the occurrence of health problems.

As condições climáticas, no momento da aplicação, determinam em grande parte a eficácia de herbicidas pós-emergentes. Com o objetivo de avaliar a influência das condições climáticas sobre a eficácia de diferentes herbicidas, aplicados na pós-emergência da cultura de trigo, para o controle de Raphanus raphanistrum (nabiça), foi conduzido um experimento em condições de campo, na Estação Experimental da Fundação ABC, município de Tibagi-PR, na safra de 2002. A cultura de trigo foi instalada em sistema de plantio direto, utilizando o cultivar OR1. O delineamento experimental adotado foi o de blocos ao acaso em esquema fatorial 5 x 4 (cinco herbicidas e quatro horários de aplicação), em quatro repetições. Os herbicidas utilizados foram, em g de i.a. ha-1: metsulfuron-methyl (3,6), iodosulfuron-methyl (5,0), metribuzin (144,0), 2,4-D amina (1005,0) e 2,4-D éster (400,0); os horários de aplicação durante o dia foram 7h, 10h30, 13h30 e 17h45. A aplicação dos tratamentos herbicidas foi feita com a cultura do trigo em pleno perfilhamento, e com uma infestação de 288 pl m-2 de nabiça, que possuíam em média cinco a sete folhas. As características avaliadas foram eficácia de controle da nabiça e porcentagem de fitotoxicidade na cultura aos 8, 16, 22 e 30 dias após aplicação dos tratamentos (DAA). Os dados obtidos foram submetidos à análise de variância pelo teste F no programa SAS, sendo as médias comparadas pelo teste de LSD de Fishes a 5% de probabilidade. Houve interação entre os herbicidas e os horários de aplicação em relação ao controle de nabiça. Metribuzin e iodosulfuron-methyl foram os herbicidas menos influenciados pelas condições climáticas nos diferentes horários para o controle de nabiça. O metribuzin foi mais eficiente no seu controle, mas evidenciou sintomas de fitotoxicidade que desapareceram aos 30 DAA. As condições climáticas que ocorreram para os diferentes horários de aplicação influenciaram o desempenho dos herbicidas. O metsulfuron-methyl, o 2,4-D amina e o 2,4-D éster apresentaram grandes diferenças de controle conforme o horário de aplicação, sendo os horários das 7h00 e 17h45 os que proporcionaram menor controle quando comparados aos horários das 10h30 e 13h30. Esses resultados evidenciam a importância das condições climáticas no momento das aplicações de defensivos agrícolas no inverno, na cultura de trigo.

In view of the importance of the intestine in the osmoregulation of freshwater fishes, we determined the effects of oxytocin, urotensin II (UII), and aldosterone added to the serosal side of the isolated posterior intestine of the freshwater-adapted teleost Anguilla anguilla on electrophysiological parameters. Oxytocin decreased the short-circuit current (SCC) and transepithelial potential difference (TPD) at concentrations of 1 and 10 mU/ml (to 50% and 42% of control values, respectively), but did not alter these parameters at a concentration of 0.1 mU/ml. UII reduced SCC and TPD at concentrations of 10 nM, 50 nM and 100 nM (to 85% of control values), but increased these parameters at the concentration of 500 nM (to 115% of control values). Aldosterone did not alter SCC or TPD at the concentrations tested (10 nM and 100 nM). Oxytocin may open Na+ channels in the apical membrane, allowing the flow of Na+ to the serosa, reducing SCC and TPD. Should this hypothesis be correct, oxytocin would be important for freshwater adaptation, since it would increase Na+ absorption. The reduction of SCC and TPD in the posterior intestine of A. anguilla induced by UII is evidence that this neurohormone is also important for freshwater adaptation in teleosts. Aldosterone did not show this effect probably due to the lack of receptors in this organ

Fish and amphibians utilise a suction/force pump to ventilate gills or lungs, with the respiratory muscles innervated by cranial nerves, while reptiles have a thoracic, aspiratory pump innervated by spinal nerves. However, fish can recruit a hypobranchial pump for active jaw occlusion during hypoxia, using feeding muscles innervated by anterior spinal nerves. This same pump is used to ventilate the air-breathing organ in air-breathing fishes. Some reptiles retain a buccal force pump for use during hypoxia or exercise. All vertebrates have respiratory rhythm generators (RRG) located in the brainstem. In cyclostomes and possibly jawed fishes, this may comprise elements of the trigeminal nucleus, though in the latter group RRG neurons have been located in the reticular formation. In air-breathing fishes and amphibians, there may be separate RRG for gill and lung ventilation. There is some evidence for multiple RRG in reptiles. Both amphibians and reptiles show episodic breathing patterns that may be centrally generated, though they do respond to changes in oxygen supply. Fish and larval amphibians have chemoreceptors sensitive to oxygen partial pressure located on the gills. Hypoxia induces increased ventilation and a reflex bradycardia and may trigger aquatic surface respiration or air-breathing, though these latter activities also respond to behavioural cues. Adult amphibians and reptiles have peripheral chemoreceptors located on the carotid arteries and central chemoreceptors sensitive to blood carbon dioxide levels. Lung perfusion may be regulated by cardiac shunting and lung ventilation stimulates lung stretch receptors.

Control of the heart rate and cardiorespiratory interactions (CRI) is predominantly parasympathetic in all jawed vertebrates, with the sympathetic nervous system having some influence in tetrapods. Respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) has been described as a solely mammalian phenomenon but respiration-related beat-to-beat control of the heart has been described in fish and reptiles. Though they are both important, the relative roles of feed-forward central control and peripheral reflexes in generating CRI vary between groups of fishes and probably between other vertebrates. CRI may relate to two locations for the vagal preganglionic neurons (VPN) and in particular cardiac VPN in the brainstem. This has been described in representatives from all vertebrate groups, though the proportion in each location is variable. Air-breathing fishes, amphibians and reptiles breathe discontinuously and the onset of a bout of breathing is characteristically accompanied by an immediate increase in heart rate plus, in the latter two groups, a left-right shunting of blood through the pulmonary circuit. Both the increase in heart rate and opening of a sphincter on the pulmonary artery are due to withdrawal of vagal tone. An increase in heart rate following a meal in snakes is related to withdrawal of vagal tone plus a non-adrenergic-non-cholinergic effect that may be due to humoral factors released by the gut. Histamine is one candidate for this role.

Due to the adverse effects of the cholesterol oxidation products for the human health, the search of the occurrence and the quantification of these compounds in foods are considered of great importance. In this paper the effect of grilling in hake and sardine on cholesterol oxides formation and fatty acids alterations was investigated. The main fatty acids determined in both fishes were docosahexaenoic (DHA), oleic, eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and palmitoleic. The total lipids, fatty acids and cholesterol contents were decreased significantly (p < 0.02) after thermal treatment, with simultaneous increase of the cholesterol oxides contents. The cholesterol oxides determined in both species in the present study were: 19-hydroxycholesterol, 24(S)-hydroxycholesterol, 22(S) hydroxycholesterol, 25-hydroxycholesterol, 25(R)-hydroxycholesterol and 7-ketocolesterol. Besides the presence of the cholesterol oxides in raw fishes, there were a greater number of products resulting from the oxidation of cholesterol side chain, a fact rarely observed in foods.

The effects of boiling, frying, and roasting methods on nutrients and properties some of marine fishes were studies. AOAC official methods were used for the analyses of the samples. Frying reduced the protein content of Nemipterus japonicas, while roasting reduced the protein content of Carangoides malabaricus and Saurida undosquamis. Fresh and fried C. malabaricus had 71.2% and 57.05% protein content, respectively, while N. japonicas had 57.39% and 47.51%, respectively. The highest oil content in C.malabaricus was 16.80%, followed by N.japonicus 12.80%; while the lowest oil content in S.undosquamis was 5.88%. N.japonicusis protein content reduced with frying. Some cooking methods used in the processing can have an effect on of fish nutrient composition. The texture of fried and boiled fish fillets significantly differ from that of the roasted fillets (p<0.05).
