The synthesis of ZSM-5 zeolite was studied by three synthesis methods: standard synthesis, three day synthesis and synthesis employing clays (kaolin and montmorillonite). The raw materials and prepared materials were characterized by Chemical Analysis by X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). The results show that it is possible to synthesized ZSM-5 zeolite using clays as raw materials. Kaolin gives phases of higher crystalinity than montmorillonite.

In an attempt to reduce toxicity and widen the spectrum of activity of cisplatin and its analogues, much attention has been focused on designing new platinum complexes. This work reports the synthesis and characterization of novel compounds of the platinum (II) and platinum (IV) containing 2-furoic hydrazide acid and iodide as ligands. Although the prepared compounds do not present the classical structure of biologically active platinum analogues, they could be potentially active or useful as precursors to prepare antitumor platinum complexes. The reported compounds were characterized by ¹H NMR, 13C NMR, 195Pt NMR, IR and elemental analyses.

In this work, aqueous suspensions of aluminas with different particle sizes were evaluated. The effect of pH on the electrosteric stabilization using PMAA-NH4 (ammonium polymethacrylate) as deflocculant was studied. The amount of deflocculant was optimized and rheologic properties were determined at four different pH values. Sedimentation was also evaluated. For suspensions with pH 4, an electrostatic mechanism of stabilization was observed, probably due to a flat adsorption of PMMA- on the alumina surface, leading to a small efficiency in relation to steric stabilization. For a suspension with pH 12, the steric mechanism of stabilization prevails. Suspensions with pH 7 and 9 present a higher flocculation degree. In relation to particle size, A-1000 samples present a smaller particle size, leading to a smaller interparticle distance (IPS), making stabilization more difficult.

LaNiO3 perovskite was modified by partial substitution of nickel by cobalt in order to increase the stability and resistance to carbon deposition during the methane CO2 reforming. The results showed that a suitable combination of precipitation and calcination steps resulted in oxides with the desired structure and with important properties for application in heterogeneous catalysis. The partial substitution of Ni by Co resulted in lower rates of conversion of both the reactants, but the catalyst stability was highly increased. The LaNi0.3Co0.7O3 catalyst, calcined at 800 ºC, was the most active under the reaction conditions.

The principal techniques for the synthesis of liquid crystalline block copolymers are reviewed. The syntheses are done by living/controlled free radical chain polymerization. The copolymers display an amorphous continuous phase and a discontinuous liquid crystalline phase (LC). The presence of oxypropylenic segments disturbs the range of mesophase transitions at lower temperatures. This behavior is not observed when styrenic segments are employed and suggests that the liquid crystalline behavior can be modified in block copolymers to show mesophases at higher and lower temperatures according to the flexibility of the chain segment that is present.

There has been a considerable interest in coordination complexes of molecular nitrogen (N2), partly due to a possible relationship between such complexes and the nitrogen activation process in nature. The present paper describes the synthesis and infrared spectroscopic characterization of an iron-nitrogen derivative with ethylenediamine-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetate (edta) as an experiment for an undergraduate course. The topics covered here include synthesis, reactivity and spectroscopy.

The present work describes the use of piperonal, a derivative of the secondary metabolite safrole, for the synthesis of new 5,6-methylenedioxysubstituted indole carboxylic acids structurally related to the indol-3-yl-acetic acid (AIA, I). The route comprises six steps beginning with piperonal with an overall yield of 19%. Compound IX was tested towards its plant growth regulator properties in bioassays specific for auxine activity. The in vitro assays were performed in a germination chamber and were of two types: root growth in germinated seeds of Lactuca sativa, Cucumbis sativus and Raphanus sativus and peciole biotest using Phaseolus vulgaris.

Nb-substituted goethites have been prepared and characterized by Mössbauer spectroscopy, XRD, SEM and BET surface area measurements. Mössbauer and XRD analyses suggested that Nb replaces Fe3+ in the structure with duplet formation. The insertion of Nb into the goethite structure caused a significant increase in the BET surface area of the material. The prepared alpha-Fe1-xNb xOOH was investigated for the H2O2 decomposition to O2 and for the Fenton reaction to oxidize the dye methylene blue. It was observed that the introduction of Nb in to goethite produced a strong increase in the activity of oxidation of the dye contaminant by H2O2.

Lipases from different sources were immobilized in sodium caseinate/glycerol film and used in the esterification reactions of aliphatic acids with alcohols in the presence of organic solvents. Lipases from Pseudomonas sp and Rhizopus oryzae were selected and the influence of several parameters was analyzed, including: lipase loading, organic solvent polarity, reaction temperature, chain length of alcohol and acid and enzyme/support reuse. For comparison, free enzymes were used under similar experimental conditions.

We report herein the synthesis of some beta-D-galactopyranosylamine and beta-lactosylamine amides and sulfonamides. The interactions of these compounds with lectins from the seeds of Erythrina cristagalli (LEC) and Ricinus communis (RCA120) were evaluated in a hemagglutination inhibitory activity assay. D-Galactose and lactose were used as reference compounds. The beta-lactosylamine amides and sulfonamides were nearly as active as lactose in inhibiting LEC mediated hemagglutination and were less active against RCA120 agglutinin. The beta-D-galactopyranosylamine amides and sulfonamides were, with one exception, considerably less active than D-galactose in the assay with both lectins.

The contextualized understanding of concepts in Chemistry by students from other areas is a challenging task. In this experiment, the synthesis of biodiesel is done by base catalyzed transesterification of refined soy oil with methanol at room temperature and common glassware found in any chemistry laboratory. The proposal permits introducing several concepts, such as that of emulsion, viscosity and catalysis to illustrate an activity based on an actual problem. In this didactic approach, some common problems of biodiesel production, such as soap formation and phase separation, are introduced into the procedure in order to raise questions and motivate the students to participate in the experimental work and stimulate reflections about critical aspects of biodiesel production. This experiment was carried out in the first semester of 2006, in experimental general chemistry taken by physics and agricultural, civil and chemical engineering students of UNICAMP.

A sample of hydroxyapatite was synthesized and its crystalline structure was analyzed by X-ray diffraction by means of the Rietveld method. Two functions were used to fit the peak profiles, modified Voigt (TCHZ) and Pearson VII. The occupational factors and lattice parameters obtained by both models show that the sample does not contain relevant cationic substitutions. The interatomic distances from Ca1 to oxygens O1, O2 and O3 were adequate for a pure hydroxyapatite without defect at site Ca1. Besides, the use of multiple lines in planes (300) and (002) associated with the model Pearson VII resulted in good agreement with the TCHZ model with respect to the size-strain effectswith an ellipsoidal shape of crystallites. In conclusion, the procedures adopted in the synthesis of hydroxyapatite produced a pure and crystalline material. The experimental results of transmission electron microscopy confirmed the predicted shape of crystals.

We report the synthesis of amino(2-hydroxy-2-(4-methoxyphenyl)ethylamino)methaniminium (14) as a direct precursor of a tubastrine derivative (3-dehydroxy-4-methoxytubastrine). The synthetic steps involved functional group interconversions starting from 1-(4-methoxyphenyl)ethanone to obtain the guanidine-protected derivative 13. Tentative dehydration of 13 with SiOH-adsorbed CuSO4 resulted in guanidine deprotection only. This was an unexpected result, since there are no reports of CuSO4.SiOH as Boc-deprotecting of guanidines. The product 14 was obtained in five steps and 5.4 % overall yield, and constitutes a direct precursor of 3-dehydroxy-4-methoxytubastrine.

Aragonite is a metastable polymorph of calcium carbonate. The calcareous exoskeletons of some organisms like corals or molluscs consist essentially of aragonite. The questions of how, and why these organisms prefer the thermodynamically unstable aragonite for the construction of their hard shells are discussed. The importance of the biomineralization process for the development of new materials is outlined. In the experimental part, a very simple synthesis of polycrystalline aragonite is performed, using carbonated mineral water available at the market. The synthesized aragonite is easily identified by its infrared spectrum.
