The root exudates produced by sorghum contain a biologically active constituent known as sorgoleone. The behavior of sorgoleone in a Red-Yellow Latosol was studied. The sorption model of sorgoleone in soil was better adjusted to the Freundlich equation, through the coefficients Kf (capacity of sorption) and 1/n (linearity of the isotherm). The persistence of sorgoleone in soil and its possible degradation were also evaluated by monitoring their residues in the soil along the time. Recovery rate of sorgoleone from the soil reached 93% after 24h. It was verified that sorgoleone is strongly sorbed in the soil and its half-life is 10 days, under the experimental conditions. The presence of sorgoleone or its metabolites was not detected in the soil after 60 days.

Leaking of diesel oil from gas stations is frequent in Brazil. The presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are highly toxic is an indication of contamination by heavy hydrocarbons from diesel oil. Here were present the determination of the distribution coefficient (Kd) of benzo(a)pyrene (the most carcinogenic of the PAHs) in tropical soils using the sorption isotherm model. The sorption curves acquired for benzo(a)pyrene were of the S-type, probably due to the water/methanol experimental conditions. The sorption curves allowed calculation of the distribution coefficient (Kd). The experimental Kd values were lower than those calculated from literature Koc values (partition coefficient normalized by organic carbon), due mainly to the cosolvency effect and the percentage of organic matter and clay in soil.

Sulfur emission in coal power generation is a matter of great environmental concern and limestone sorbents are widely used for reducing such emissions. Thermogravimetry was applied to determine the effects of the type of limestone (calcite and dolomite), particle size (530 and 650 µm) and atmosphere (air and nitrogen) on the kinetics of SO2 sorption by limestone. Isothermal experiments were performed for different temperatures (650 to 950 ºC), at local atmospheric pressure. The apparent activation energies, as indicated by the slope of the Arrhenius plot, resulted between 3.03 and 4.45 kJ mol-1 for the calcite, and 11.24 kJ mol-1 for the dolomite.

Xanthan is a polysaccharide synthesized by Xanthomonas bacteria and of extreme commercial importance as a microbial polysaccharide. The aim of this work was to produce xanthan using mozzarella cheese whey as substrate, by different isolates natives the Xanthomonas. The alternative medium for production was milk whey, urea and K2HPO4. The xanthan maximum productivity was 21.91 g L-1. Analysis of apparent viscosity was made in solutions of gum at 0.5-2.0%, 25-65 ºC with shear rate of 25-1000 s-1.The maximum viscosity found was 57.30 mPa.s. The isolates demonstrate capacity to degrade the lactose and to produce xanthan, being constituted an alternative for the industrial production.

Valproic acid (VA) is a drug used to control seizures in several epileptic conditions. In VA pharmacotherapy, therapeutic drug monitoring is recommended to obtain adequate seizure control and avoid toxicity. The aim of this study was to validate a method for the determination of valproic acid in serum, employing high performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection (HPLC-DAD), after derivatization with phenacyl bromide. The calibration curve (y=0.0133x-0.0025) presented good linearity with r²=0.9999. Accuracy (101-115%), intra-assay precision (4.53-8.15%) and inter-assay precision (3.15-6.77%) were acceptable. The quantification limit was 2.0 µg/mL. The method presented similar results to enzyme immunoassay.

Little information is available on the behavior of thiamethoxam in soils, whereas many studies show the effect of phosphate and vinasse in soils in Brazil. This study evaluated the sorption, desorption and retention of thiamethoxam in vinasse- and phosphate-amended samples of a dystrophic Red-Yellow Latosol (LVAd) and a distroferric Red Latosol (LVdf). The LVAd presented higher sorption of thiamethoxam. Phosphate did not affect the sorption or retention and vinasse increased the interaction of the compound with the soil particles, reducing desorption to the soil solution.

This work presents a detailed study about the sorption of crystal violet (CV) cationic dye onto polyether type polyurethane foam (PUF). The sorption process was based on the formation of an ionic-pair between cationic dye and dodecylsulfate anion (SDS), which presented high affinity by PUF. Set-up employed in the study was built up by adjusting a 200 mg cylinder of PUF to the arm of an overhead stirrer. The system was characterized in relation to equilibrium and kinetic aspects and it was modeled by employing Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. Obtained results showed that the ratio between SDS and MB concentrations played an important role on the sorption process. According to results found it was possible to retain up to 3.4 mg of dye from 200 mL of a 5.0 x 10-5 mol L-1 CV solution containing 1.25 x 10-4 mol L-1 SDS, which represented a removal efficiency of around 92%.

The sorption of thiamethoxam in a Brazilian Oxisol was determined in soil samples with and without organic matter for two different dephs (0-0.1 and 0.4-0.7 m). The results indicated a predominant sorption of thiamethoxam on soil without organic matter. The following Kd values of 4.25 mL g-1 (0-0.1 m, r² = 0.8534) and 5.30 mL g-1 (0.4-0.7 m, r² = 0.9884) and Kf values, 7.65 mL g-1 (0-0.1 m, r² = 0.9623) and 7.72 mL g-1 (0.4-0.7 m, r² = 0.9775) were obtained. Those sorption coefficient values indicated a small interaction between thiamethoxam for both original soil and soil without organic matter.

Soil organic matter is the main sorptive soil compartment for atrazine in soils, followed in a minor scale by the inorganic fraction. In this study, the soil organic matter quality and atrazine sorption were investigated in four different soil types. The pedogenic environment affected the humification and therefore the chemical composition of the organic matter. The organic matter contribution to atrazine sorption was larger (60-83%) than that of the inorganic fraction. The organic matter capacity in retaining the herbicide was favoured by a higher decomposition degree and a smaller carboxylic substitution of the aliphatic chains.

Poly (3-hydroxybutyrate) (P(3HB)) is a biopolymer, completely biodegradable, which has similar properties to fuel-based polymers. However to make it economically competitive it is necessary the study of cheap sources of substrate. The influence of hydrolyzed rice starch supplemented with soybean oil at different temperatures (30, 35 and 40 °C) was studied in the production of P(3HB) by C. necator. The percentage of P(3HB) produced in the cultures at 30, 35 °C was 30, 39% and 35, 43% without and with supplementation of oil, respectively. The culture at 40 °C showed no production phase due to a possible oxygen limitation. These results demonstrate that hydrolyzed rice starch supplemented with soybean oil increases the yield of P(3HB) and temperature of 35 ºC is the most favorable for biopolymer production.

The clay minerals montmorillonite (MT) and vermiculite (VT), previously treated with Ca2+, K+ and Na+, were employed in a sorption study with herbicides. The herbicides 2,4-D, diuron, alachlor and metolachlor showed no interaction with MT and VT. On the other hand, the triazines presented a good sorption process, close to 100% for ametrine removal and near to 56 and 69% for atrazine and simazine, respectively, by MT. These results suggest that the MT specie may be a good material for triazines removal from aqueous medium and an alternative phase to preconcentration process, besides to exhibit a good selectivity.

Following application herbicides usually reach the soil and undergo several dissipation processes which determine their effects on target organisms and on the environment. This work aimed to evaluate atrazine and mesotrione sorption in Oxisols and estimate their potential impact on the environment. We observed that atrazine sorption was influenced by soil organic matter content and its hydrophobic character. Clay fraction was the main factor influencing mesotrione sorption followed in a lesser extent by soil organic matter content. In contrast to atrazine, mesotrione retention was favored by the higher carboxylic substitution in the aliphatic chains of soil organic matter. Atrazine and mesotrione were considered compounds that are likely to pose an appreciable risk of causing deleterious effects on the environment.

Agrochemicals constitute the class of products most commonly found in water resources. Their high level of concentration is due to the fact that less than 0.1% of pesticides applied to crops reach their target. The present work aims to study the sorption of clomazone herbicide (associated or not with nanoparticles). The sorption tests, performed with the 2(4) factorial design, showed that the form of herbicide is the main factor for sorption of clomazone. The application of nanoparticles as delivery system for agrochemicals is a pressing area of study and can contribute for decrease in effects of clomazone in the environment.
