OBJETIVO: avaliar os efeitos dos estrogênios conjugados eqüinos (Ece) e do raloxifeno (Ral), isoladamente ou associados, sobre o endométrio de ratas adultas. MÉTODOS: foram utilizadas 56 ratas adultas, ooforectomizadas, divididas aleatoriamente em sete grupos: GCont (controle); GEce (Ece 50 µg/kg); GEce/25 (Ece 25 µg/kg); GRal/0,75 (Ral 0,75 µg/kg); GRal/0,4 (Ral 0,4 mg/kg); GEce-Ral (50/0,75) - (Ece 50 µg/kg + Ral 0,75 mg/kg) e GEce-Ral (25/0,4) - (Ece 25 µg/kg + Ral 0,4 mg/kg). As drogas foram administradas por gavagem durante 21 dias consecutivos. Ao final da administração todos os animais foram anestesiados e fragmentos dos úteros removidos, fixados em formol a 10% e processados para inclusão em parafina. Os cortes obtidos foram corados por HE e submetidos à avaliação histomorfométrica. Foram avaliados os seguintes parâmetros: espessura do epitélio superficial, número de glândulas endometriais/mm² e número de vasos sangüíneos presentes no miométrio/mm². Os dados obtidos foram submetidos a análise estatística de ANOVA seguida pelo teste de Tukey-Kramer. RESULTADOS: nos grupos controle (Gcont) e tratados isoladamente com raloxifeno (GRal/0,75 e GRal/0,4) o endométrio mostrou-se atrófico. Já nos grupos tratados com Ece isoladamente foi observado endométrio muito desenvolvido, sendo este efeito mais acentuado no grupo que recebeu 50 µg/kg, no qual encontramos aumento da espessura do epitélio superficial e da lâmina própria e no número de glândulas endometriais e de vasos sanguíneos. Notamos também proliferação endometrial nos grupos que receberam a associação de Ece e Ral (GEce-Ral - 50/0,75) e (GEce-Ral - 25/0,4). CONCLUSÃO: o raloxifeno parece bloquear parcialmente a ação do estrogênio no endométrio de ratas adultas castradas.

This paper presents the development of a two-dimensional interactive software environment for structural analysis and optimization based on object-oriented programming using the C++ language. The main feature of the software is the effective integration of several computational tools into graphical user interfaces implemented in the Windows-98 and Windows-NT operating systems. The interfaces simplify data specification in the simulation and optimization of two-dimensional linear elastic problems. NURBS have been used in the software modules to represent geometric and graphical data. Extensions to the analysis of three-dimensional problems have been implemented and are also discussed in this paper.

The aim of this work was the identification of geographic zones suitable for the production of honeys in which pollen grains of Escallonia pulverulenta (Ruiz & Pav.) Pers. (Saxifragaceae) can be detected. The analysis of botanical origin of 240 honey samples produced between La Serena and Puerto Mont (the IV and X Administrative Regions of Chile), allowed the detection of pollen grains of E. pulverulenta in 46 Chilean honeys. The geographic distribution of the honeys studied is presented together with their affinities, through factor analysis and frequency tables. The study was based on the presence of E. pulverulenta pollen. Escallonia pulverulenta pollen percentages oscillated between 0.24% and 78.5%. Seventeen of the studied samples were designated as unifloral - i.e. samples showing more than 45% pollen of a determined plant species. Two of these corresponded to E. pulverulenta (corontillo, madroño or barraco) honeys. The remaining unifloral honeys correspond to 8 samples of Lotus uliginosus Schkuhr (birdsfoot trefoil), 2 samples of Aristotelia chilensis (Molina) Stuntz (maqui) and 1 sample of Escallonia rubra (Ruiz & Pav.) Pers. (siete camisas), Eucryphia cordifolia Cav. (ulmo or muemo), Weinmannia trichosperma Cav. (tineo), Rubus ulmifolius Schott (blackberry) and Brassica rapa L. (turnip). Honeys with different percentages of E. pulverulenta pollen - statistically analyzed through correspondence analysis - could be associated and assigned to one of three geographic types, defined on the basis of this analysis. The geographical type areas defined were the Northern Mediterranean Zone (samples from the IV Region), Central Mediterranean Zone (samples from the V to the VIII regions including two samples of unifloral Escallonia pulverulenta honey), and Southern Mediterranean Zone (samples from the IX Region).

Se ha estudiado el pelado químico y termofísico en una etapa de espárragos de la variedad Argentuil. Para el pelado químico se utilizó la Metodología de la Superficie de Respuesta, evaluando el efecto que las variables concentración del baño de NaOH (20, 40, 60 g/kg), temperatura del baño (55, 70, 85ºC) y tiempo de pelado (30, 75, 120 segundos) tienen sobre el rendimiento de la operación y la calidad del pelado. Para el pelado termofísico se estudió el efecto que el tiempo de pelado (10, 20, 30 segundos) y el tamaño del espárrago ejercen sobre las respuestas mencionadas. Se determinó que los modelos estadísticos obtenidos para el pelado químico fueron apropiados, encontrándose que la mejor calidad de pelado y más altos rendimientos se ubican para condiciones de baja concentración de NaOH, corto tiempo y alta temperatura. En el pelado termofísico el tiempo óptimo de procesamiento, para ambos tamaños de espárragos, fue de 20 segundos, para una presión de trabajo de 5,1 kg/m2.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of the chitosan addition on the quality of vacuum packaged pork sausages. A variant of the product was elaborated with 1% (w/w) of chitosan in lactic acid solution at 1% (v/v) and it was compared to a control. Sausages were mechanically stuffed and manually conformed and vacuum packaged. Sausages were stored at 4 °C and microbiological evaluations, pH measurements, texture profile analysis and sensorial evaluation were performed. The chitosan addition in the formulation of the sausages did not reduce the microbiological counts. The pH values obtained in all samples were similar, which suggests that the chitosan addition did not influence the pH values of sausages. The added chitosan did not affect significantly (p < 0.05) the results of the texture profile analysis and sensorial attributes and therefore, the overall acceptance of the sausages.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of partial nitrite replacement by chitosan on the quality of Ham Visking (a type of pork sausages). Five Ham Visking formulations were elaborated modifying the sodium nitrite (0.011; 0.016 or 0.0212%) and chitosan concentrations (0.25 or 0.5%) in the products. Sausages were stored at 4 ºC and physicochemical, microbiological, and sensorial evaluations were performed in order to estimate their shelf life. Chitosan can be used in pork sausages without affecting ensory attributes such as color although the panelists detected textural differences among the samples with chitosan, which suggests that there is some influence of deacetylation degree of chitosan on the textural behavior of sausages which still needed to be explained for a successful application of chitosan in meat products. The reduction of residual sodium nitrite did not affect the color and flavor of such products, but the use of chitosan increasedsignificantly the shelf life of sausages.

Probiotics are living microorganisms, which when administered in adequate amounts confer health benefits on the host through a beneficial influence on the intestinal microbiota related to competition and to antagonistic and immunological effects. Thus, the objective of this study was the development of effervescent products (tablets and powder) supplemented with the probiotics Lactobacillus acidophilus and Saccharomyces boulardii, and the identification of the best formulation in terms of viability of these microorganisms. The physical properties of the tablets (compressive force applied, mean weight, hardness, and friability) were assessed, and the viability of the microorganisms in the gastrointestinal tract and their stability during storage were also determined. The results show that the microorganisms remained stable and viable during the 60-day storage period in the effervescent powder. However, the results indicated that the effect of compression force affected the viability of the microorganisms during the production of the effervescent tablets.
