Fruits of five regional selections of rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum L.) were characterized to identify those with international marketing quality to promote their propagation in Mexico, improvement and conservation in germoplasm bank. The fruits were harvested in June, July, and August 2008 and, after each harvest, were assessed for shape (length/diameter), firmness, fruit weight, number of fruits per kilogram, weight and percentage of pericarp, seed and aril, total soluble solids, total sugars, vitamin C content, pH, and titratable acidity. In addition, a sensorial evaluation was carried out with 31 panelists who graded each selection for color, sweetness, and acidity. Fruits of five selections were ovoid, and with the following characteristics: firmness values from 43.7 to 51.0 N, fruit weight ranged from 22.4 to 34.7 g, registering from 28.9 to 45.0 fruits per kg; pericarp weight from 10.5 to 17.3 g (45.9 to 49.9% of the total fruit weight); total seed weight from 2.2 to 2.5 g (7.0 to 10.0%); average arils weight from 8.9 to 13.1 g (37.5 to 41.4%). The fruits had high contents of total soluble solids (17.8 to 20.4 ºBrix), total sugars (211.95 to 242.70 mg/100g in the edible portion), vitamin C (37.9 to 69.1 mg/100 g), pH 5.0, and titratable acidity of 0.20 to 0.28%. The fruits from the RT-01 and RT-05 selections had better attributes in fruit weight, total soluble solids and titratable acidity and were better accepted by the panelists. Harvest date significantly affects rambutan fruit quality; at the middle and end of the season harvested fruits had better qualitative characteristics for the marketing.

Contaminant gases in the atmosphere constitute an important problem to be solved in the world. The NOx gases produced as a consequence of engine high temperatures are deleterious to environment and human health, as they promote acid rain and can act in the same way as freons in the destruction of the ozone layer in the stratosphere. In this review, three way and selective reduction catalysts for decomposition of these contaminant gases are described. Details about conditions and problems, such as catalyst poisoning, and the search for new catalysts are shown.

This work presents zinc determination in certain medicines that contain zinc oxide and zinc undecylenate. The technique consists of a spectrophotometric micro-scale titration, where EDTA is used as titrant, and xylenol orange as an indicator, in a medium adjusted to pH = 6 with acetic acid and sodium acetate. After each added portion of EDTA, the absorbance value is measured at a selected wavelength, in order to detect the end-point of the spectrophotometric titration. The results already obtained are satisfactory and promote student's interest. An additional contribution intends to propose the use of micro-scale techniques.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the crystal structure of binary mixtures of palm kernel fat and fish oil, before and after chemical and enzymatic interesterification. The crystal structure was analyzed by polarized light microscopy. The addition of fish oil didn't change the palm kernel fat crystallization characteristics, spherullites of types A and B being observed. However, due to chemical and enzymatic interesterification, smaller crystals were obtained. There was no difference between chemical and enzymatic interesterification, probably as a function of acyl migration in discontinuous processes catalyzed by lipases.

Ozonization of theobroma oil at different applied ozone dosages was carried out with measurement of peroxide index values, oxygen percentage content and fatty acids composition. The comparison of peroxide values with percentage content of oxygen at different applied ozone dosages showed good correlation (r=0.9923). Unsaturated fatty acids and triacylglycerols decrease with ozone applied dosage due to ozone reaction with double bonds. Small amounts of oleic acid were consumed with applied ozone dosage at 35 mg/g, which demonstrated that peroxide values and oxygen content were not principally increased by the ozone attack on the double bonds, but other mechanisms could be involved in the reaction system.

The chemical composition of the volatiles of Nectandra salicina growing wild in Costa Rica was determined by capillary GC/FID and GC/MS. Thirty-seven and forty-two compounds were identified in the leaf and branch oils respectively corresponding to about 92.6 and 86.2% of the total amount of the oils. The major components of the leaf oil were: atractylone (14.6%), viridiflorene (10.1%), α-pinene (9.4%), β-caryophyllene (7.2%), α-humulene (7.0%), δ-cadinene (6.1%), β-pinene (6.0%) and germacrene D (5.8%). The major components of the branch oil were: atractylone (21.1%), germacrene D (10.7%), viridiflorene (7.9%) and 7-epi-α-selinene (5.0%). When the oils were tested on different cell lines, all the LD50 values were higher than 150 µg/mL, with values very similar for the leaf and branch oils. Low toxicity could be explained by antagonistic effects among the main compounds present in the oils.

This work describes a validation of an analytical procedure for the analysis of petroleum hydrocarbons in marine sediment samples. The proposed protocol is able to measure n-alkanes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in samples at concentrations as low as 30 ng/g, with a precision better than 15% for most of analytes. The extraction efficiency of fortified sediments varied from 65.1 to 105.6% and 59.7 to 97.8%, for n-alkanes and PAH in the ranges: C16 - C32 and fluoranthene - benzo(a)pyrene, respectively. The analytical protocol was applied to determine petroleum hydrocarbons in sediments collected from a marine coastal zone.

Ozonation of sunflower oils with genetic modification High Oleic and High Oleic-Palmitic (AO and PO respectively) and without modification, High Linoleic (AL) at different applied ozone dosages was carried out with measurement of peroxide and acidity indexes values, fatty acids composition, oxygen percentage content and antimicrobial activity. The comparison of peroxides indexes and oxygen content at different applied ozone dosages in each oil showed good correlation (r = 0,99). Higher amount of oleic acid was consumed at higher applied ozone dosage in PO oil than AO oil, which can be related to the increase of acidity index. The antimicrobial activity was better for AL and PO ozonized oils.
