Modern agriculture techniques have a great impact on crops and soil quality, especially by the increased machinery traffic and weight. Several devices have been developed for determining soil properties in the field, aimed at managing compacted areas. Penetrometry is a widely used technique; however, there are several types of penetrometers, which have different action modes that can affect the soil resistance measurement. The objective of this study was to compare the functionality of two penetrometry methods (manual and automated mode) in the field identification of compacted, highly mechanized sugarcane areas, considering the influence of soil water volumetric content (θ) on soil penetration resistance (PR). Three sugarcane fields on a Rhodic Eutrudrox were chosen, under a sequence of harvest systems: one manual harvest (1ManH), one mechanized harvest (1MH) and three mechanized harvests (3MH). The different degrees of mechanization were associated to cumulative compaction processes. An electronic penetrometer was used on PR measurements, so that the rod was introduced into the soil by hand (Manual) and by an electromechanical motor (Auto). The θ was measured in the field with a soil moisture sensor. Results showed an effect of θ on PR measurements and that regression models must be used to correct data before comparing harvesting systems. The rod introduction modes resulted in different mean PR values, where the "Manual" overestimated PR compared to the "Auto" mode at low θ.

This paper addresses the problem of multilingual digital libraries. The motivation for a such a digital library comes from the diversity of languages of the Internet users as well as the diversity of content authors, from e-book authors to writers of courseware. The basic definitions of such a system, the specifications of its functionality and the identification of the items it holds are discussed. The impact of multilinguism in each of the former aspects is presented. A case study of a multilingual digital library - in the Maxwell System in PUC-Rio - is described in the last sections. Its main characteristics are described and the current status of its digital library is shown.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of using bulk milk with different somatic cell counts (SCC) on the quality of minas frescal cheese. A randomized complete block design was used, with 3x5 factorial treatments, with three SCC levels (low, 125,000 cells mL-1; intermediate, 437,000 cells mL-1; and high, 1,053,000 cells mL-1) and five storage durations. Cheese was vacuum-packed in plastic bags and analyzed after 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30 days of storage at 4ºC. Somatic cell counts did not affect dry matter, fat, ash content, pH, free fatty acid concentrations and sensory parameters of minas frescal cheese. However, SCC in milk increased losses of protein in whey and decreased the cheese protein content. These changes did not affect the moisture-adjusted cheese yield and proteolysis during 30 days of storage. An interaction effect between SCC and time of storage was observed for firmness and sensory grades of cheeses. Results indicated that raw milk used to produce minas frescal cheese should not contain high SCC, in order to avoid lower acceptance of the product after 30 days of storage.

The objective of this research was to evaluate combinations of liquid media obtained from agro-industrial residues and by-products, with solid media prepared with mixtures of grains and their derivatives, aiming to increase the production of JAB 02 and JAB 45 isolates of Lecanicillium lecanii. Sporulation, conidial viability and process yield were evaluated as well as the production costs using the JAB 45 isolate as a model system were analyzed. The production of JAB 02 was not increased using the biphasic culture. For JAB 45, some combinations provided an increase in yield, especially cheese whey with wheat bran and wheat grain, with lower production costs. Viability was not influenced by the production method, and the combinations showed no differences in the process yield. The biphasic method is suitable for the production of L. lecanii, and proves to be an appropriate technology to use in mass production by biofactories.

In this article are described new bioactive N-acylhydrazone (NAH) derivatives, structurally designed as optimization of aryl hydrazones precursors planned by molecular hybridization of two 5-lipoxigenase inhibitors, e.g. CBS-1108 and BW-755c. The analgesic, antiedematogenic and anti-platelet aggregating profile of several isosteric compounds was investigated by using classic pharmacological assays in vivo and ex-vivo, allowing to identify new potent peripheric analgesic lead, a new anti-inflammatory and an antithrombotic agent. During this study was discovered dozen of active NAH compounds clarifying the structure-activity relationship for this series of NAH derivatives, indicating the pharmacophore character of the N-acylhydrazone functionality.

Chemically synthesized surfactants are widely used for many purposes in almost every sector of modern industry. Surface-active compounds of biological origin (biosurfactants) have been gaining attention in recent years because of some advantages such as biodegradability, low toxicity, diversity of applications and functionality under extreme conditions. Microbial biosurfactants are useful in bioremediation of water and soil, enhanced oil recovery, and in many formulations of petrochemical, chemical, pharmaceutical, food, cosmetic and textile industries. The importance of biosurfactants, their characteristics and industrial applications are discussed.

A new version of the normal coordinate analysis package NCT is presented. The upgrade was mainly devised to enable the NCT package to manipulate easily the Hessian matrix evaluated by quantum chemical calculations. Program codes were almost wholly rewritten to be more efficient with GNU Fortran77, or g77, and compiled under FreeBSD and MS-DOS with the DJGPP implementation. Three typical usages of the program package are presented by giving the related input and output files. Functionality of the programs was carefully and satisfactorily checked for some sample calculations.

In this work an analytical methodology for the determination of relevant physicochemical parameters of prato cheese is reported, using infrared spectroscopy (DRIFT) and partial least squares regression (PLS). Several multivariate models were developed, using different spectral regions and preprocessing routines. In general, good precision and accuracy was observed for all studied parameters (fat, protein, moisture, total solids, ashes and pH) with standard deviations comparable with those provided by the conventional methodologies. The implantation of this multivariate routine involves significant analytical advantages, including reduction of cost and time of analysis, minimization of human errors, and elimination of chemical residues.

Xanthan is a polysaccharide synthesized by Xanthomonas bacteria and of extreme commercial importance as a microbial polysaccharide. The aim of this work was to produce xanthan using mozzarella cheese whey as substrate, by different isolates natives the Xanthomonas. The alternative medium for production was milk whey, urea and K2HPO4. The xanthan maximum productivity was 21.91 g L-1. Analysis of apparent viscosity was made in solutions of gum at 0.5-2.0%, 25-65 ºC with shear rate of 25-1000 s-1.The maximum viscosity found was 57.30 mPa.s. The isolates demonstrate capacity to degrade the lactose and to produce xanthan, being constituted an alternative for the industrial production.

This study developed and validated a method for moisture determination in artisanal Minas cheese, using near-infrared spectroscopy and partial-least-squares. The model robustness was assured by broad sample diversity, real conditions of routine analysis, variable selection, outlier detection and analytical validation. The model was built from 28.5-55.5% w/w, with a root-mean-square-error-of-prediction of 1.6%. After its adoption, the method stability was confirmed over a period of two years through the development of a control chart. Besides this specific method, the present study sought to provide an example multivariate metrological methodology with potential for application in several areas, including new aspects, such as more stringent evaluation of the linearity of multivariate methods.

Biodegradable polyurethanes (PUR) were prepared from polyols derived from castor oil by transesterification of pentaerythritol-modified castor oil and lysine polyisocyanates (LDI and LTI). The polyurethanes obtained were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA). The mechanical behavior of the polyurethanes was measured by Shore A hardness and tensile testing (stress-strain curves). The biodegradable nature of the material was determined by contact angle, water absorption tests, and in vitro degradation in PBS solution. This study aims to examine the effect of the structure and functionality of diisocyanate on the mechanical properties and in vitro degradation of the material. The results were compared with homologous materials obtained from isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) used in previous works. The objective was to evaluate candidate materials that can be potentially used in tissue engineering.
