OBJETIVO: Examinar o perfil lipídico e parâmetros nutricionais de adolescentes com história familiar de doença arterial coronariana (DAC) prematura e avaliar os efeitos da orientação nutricional. MÉTODOS: O estudo incluiu 48 adolescentes de ambos os sexos e idades entre 10 e 19 anos (grupo caso, n=18; grupo controle, n=30). RESULTADOS: Os filhos de coronarianos jovens apresentaram valores mais elevados de colesterol total (189 ± 30 vs. 167 ± 26 mg/dl, p<0,01), LDL-C (144 ± 20 vs. 100 ± 27 mg/dl, p<0,001) e Apo B (80 ± 15 vs. 61 ± 18 mg/dl, p=0,001) e valores mais baixos de HDL-C (45 ± 9 vs. 51 ± 13 mg/dl, p<0,02) que os jovens controles. Não se observaram diferenças para os triglicérides e Apo A-I. Com a orientação dietoterápica obteve-se redução no consumo alimentar de ácidos graxos saturados (pré: 15,5 ± 4,7% vs. pós: 6,6 ± 3,7%, p=0,003) e melhora no perfil lipídico: CT (-8%, p=0,033), LDL-C (-18,2%, p=0,001), TG (-53%, p=0,002) nos filhos de pacientes com DAC prematura que apresentavam hiperlipidemia. CONCLUSÃO: A presença de dislipidemia foi mais prevalente em adolescentes filhos de portadores de DAC prematura, mas foi responsiva à intervenção nutricional.

OBJETIVO: Analisar a evolução a longo prazo de pacientes submetidos a valvoplastia mitral percutânea por balão com a técnica do balão de Inoue versus a técnica do balão único Balt, identificando os fatores que predisseram óbito e eventos maiores (óbito, nova valvoplastia mitral por balão ou cirurgia valvar mitral). MÉTODOS: O período de seguimento, nos grupos do balão único e do balão de Inoue, foi de 54 ± 31 (1 a 126) meses e de 34 ± 26 (2 a 105) meses, respectivamente (p < 0,0001). O balão único Balt foi usado em 254 (84,1%) pacientes e o balão de Inoue, em 48 (15,9%). RESULTADOS: Foram encontrados os seguintes dados, respectivamente, no grupo do balão de Inoue e do balão único: idade, 36,9 ± 10,4 (19 a 63) anos e 38,0 ± 12,6 (13 a 83) anos (p = 0,5769); escore ecocardiográfico, 7,5 ± 1,3 pontos e 7,2 ± 1,5 pontos (p = 0,1307); sexo feminino, 72,9% e 87,4% (p = 0,0097); fibrilação atrial, 10,4% e 16,1% (p = 0,4275); mortalidade no seguimento, 2,1% e 4,3% (0,6984); e eventos maiores, 8,3% e 17,7% (p = 0,1642). Não houve, na análise univariada e nas curvas de Kaplan-Meier, diferença entre as técnicas de Inoue e do balão único Balt para sobrevida e sobrevida livre de eventos maiores. Na análise multivariada, idade > 50 anos e escore ecocardiográfico > 8 predisseram, independentemente, óbito, e escore ecocardiográfico > 8 e área valvar mitral pós-procedimento < 1,50 cm² predisseram eventos maiores. CONCLUSÃO: Não houve diferença na evolução a longo prazo dos pacientes submetidos a técnica de Inoue versus a do balão único. Predisseram óbito e/ou eventos maiores: idade > 50 anos, escore ecocardiográfico > 8 e área valvar mitral pós-procedimento < 1,50 cm².

Background: Physical stress echocardiography is an established methodology for diagnosis and risk stratification of coronary artery disease in patients with physical capacity. In obese (body mass index ≥ 30 kg/m2) the usefulness of pharmacological stress echocardiography has been demonstrated; however, has not been reported the use of physical stress echocardiography in this growing population group. Objective: To assess the frequency of myocardial ischemia in obese and non-obese patients undergoing physical stress echocardiography and compare their clinical and echocardiographic differences. Methods: 4,050 patients who underwent treadmill physical stress echocardiography were studied according to the Bruce protocol, divided into two groups: obese (n = 945; 23.3%) and non-obese (n = 3,105; 76.6%). Results: There was no difference regarding gender. Obese patients were younger (55.4 ± 10.9 vs. 57.56 ± 11.67) and had a higher frequency of hypertension (75.2% vs. 57, 2%; p < 0.0001), diabetis mellitus (15.2% vs. 10.9%; p < 0.0001), dyslipidemia (59.5% vs 51.9%; p < 0.0001), family history of coronary artery disease (59.3% vs. 55.1%; p = 0.023) and physical inactivity (71.4% vs. 52.9%, p < 0.0001). The obese had greater aortic dimensions (3.27 vs. 3.14 cm; p < 0.0001), left atrium (3.97 vs. 3.72 cm; p < 0.0001) and the relative thickness of the ventricule (33.7 vs. 32.8 cm; p < 0.0001). Regarding the presence of myocardial ischemia, there was no difference between groups (19% vs. 17.9%; p = 0.41). In adjusted logistic regression, the presence of myocardial ischemia remained independently associated with age, female gender, diabetes and hypertension. Conclusion: Obesity did not behave as a predictor of the presence of ischemia and the physical stress echocardiography. The application of this assessment tool in large scale sample demonstrates the feasibility of the methodology, also in obese.

This paper describes the data obtained for the growth of sugar cane, Variety Co 419, and the amount and rate of absorption of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, and silicon, according to the age of the plant, in the soil and climate conditions of the state of S. Paulo, Brazil. An experiment was installed in the Estação Experimental de Cana de Açúcar "Dr. José Vizioli", at Piracicaba, state of S. The experiment consisted of 3 replications of the treatments: without fertilizer and with fertilizer (40 Kg of N, from ammonium sulfate; 100 Kg of P(2)0(5) from superphosphate and 40 Kg K2 O, from potassium chloride). Four complete stools (stalks and leaves) were harvested from each treatment, and the plants separated in stalks and leaves, weighed, dried and analysed every month from 6 up to 15 months of age. The data obtained for fresh and dry matter production are presented in table 2, and in figure land 2, in Portuguese. The curves for fresh and dry matter production showed that fertilized and no fertilized sugar cane with 6 months of age presents only 5% of its total weight at 15 months of age. The most intense period of growth in this experiment is located, between 8 and 12 months of age, that is between December 1956 and April 1957. The dry matter production of sugar cane with 8 and 12 months of age was, respectively, 12,5% and 87,5% of the total weight at 15 months of age. The growth of sugar cane in relation to its age follows a sigmoid curve, according to the figures 1, 2 and 3. The increase of dry matter production promoted by using fertilizer was 62,5% when sugar cane was 15 months of age. The concentration of the elements (tables 4 and 5 in Portuguese) present a general trend of decreasing as the cane grows older. In the stalks this is true for all elements studied in this experiment. But in the leaves, somme elements, like sulfur and silicon, appears to increase with the increasing of age. Others, like calcium and magnesium do not show large variations, and finally a third group, formed by nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium seems to decrease at the beginning and later presents a light increasing. The concentration of the elements was higher in the leaves than in the stalks from 6 up to 15 months of age. There were some exceptions. Potassium, magnesium and sulfur were higher in the stalks than in the leaves from 6 up to 8 or 9 months of age. After 9 months, the leaves presented more potassium, magnesium and sulfur than the stalks. The percentage of nitrogen in the leaves was lower in the plants that received fertilizer than in the plants without fertilizer with 6, 7, 8, 10, 11 and 13 months of age. This can be explained by "dilution effect". The uptake of elements by 4 stools (stalks and leaves) of sugar cane according to the plant age is showed in table 6, in Portuguese. The absorption of all studied elements, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur and silicon, was higher in plants that received fertilizer. The trend of uptake of nitrogen and potassium is similar to the trend of production of dry matter, that is, the maximum absorption of those two nutrients occurs between 9 and 13 months of age. The uptake of phosphorus was lower than calcium, magnesium and sulfur. Also, it is noteworthy the large amount of silicon absorbed by sugar cane.

O presente trabalho teve como objetivo estudar os efeitos da mistura de sementes de milho produzidas em duas safras consecutivas (sementes com aproximadamente um ano de idade e sementes novas) sobre o desempenho das plantas em campo. Para tanto, foram utilizadas sementes de 4 cultivares produzidas nos anos agrícolas de 1984/85 e 1985/86; inicialmente, o material mais velho foi armazenado sob duas condições (ambiente não controlado e câmara seca) por um período de cerca de 6,5 meses, quando se procedeu, então, a mistura daqueles materiais, nas proporções de 10 %, 15 % e 20 %, com sementes mais novas (safra 1985/86); foram testados também os materiais constituídos por 100 % de sementes produzidas na primeira safra armazenadas nas duas condições já referidas e aquele constituído por 100 % de sementes produzidas na última safra. Concluiu-se que, nas condições do presente trabalho, a mistura de sementes de milho de duas safras subsequentes pode ser uma alternativa viável para o aproveitamento de sobras não comercializadas,pois a mistura das sementes mais velhas, numa proporção de até 20 % não afetou o desempenho das plantas em campo.

The present morphological study of A. glabratus was based on the observation of shell, radula, renal region and genitalia of 50 specimens having a shell diameter of 18 mm. In this summary we record the data pertaining to the chracteristics that can be used in systematics. The numerals refere to the mean and their standard deviation; no special reference being made, they correspond to length measurements. Shell: 18 mm in diameter, 5.59 ± 0.24 mm in greatest width, 5 to 6 whorls. Right side umbilicated, left one weakly depressed. Last whorl about thrice as tall as the penultimate one at the aperture, the measurements being taken on the right side. Aperture perpendicular or a little oblique. Body, extended: 47.06 ± 3.31 mm. Renal tube: Narrow and elongated, 23.84 ± 1.90 mm, showing a pigmented ridge along its ventral surface. Ovotestis: 12.78 ± 1.50 mm. Mainly trifurcate diverticula attaching in fan-like manner to the collecting canal (this arrangement is seen to best advantage in the cephalic middle of the ovotestis). The collecting canal greatly swells at the cephalic end, narrowing suddenly as it leaves the ovotestis. Ovisperm duct: 13.70 ± 1.68 mm, including the non-unwound seminal vesicle. The latter, situated about 1 mm from the beginning af the ovisperm duct, was 1.14 ± 0.29 mm in greatest diameter, and is beset by numerous short diverticula. Sperm duct: 14.16 ± 1.27 mm, pursuing a sinous course along the oviduct. Prostate: Prostate duct 5.53 ± 0.74 mm, collecting a row of long diverticula, the latter 21.6 ± 3.5 in number. Last diverticulum generally simple or bifurcate, penultimate generally arborescent, bifurcate or simple, antepenultimate nearly always arborescent, the remaining ones arborescent. The arborescent diverticula frequently give off secondary branches. Vas deferens: 17.50 ± 2.05 mm. The ratio vas deferens/vergic sac was 4.7 ± 0.6. Verge: 3.70 ± 0.54 mm long, 0.12 ± 0.03 mm wide. Free end tapering to a point where the sperm canal opens. No penial stylet. Vergic sac: 3.77 ± 0.50 mm long, 0.19 ± 0.01 mm wide. The length ratio vergic sac/preputium was 1 ± 0.02. Preputium: Deeply pigmented, 3.79 ± 0.40 mm long, 0.89 ± 0.12 mm wide in the middle. Muscular diaphragm between it and the vergic sac. Two muscular pilasters along its lateral walls. Oviduct: 10.24 ± 1.29 mm, suddenly swollen at the cephalic end so that it forms a folded pouch capping the beginning of the uterus. Uterus: 10.58 ± 1.18 mm. Vagina: 2.06 ± 0.15 mm long, 0.32 ± 0.05 mm wide, showing a swelling at its caudal portion, just above the opening of the spermathecal duct. Spermatheca: 1.57 ± 0.41 mm long, 0.92 ± 0.23 mm wide. Spermathecal duct 1.15 ± 0.23 mm. Radula: 125 to 163 rows of teeth (mean 141.4 ± 9.8). Radula formula 27-1-27 to 34-1-34 (mean 30.9 ± 1.7).
