The objective of this study was to determine the responses of the wheat cultivars CD 108 and CD 111 for tolerance to organic acids. The effects of five concentrations of the three main acids formed in the soil were studied: acetic acid (0, 4, 8, 12 and 16 mM), propionic acid (0, 4, 8, 12 and 16 mM) and butyric acid (0, 2, 4, 8 and 12 mM). Tests included germination, shoot length, root length and dry weight of shoot and root. The variable root length is the most responsive variable for all the acids tested and the critical level of toxicity of acetic, propionic and butyric acids, which reduced root length by at least 50% was 9.0, 8.5 and 4.0 mM respectively. It was concluded that the presence of acetic, propionic and butyric acids in the germination substratum of wheat seeds of the cultivars CD 111 and CD 108 reduced seedling development, mainly by reducing the length of the radicles.

Plântulas de trigo (Triticum vulgare L.) da variedade Piratinà considerada suscetÃvel ao "crestamento" foram cultivadas em solução nutritiva empregando-se a técnica das raÃzes divididas. As plantas submetidas aos tratamentos correspondentes à s concentrações mais elevadas de alumÃnio, mostraram clorose nas folhas superiores e mais caracterÃsticamente inibição no desenvolvimento das raÃzes mergulhadas nas soluções com alumÃnio. Os tratamentos provocaram alterações na composição das plantas em nitrogênio, fósforo, potássio, cálcio, magnésio e alumÃnio sem afetar o pêso da matéria sêca das diferentes par tes da planta com exceção das raÃzes em contato com o alumÃnio.

Plântulas de trigo da variedade Piratinà suscetÃvel ao "crestamento" e da variedade Colônias, considerada resistente, foram cultivadas em solução nutritiva empregando-se a técnica das raÃzes divididas. Estas variedades foram submetidas aos tratamentos correspondentes as concentrações de 0,2 a 6,0 ppm de alumÃnio, sendo aplicados 25 microcuries de fósforo radioativo que foram retirados posteriormente a fim de que fôsse determinada a sua translocação. Em ambas variedades observou-se que a concentração de alumÃnio nas fôlhas não influia na translocação do fósforo (32P) para as fôlhas novas. Entretanto, as relações entre os teores de alumÃnio nas fôlhas e os teores de fósforo nas fôlhas, hastes e raÃzes foram diferentes nas variedades estudadas.

A resistência a diversas moléstias fúngicas do trigo tem sido transferida de espécies perenes da tribo Triticeae, mas o hÃbrido produzido pelo cruzamento intergenérico apresenta embrião abortivo. Embora a técnica de resgate e cultivo in vitro destes embriões já seja amplamente utilizada, sua eficiência ainda é muito baixa. Este trabalho objetivou a obtenção de progênies de retrocruzamentos em hÃbrido F1 (2n=56), proveniente do cruzamento de trigo (Triticum aestivum) (2n=42) com Agropyron elongatum (2n=70), utilizando-se a técnica de cultivo in vitro dos embriões imaturos. Partindo-se do material perene na geração F1, utilizou-se o trigo como parental recorrente nos retrocruzamentos. A eficiência da polinização foi de 6% no primeiro retrocruzamento (RC1) e de 12,4% no segundo (RC2). As plantas do RC1 foram viabilizadas pelo resgate e cultivo in vitro dos embriões imaturos utilizando- se o meio batata-regeneração, com adição de vitaminas. De 22 sementes, 18 embriões foram resgatados e cultivados in vitro, originando 12 plântulas. Desses embriões, 50% foram normais, 27,8% apresentaram tamanho reduzido, 16,7% foram deformados e 5,5% apresentaram desenvolvimento retardado. A eficiência do cultivo dos embriões na regeneração de plântulas foi de 66,6%. Tal resultado indica que a técnica de resgate e o meio de cultura utilizados foram eficientes para o cultivo e regeneração dos embriões hÃbridos, obtendo progênies viáveis de retrocruzamentos a partir de hÃbridos intergenéricos, nas condições realizadas.

Experiments were carried out under laboratory, growth chamber, and field conditions to evaluate the effect of Plant growth-promoting and bioprotecting rhizobacteria (PGPBR) seed treatment on seed pathogens, seed germination, plant growth, and grain yield of wheat (Triticum aestivum). Most of the PGPBR strongly reduced the recovery of the pathogens from infected wheat seeds. All treatments, except the chemical iprodione + thiram, significantly promoted plant growth over the nontreated control. Psudomonas putida biotype A (11) and P. agglomerans (14) showed the greatest effects. Field experiments, carried out at two locations, indicated that all treatments, except P. chlororaphis (42), significantly increased seedling emergence of wheat . In Pato Branco, PR, P. putida biotype A (11) and P. putida biotype B (44) presented the best results, both being superior to fungal biological and chemical treatments. In Passo Fundo P. putida biotype A (11) and P. putida biotype B (17 and 44) significantly improved yield over the nontreated control. Yield increases of these three PGPBR were similar to the chemical treatment iprodione + thiram. In Pato Branco, P. putida biotype A (11) and P. putida biotype B (17), as well as the chemical treatment, provided significant increase over the nontreated control. Yield increases by the PGPBR varied from 18% to 22% in Passo Fundo and from 27% to 28% in Pato Branco.

The Mal de RÃo Cuarto disease is caused by Mal de RÃo Cuarto virus (MRCV) transmitted by Delphacodes kuscheli. Comparative studies were carried out on the cytopathological alterations produced by MRCV in corn (Zea mays), wheat (Triticum aestivum) and barley (Hordeum vulgare), as seen with a transmission electron microscope. Corn plants were infected with viruliferous D. kuscheli collected from the endemic disease area (i.e. RÃo Cuarto County, Córdoba, Argentina). For the viral transmission to small grain cereal plants, laboratory rared insects were used. In this case, the inoculum source was wheat and barley plants infected with MRCV isolate grown in a greenhouse. Leaf samples with conspicuous symptoms were collected: enations and size reduction in corn; crenatures, swelling veins and dark green color in small grain cereals. Viral infection was corroborated by DAS-ELISA. Viroplasms containing complete and incomplete virus particles and fibrillar material were found in the cytoplasm of infected cells in all species. Mature virions were between 60 and 70 nm diameter. In wheat and barley, viroplasms and dispersed particles were observed only in phloem, while in corn virions were also found in cells of the bundle sheath. Crystalline arrays of particles were detected in corn enation constitutive cells. Tubular inclusions were found only in wheat samples. The three species showed abnormalities in the chloroplasts of affected cells. The results showed that MRCV cytopathology has similarities with other viruses from the genus Fijivirus, family family Reoviridae, but slight differences depending upon the host plant.

Twenty isolates of four fungal species, agents of "Helminthosporium" diseases in cereals, were collected from different regions: nine Bipolarisoryzae isolated from rice (Oryza sativa), seven B.sorokiniana from wheat (Triticum aestivum), two B. maydis, and two Exserohilumturcicum from maize (Zea mays). The strains were compared by PCR-RFLP and RAPD analysis. Size polymorphism among the isolates in the ITS region comprising the 5.8 S rDNA indicated genetic differences among the isolates, while a UPGMA phenogram constructed after the digestion of this region with restriction enzymes showed inter- and intra-specific polymorphism. The RAPD profiles indicated an expressive level of polymorphism among different species, compared with a low level of polymorphism among isolates of the same species. A UPGMA phenogram grouped the isolates according to the species and their host plant. RAPD profiles did not reveal polymorphism that directly correlated climatic factors with geographic source of the isolates of B. sorokiniana, and B. oryzae. Teleomorphic species revealed high similarity with their correspondent anamorphs.

Seventy-two monoconidial isolates of Magnaporthe grisea were obtained from the States of Mato Grosso do Sul and Paraná. The isolates were inoculated on seedlings of 20 wheat (Triticum aestivum) cultivars under greenhouse conditions. The virulence diversity of M. grisea was assessed based on compatible and incompatible reactions of leaf blast on wheat cultivars. Fifty-four distinct virulence patterns were identified on test cultivars among the isolates collected from the two wheat growing States. Sixteen of these isolates corresponding to 22.2% showed similar virulence pattern. None of the wheat cultivars was resistant to all isolates of M. grisea, but the cultivars differed in degree of resistance as measured by the relative spectrum of resistance (RSR) and disease index (DI). Among the cultivars the RSR ranged from 0 to 53.3% and DI from 0.4662 to 0.9662 (0 to 1 scale). The wheat cultivar BR18 exhibited a broad resistance spectrum in relation to the rest of the tested cultivars to the isolates of M. grisea, and can be used in wheat resistance breeding.

Wheat (Triticum aestivum) powdery mildew, caused by the biotrophic fungus Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici, is one of the most severe foliar diseases attacking this crop, reducing grain yields by 10% to 62% in Brazil. The disease can be controlled by genetic resistance of the host, but the pathogen has physiological specialization, which enables it to infect wheat cultivars that have remained resistant for years. The objective of this work was to evaluate the variability of pathogenic strains of B. graminis f. sp. tritici collected in Brazil and the effectiveness of wheat resistance genes to powdery mildew in the 2003 crop season. Plants of a differential series were inoculated with each monopustular isolate. Thirty-one combinations of effective and ineffective resistance genes were identified. Only the gene Pm4a+... remained totally effective to all isolates, and gene Pm6 was highly effective (below 10% of susceptibility), whereas genes Pm3a and Pm8 were totally ineffective (susceptible to all isolates). Genes Pm3c, D1, and D2 showed low effectiveness (above 50% of susceptibility), and genes Pm1, 2, 4a, 1+?, and 2+Mld had mean effective results to most strains (susceptibility between 10% and 49%). The virulence formula Pm1, 3c, 4a, 6, 1+?, 2+Mld, 4a+..., D2 (effective genes) / 2, 3a, 8, D1 (ineffective genes) was most frequently found, accounting for 15% of the occurrences. The most frequent number of ineffective genes was seven, ranging from three to ten.

Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) is a disease of great concern in wheat (Triticum aestivum). Due to its relatively narrow susceptible phase and environmental dependence, the pathosystem is suitable for modeling. In the present work, a mechanistic model for estimating an infection index of FHB was developed. The model is process-based driven by rates, rules and coefficients for estimating the dynamics of flowering, airborne inoculum density and infection frequency. The latter is a function of temperature during an infection event (IE), which is defined based on a combination of daily records of precipitation and mean relative humidity. The daily infection index is the product of the daily proportion of susceptible tissue available, infection frequency and spore cloud density. The model was evaluated with an independent dataset of epidemics recorded in experimental plots (five years and three planting dates) at Passo Fundo, Brazil. Four models that use different factors were tested, and results showed all were able to explain variation for disease incidence and severity. A model that uses a correction factor for extending host susceptibility and daily spore cloud density to account for post-flowering infections was the most accurate explaining 93% of the variation in disease severity and 69% of disease incidence according to regression analysis.

The correct quantification of blast caused by the fungus Magnaporthe oryzae on wheat (Triticum aestivum) spikes is an important component to understand the development of this disease aimed at its control. Visual quantification based on a diagrammatic scale can be a practical and efficient strategy that has already proven to be useful against several plant pathosystems, including diseases affecting wheat spikes like glume blotch and fusarium head blight. Spikes showing different disease severity values were collected from a wheat field with the aim of elaborating a diagrammatic scale to quantify blast severity on wheat spikes. The spikes were photographed and blast severity was determined by using resources of the software ImageJ. A diagrammatic scale was developed with the following disease severity values: 3.7, 7.5, 21.4, 30.5, 43.8, 57.3, 68.1, 86.0, and 100.0%. An asymptomatic spike was added to the scale. Scale validation was performed by eight people who estimated blast severity by using digitalized images of 40 wheat spikes. Foram realizados três experimentos a campo em 1980, no Centro Nacional de Pesquisa de Trigo/EMBRAPA, Passo Fundo, RS, visando conhecer o comportamento dos herbicidas diclofop, dicamba, a associação 2,4 D com dicamba e a mistura diclofop + (2,4 D + dicamba), no controle de azevém (Lolium multiflorum L.) e gorga (Spergula arvensis L.). Ao mesmo tempo foi avaliada a seletividade que estes herbicidas apresentam à s culturas de trigo (Triticum aestivum L.), cevada (Hordeum vulgare L.) e centeio (Secale cereale L.). Os resultados da avaliação visual de fitotoxicidade mostra ram que o dicamba causou o maior grau de injúria para as três culturas. Cevada mostrou ser a cultura mais sensÃvel ao dicamba na fase inicial. Trigo, cevada e centeio foram tolerantes ao diclofop. A mistura diclofop + (2,4 D + dicamba) não controlou o azevém nas três culturas. Esta mistura apresentou ainda redução no controle de gorga, nas culturas de cevada e centeio. Dicamba ocasionou redução no rendimento de grãos das culturas, mostrando ser pouco seletivo na dose testada. Centeio sofreu uma redução no rendimento de grãos causada por diclofop, enquanto que a mistura diclofop + (2,4 D + dicamba) foi seletiva para todas as culturas.

Experimentos em série de substituição possibilitam o estudo da competição inter e intra-especÃfica. A premissa desses experimentos é de que as produtividades das misturas podem ser determinadas pela comparação com a produtividade da monocultura. O objetivo deste trabalho foi investigar a habilidade competitiva relativa de cultivar de trigo com as espécies daninhas azevém ou nabo. Foram realizados três experimentos em casa de vegetação na UFPel, no ano de 2006. O delineamento utilizado foi o completamente casualizado, com quatro repetições, sendo os tratamentos arranjados em série de substituição. As proporções de plantas de trigo e dos competidores azevém ou nabo foram: 100/0, 75/25, 50/50, 25/75 e 0/100, com população total de 900 plantas m-2. A análise estatÃstica da competitividade foi realizada através de diagramas aplicados aos experimentos substitutivos e interpretações dos Ãndices de competitividade. As relações competitivas entre plantas de trigo e azevém ou entre trigo e nabo são alteradas pela proporção de plantas que compõem a associação; a cultura do trigo apresenta habilidade competitiva superior à do azevém, mas inferior à do nabo, quando as espécies ocorrem em proporções iguais de plantas nas associações, e essas espécies ocupam o mesmo nicho ecológico.

Decomposing wheat (Triticum aestivum) straw and rhizosphere-infested soil were evaluated for their suppressive activity against horse purslane (Trianthema portulacastrum), a noxious summer weed in Pakistan. Two separate pot studies were carried out. Wheat straw was incorporated at 4, 6 and 8 g kg-1 soil five days before the sowing of horse purslane. Pots without straw incorporation were maintained as control. In a second study, soil was taken from 15 and 30 cm depths from a previously cropped wheat field immediately after its harvest and was used as growing medium. Soil from an intentionally uncropped area of the same field was used as control. Suppressive activity was measured in terms of germination dynamics, seedling growth, and biochemical attributes such as chlorophyll contents, total soluble phenolics, soluble protein and antioxidant enzymes. Germination, seedling growth, chlorophyll contents and soluble protein of horse purslane were all negatively influenced. Higher phenolics and enhanced activities of antioxidant enzymes were noticed in response to wheat residues incorporation and its rhizosphere soil. Both studies established that the phytotoxic influence of wheat straw and wheat-infested rhizosphere soil on horse purslane can further be exploited for horse purslane management as a sustainable approach.

The toxic action of aqueous wheat (Triticum aestivum) straw extracts was investigated on germination, early seedling growth, some biochemical attributes and the antioxidant enzymes of horse purslane (Trianthemaportulacastrum). Aqueous extracts of wheat straw were prepared by soaking the wheat straw in distilled water in 1:10 w/v ratio and diluted to obtain the concentrations of 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100%. These were used as pre and post emergence in laboratory and screen house trials. Wheat aqueous extracts exhibited phytotoxicity to horse purslane by inhibiting and delaying its germination and suppressing seedling growth. Wheat phytotoxins in its aqueous extracts suppressed the chlorophyll content and soluble protein, and enhanced soluble phenolics and the activity of antioxidant enzymes as catalase, peroxidase and superoxide dismutase in the seedlings of horse purslane compared with the control. Such inhibitory activity is believed to originate from exposure to wheat phytotoxins that are present in its aqueous straw extract. The suppressive effects of wheat straw need to be investigated further under field conditions.
