In this work, the interactions between the non-ionic polymer of ethyl(hydroxyethyl)cellulose (EHEC) and mixed anionic surfactant sodium dodecanoate (SDoD)-sodium decanoate (SDeC) in aqueous media, at pH 9.2 (20 mM borate/NaOH buffer) were investigated by electric conductivity and light transmittance measurements at 25 ºC. The parameters of the surfactant to polymer association processes such as the critical aggregation concentration and saturation of the polymer by surfactants were determined from plots of specific conductivity vs total surfactant concentration, [surfactant]tot = [SDoD] + [SDeC]. Through the results was not observed a specific link of polymer with the surfactant, implying therefore a phenomenon only cooperative association.

The major applications of organoclays are in adsorption of organic polluents. The objective of this work was the synthesis and characterization of organoclays using differents amounts of cationic surfactant hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide. The clays were characterized by low angle x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), infrared with Fourier tranformation (FTIR), BET surface area, elemental analysis (CHN), Foster swell and adsorption of methylene blue. The surfactant can adsorb in differents forms in the interlamelar region changed the basal spacing. The presence of the surfactant adsorbed can be favorable or not in adsorption of the methylene blue due the different interactions dye-organoclays.

The use of fatty acids (FAs) as amphiphiles is very important because they have a behaving similar to surfactants. The formulation for the preferential partition of these species was studied by varying the amount of salt at constant acid concentration. As the salt concentration increases, a Winsor I→III→II transition is observed for all the systems studied. Furthermore, the electrolyte concentration required to obtain the optimum formulation varies inversely with the chain length of the acid. The partition coefficient of the surfactant allows one to obtain thermodynamic information on the acid transfer process between the phases of the system.

In this work, theospheres (innovative lipid nanoparticles) were prepared by the high pressure homogenization technique using different surfactants for dapsone encapsulation. Mean particle size ranged from 105 to 153 nm and negative zeta potentials were obtained for all theosphere formulations. Atomic force microscopy images confirmed the spherical shape of theospheres. The HPLC method used to determine dapsone-loaded theospheres was selective, linear, exact and precise. The entrapment efficiency of dapsone was 91.4%. Theospheres provided controlled release of idebenone (52.7 ± 1.6%) in comparison to the free drug (103.1 ± 1.9%).

The dispersion of carbon nanotubes in water for their utilization in nanoscale devices is a challenging task. Comparative studies on interaction and dispersion of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWNT) using two different surfactants (sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS, and polyoxyethylenesorbitanmonooleate, Tween 80) are presented. The interaction between carbon nanotubes and surfactants was studied by tensiometry, conductivimetry, and fluorimetry. The dispersions of MWNT in surfactants were characterized using a UV-vis spectrophotometer. For effective dispersion, the minimum weight ratio of MWNT to surfactant was 1:41 and 1:3 for SDS and Tween 80, respectively.

Omega-3 enriched partial acylglycerols are beneficial for human health. The aim of this study was to obtain monoacylglycerols (MAG) and diacylglycerols (DAG) by means of glycerolysis of fish oil catalyzed by a lipase from Rhizomucor miehei in the presence of food grade surfactants (Tween 65, 80 or 85). Glycerolysis was successful in the reaction media for all the tested surfactants, showing their potential for use as additives in such a system. The best results, however, were obtained for the reaction medium in the absence of surfactant whose peroxide value was the lowest after glycerolysis.

The sea surface microlayer (SML), although poorly understood, is important in biogeochemical cycling and sea - air exchanges; it is a source or a sink for a range of pollutants. In this paper, an overview of sampling techniques and the role of SML in biogeochemical cycles and climate is presented. The chemical and biological nature of the ocean surface film and its interaction with atmospheric aerosols are discussed. Special attention is given to organic constituents, gel-like compounds, surfactants, halogenated compounds, and metals. Estimates of air - sea exchange fluxes-with focus on organic carbon, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and polychlorinated biphenyls-are compiled. In addition, research gaps in the chemical composition of marine aerosols and their relationship with SML are described.

Soft nanoparticles of size 200-400 nm were obtained from soybean protein isolate (SPI). The particles were formed and suspended in water by the coacervation of aqueous suspensions of SPI in hostile buffered aqueous solutions in the presence of surfactants. We investigate the effect of storage, ionic strength, and concentrations of SPI and surfactant on nanoparticle size and zeta potential. Transmission electron microscopy images and scattering techniques (SLS/ DLS) revealed that the particles are spherical, with hydrophilic chains at the surface.

Presently, the world depends on a wide variety of new materials based on organofluorine compounds. These compounds can be used as surfactants, high resistance polymers, liquid crystals, agrochemicals, radiopharmaceuticals for positron emission tomography, and drugs. However, the selective formation of C–F bonds remains a challenge. This study reviews our knowledge of organofluorine compounds and describes conventional and modern selective fluorination methods for obtaining these compounds. Here, we highlight the most common fluorination reagents and describe the fluorination reactions. This work presents the synthesis of silicas containing cetyltrialkylammoniun surfactants in their mesopores. Initially, the aqueous dispersions of these surfactants were characterized by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The hybrid silicas obtained from these dispersions were evaluated by X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and nitrogen physisorption. The XRD showed that, increasing the head size, there is a shift of the peak corresponding to the (100) diffraction plane to smaller 2θ angles, which indicates an increase in the silicas porous diameter. The increasing of the silicas porous diameter was confirmed by nitrogen physisorption. The base catalytic properties of these hybrid silicas were evaluated in the transesterification reaction showing that those containing the cations C16Et3+ and C16Pr3+ showed better performance.

The reduction of pesticide spraying drift is still one of the major challenges in Brazilian agriculture. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of different adjuvant products, such as surfactants, drift retardants, mineral oil and vegetable oil for reducing drift in agricultural spraying. The experiment consisted of quantifying drift of sprayings of 18 adjuvants dissolved in water under controlled conditions in a wind tunnel. Tests were performed in triplicates with spraying nozzles type Teejet XR8003 VK, pressure of 200kPa and medium drops. Solutions sprayed were marked with Brilliant Blue dye at 0.6% (m v-1). The drift was collected using polyethylene strips transversally fixed along the tunnel at different distances from the nozzle and different heights from the bottom part of the tunnel. Drift deposits were evaluated by spectrophotometry in order to quantify deposits. The adjuvants from chemical groups of mineral oil and drift retardant resulted in lower values of drift in comparison with surfactants and water. The results obtained in laboratory show that the selection of appropriate class and concentration of adjuvants can significantly decrease the risk of drift in agricultural spraying. However, the best results obtained in laboratory should be validated with pesticide under field conditions in the future.

The effect of urea on biomimetic aggregates (aqueous and reversed micelles, vesicles and monolayers) was investigated to obtain insights into the effect of the denaturant on structured macromolecules. Direct evidence obtained from light scattering (static and dynamic), monolayer maximum isothermal compression and ionic conductivity measurements, together with indirect evidence from fluorescence photodissociation, fluorescence suppression, and thermal reactions, strongly indicates the direct interaction mechanism of urea with the aggregates. Preferential solvation of the surfactant headgroups by urea results in an increase in the monomer dissociation degree (when applied), which leads to an increase in the area per headgroup and also in the loss of counterion affinities

It is well known that the interaction of polyelectrolytes with oppositely charged surfactants leads to an associative phase separation; however, the phase behavior of DNA and oppositely charged surfactants is more strongly associative than observed in other systems. A precipitate is formed with very low amounts of surfactant and DNA. DNA compaction is a general phenomenon in the presence of multivalent ions and positively charged surfaces; because of the high charge density there are strong attractive ion correlation effects. Techniques like phase diagram determinations, fluorescence microscopy, and ellipsometry were used to study these systems. The interaction between DNA and catanionic mixtures (i.e., mixtures of cationic and anionic surfactants) was also investigated. We observed that DNA compacts and adsorbs onto the surface of positively charged vesicles, and that the addition of an anionic surfactant can release DNA back into solution from a compact globular complex between DNA and the cationic surfactant. Finally, DNA interactions with polycations, chitosans with different chain lengths, were studied by fluorescence microscopy, in vivo transfection assays and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy. The general conclusion is that a chitosan effective in promoting compaction is also efficient in transfection.

Surfactants are frequently used to improve solubilization of lipophilic drugs. Cremophor EL (CrEL) is a polyoxyethylated castor oil surfactant used to solubilize water-insoluble drugs such as anesthetic, antineoplastic, immunosuppressive and analgesic drugs, vitamins and new synthetic compounds, including potential analgesics. The antinociceptive effect of CrEL (3.2, 6.4 and 10.6 g/kg, in 10 ml/kg body weight, by gavage) on the abdominal writhing response induced by intraperitoneal administration of acetic acid (0.8%, 10 ml/kg body weight) and on the tail immersion test was investigated in mice. Control animals received castor oil (10 ml/kg body weight) or saline (0.9% NaCl, 10 ml/kg body weight). CrEL reduced nociception in a dose-dependent manner in both tests. At 10.6 g/kg, CrEL caused antinociception similar to that induced by dipyrone (300 mg/kg, by gavage) in the abdominal writhing test, and antinociception similar to that induced by morphine (20 mg/kg, by gavage) in the tail immersion test. The effect of castor oil was similar to that of saline in both assays. These data indicate that the appropriate controls should be used when evaluating the effects of potential antinociceptive agents dissolved in CrEL.

Solid lipid particles have been investigated by food researchers due to their ability to enhance the incorporation and bioavailability of lipophilic bioactives in aqueous formulations. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the physicochemical stability and digestibility of lipid microparticles produced with tristearin and palm kernel oil. The motivation for conducting this study was the fact that mixing lipids can prevent the expulsion of the bioactive from the lipid core and enhance the digestibility of lipid structures. The lipid microparticles containing different palm kernel oil contents were stable after 60 days of storage according to the particle size and zeta potential data. Their calorimetric behavior indicated that they were composed of a very heterogeneous lipid matrix. Lipid microparticles were stable under various conditions of ionic strength, sugar concentration, temperature, and pH. Digestibility assays indicated no differences in the release of free fatty acids, which was approximately 30% in all analises. The in vitro digestibility tests showed that the amount of palm kernel in the particles did not affect the percentage of lipolysis, probably due to the high amount of surfactants used and/or the solid state of the microparticles.
