INTRODUÇÃO: A pesquisa da fonte alimentar dos triatomíneos auxilia no conhecimento sobre a biologia destes insetos, inclusive para inferir-se a importância dos mesmos como transmissores do Trypanosoma cruzi ao homem. MÉTODOS: O presente estudo objetivou registrar, através da reação de precipitina, a fonte alimentar de triatomíneos provenientes de 54 municípios da região centro-oeste de Minas Gerais, assim como a infecção natural destes para flagelados semelhantes ao Trypanosoma cruzi. RESULTADOS: De julho de 2003 até março de 2007, foram avaliados 416 insetos, todos da espécie Panstrongylus megistus. Somando-se as ocorrências, as aves (70%) e os humanos (22,5%) constituíram as principais fontes sanguíneas. Encontrou-se 16 (3,8%) insetos positivos para flagelados semelhantes ao Trypanosoma cruzi sendo que oito realizaram hematofagia no homem. CONCLUSÕES: Os resultados demonstram necessidade de acentuar a vigilância entomológica na região, visto que foi detectada a possibilidade de ocorrência de novos casos da doença de Chagas através da transmissão vetorial.

INTRODUÇÃO: A competência vetorial de triatomíneos é determinada a partir de estudos sobre biologia e comportamento alimentar em condições de campo e/ou laboratório. Fatores como número de picadas, quantidade de sangue ingerido e tempo de defecação têm implicações na transmissão de tripanosomatídeos. Parâmetros biológicos e comportamentais de Rhodnius neglectus e R. robustus foram comparados experimentalmente para estimar diferenças no potencial de transmissão de tripanosomatídeos. MÉTODOS: Os triatomíneos foram observados diariamente para determinar o período de desenvolvimento ninfal, mortalidade, detecção da fonte alimentar, número de picadas, tempo do repasto sanguíneo, quantidade de sangue ingerido, tempo entre o final do repasto e a primeira defecação e frequência de defecação. RESULTADOS: Apesar do período ninfal de R. neglectus (156,4 ± 25,05d) ter sido menor que o de R. robustus (204,7 ± 13,22d), a mortalidade foi similar entre as espécies (63,8 e 65%, respectivamente). R. robustus e R. neglectus detectaram rapidamente a fonte alimentar, especialmente no primeiro estádio (2,5 e 1,6min, respectivamente). Apesar do tempo de repasto sanguíneo ter sido similar entre as espécies, R. robustus ingeriu em média uma maior quantidade de sangue em todos os estádios, com maiores valores para as ninfas V. As ninfas de R. neglectus picaram mais vezes as fontes alimentares, defecaram mais rápido e mais frequentemente que as de R. robustus. CONCLUSÕES: Sob as condições de laboratório usadas, R. neglectus possui um maior potencial para transmissão de Trypanosoma cruzi e T. rangeli que R. robustus, atributo que deve ser avaliado em infecções experimentais.

INTRODUCTION: This paper reports, for the first time, the presence of the Eratyrus mucronatus species in the State of Rondonia, Brazil. METHODS: These specimens were caught by chance in the forest and later they were collected using luminous traps. RESULTS: After finding these specimens, the number of the Triatominae genera in Rondonia rose to four, while its species rose to seven. CONCLUSIONS: Complimentary studies will be conducted in order to allow for clearer understanding the ecology of this arthropod, its possible role in transmitting Chagas' disease and its current geographical distribution.

Introduction: This study reports for the first time the infection of Rhodnius montenegrensis by Trypanosoma rangeli. Methods: The triatomines were manually collected in Attalea speciosa in the municipality of Buritis, Rondônia. The identification of the trypanosomatid species was confirmed by multiplex PCR. Results: All of the collected triatomines were R. montenegrensis. The analysis confirmed that all of the adults were infected with the epimastigote form of T. rangeli. Conclusions: This report of a new vector of T. rangeli raises a warning for the State of Rondônia because the simultaneous presence of T. rangeli with T. cruzi in the same geographic region enables the occurrence of mixed infections in hosts and vectors, which complicates the differential diagnosis.

IntroductionFor the first time we provide the description of the melanic (dark) morphotype of Rhodnius nasutus and determine the pattern of genetic inheritance for this characteristic.MethodsDark morph R. nasutus specimens were crossbred with standard (typically patterned) R. nasutus.ResultsWe present the first occurrence of the melanic morphotype in the genus Rhodnius. The crossbreeding results demonstrate that the inheritance pattern of this characteristic follows Mendel's simple laws of segregation and an independent assortment of alleles.ConclusionsPhenotypic variation of R. nasutus reinforces the heterogeneity found in the Triatominae. Descriptions of new species in this subfamily require rigorous validation criteria.

Introduction Eratyrus mucronatus Stål, 1859 is a wild triatomine vector of Trypanosoma cruzi Chagas, 1909. However, little is known regarding the biology and ecoepidemiology of this triatomine in the Brazilian Amazon. The present study describes the biology of E. mucronatus grown under laboratory conditions and the epidemiological aspects of its natural breeding sites. Methods Five colonies were monitored in the field for 3 years. Temperature and humidity measurements were taken in the mornings and afternoons at the natural breeding sites, and the behavior and distribution of the nymphs and adults were observed in the wild colony. We also monitored the life cycle under controlled laboratory conditions. Results Some factors that were considered decisive for the establishment of these colonies were present at all of the colonies studied in the field. These factors included an active termite nest, a vertebrate for repast, and dry and shaded substrates with temperatures of 24-28°C and with humidity of 80-90%. A generation was developed in 274 days under these microclimatic conditions in the laboratory. Conclusions The climatic variables described in the field indicate that these environmental parameters have a limiting effect on the dispersal and colonization of E. mucronatus to new environments. In addition, the long period of development to adulthood demonstrates that only one generation can develop per year even under the more favorable laboratory conditions.

Introduction Biological collections are depositories of information on different species and contribute to the knowledge, protection, conservation and maintenance of biodiversity. Methods A list of triatomine species currently included in the Collection of Chagas Disease Vectors (FIOCRUZ-COLVEC) was prepared from the database made available by the Reference Center on Environmental Information. Results COLVEC curatorship houses 4,778 specimens of triatomines, of which 811 come from other American countries (Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Costa Rica, the United States of America, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela) and 3,967 are autochthonous from Brazil. Altogether, 56 species of Chagas disease vectors are represented in the COLVEC: two species of the Tribe Cavernicolini Usinger, 1944; fifteen species of the tribe Rhodniini Pinto, 1926, of which 12 are of the genus Rhodnius and 3 are of the genus Psamolestes; and 39 species of the tribe Triatomini Jeannel, 1919, represented by the genus Dipetalogaster, two species of the genus Eratyrus, two of the genus Meccus, seven of the genus Panstrongylus and 27 of the genus Triatoma. Conclusions This list provides important data on the diversity of triatomines currently included in COLVEC, including the expanded area of Panstrongylus lutzi occurrence in the municipalities Pirapora and Januária, State of Minas Gerais. The maintenance and expansion of the collection ensures the preservation of biodiversity and further studies.

AbstractIn the last 15 years, different types of Triatominae resistance to different insecticides have been reported; thus, resistance may be more widespread than known, requiring better characterization and delimitation, which was the aim of this review. This review was structured on a literature search of all articles from 1970 to 2015 in the PubMed database that contained the keywords Insecticide resistance and Triatominae . Out of 295 articles screened by title, 33 texts were selected for detailed analysis. Insecticide resistance of Triatomines is a complex phenomenon that has been primarily reported in Argentina and Bolivia, and is caused by different factors (associated or isolated). Insecticide resistance of Triatominae is a characteristic inherited in an autosomal and semi-dominant manner, and is polygenic, being present in both domestic and sylvatic populations. The toxicological profile observed in eggs cannot be transposed to different stages of evolution. Different toxicological profiles exist at macro- and microgeographical levels. The insecticide phenotype has both reproductive and developmental costs. Different physiological mechanisms are involved in resistance. Studies of Triatomine resistance to insecticides highlight three deficiencies in interpreting the obtained results: I) the vast diversity of methodologies, despite the existence of a single guiding protocol; II) the lack of information on the actual impact of resistance ratios in the field; and III) the concept of the susceptibility reference lineage. Research on the biological and behavioral characteristics of each Triatominae species that has evolved resistance is required in relation to the environmental conditions of each region.

INTRODUCTION: This paper reports, for the first time, the presence of Rhodnius montenegrensis in the State of Acre, Brazil.METHODS: Two female R. montenegrensis were collected in a dwelling in the rural area of Rio Branco, Acre, Brazil.RESULTS: The occurrence of this species was confirmed, and the number of Triatominae species in the State of Acre increased from four to five.CONCLUSIONS: Further studies should be performed to reach a clearer understanding of the ecology of this arthropod, its possible role in transmitting Chagas' disease and rangeliosis, and its current geographical distribution in the region.

ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: The transmission cycle of Trypanosoma cruzi in the Brazilian Pantanal region has been studied during the last decade. Although considerable knowledge is available regarding the mammalian hosts infected by T. cruzi in this wetland, no studies have investigated its vectors in this region. This study aimed to investigate the presence of sylvatic triatomine species in different habitats of the Brazilian Pantanal region and to correlate their presence with the occurrences of vertebrate hosts and T. cruzi infection.METHODS: The fieldwork involved passive search by using light traps and Noireau traps and active search by visual inspection. The light traps were placed at five selected points along forested areas for seven nights during each of the nine excursions. At each point where a light trap was set, eight Noireau traps were placed in palm trees and bromeliads.RESULTS: In all, 88 triatomine bugs were collected: two and one individuals from light traps and Noireau traps, respectively; three from peridomestic areas; 23 in coati nests; and 59 in thornbird nests. In this study, active search in microhabitats showed higher efficiency than passive search, since 95% of the triatomine bugs were caught in nests. Further, triatomine bugs were only found to be infected by T. cruzi in coati nests.CONCLUSIONS: Coati nests might act as a point of convergence and dispersion for triatomine bugs and mammal hosts infected by T. cruzi, thereby playing an important role in the sylvatic cycle of T. cruziin the Pantanal region.

Abstract: INTRODUCTION : Insects of the subfamily Triatominae are vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi , the Chagas disease parasite, and their flying behavior has epidemiological importance. The flying capacity is strikingly different across and within Triatominae species, as well as between sexes or individuals. Many Triatoma infestans individuals have wings but no flying muscles. In other Triatominae species, no clear relationships were found between wing length and flying behavior. If wing presence or size is not reflective of the flying behavior, which other parts of the body could be considered as reliable markers of this important function? METHODS : The genus Mepraia has exceptional characteristics with invariably wingless females and wingless or winged males. We calculated the porous surface exposed to odorant molecules to estimate the olfactory capacity of Mepraia spinolai . The head shape and thorax size were estimated using the geometric morphometric approach and traditional morphometric techniques, respectively. RESULTS : Alary polymorphism in M. spinolai was significantly associated with consistent modification of the thorax size, head shape, and notable change in the estimated olfactory capacity. The macropterous individuals had a larger olfactory surface and thorax size and significantly different head shape compared to those of the micropterous individuals. CONCLUSIONS: We concluded that these structural changes could be associated with the flying potential of Triatominae. Thus, morphological attributes not found on wings could help determine the likely flying potential of the bugs.

Os autores apresentam dados sobre a ocorrênncia de triatomíneas silvestres encon-tiados em vários ecótopos (palmeiras, tocas de roedores e epífitas aéreas), assim como, capturas através de atração luminosa, no reservatório da Usina Hidrelétrica Tucu ruí, num trecho compreendido entre Santo Antonio e Ipixuna, rio Tocantins; enfocando as pectos do ciclo de vida de Rhodnius robustus realizado no laboratôrio do INPA, Manaus.

Apresenta-se a distribuição de Panstrongylus megistus no Estado do Maranhão, com base nos dados do inquérito triatomínico realizado pela Fundação Nacional de Saúde, de 1982 a 1995. O método básico utilizado foi a captura de adultos e ninfas nos ambientes peri e intradomiciliares. Os trabalhos de coleta dentro das casas começavam pelos cômodos dos fundos, passando de um aposento para o outro, até a frente. Na parte externa das casas foram inspecionados pátio, quintal, jardim e anexos - galinheiro, chiqueiro, estábulo, curral etc. Todos os exemplares encontrados eram capturados, identificados e, quando possível, examinado o conteúdo intestinal para detecção de Trypanosoma. O estudo envolveu 87 dos 136 municípios em que se divide geograficamente o Maranhão. O Panstrongylus megistus encontrava-se confinado em 14 municípios pertencentes à zona dos cerrados que caracterizam a porção mais meridional do Estado. Dos 1.632 exemplares capturados 277 foram examinados, resultando no índice global de infecção por Trypanosoma tipo cruzi de 1,1%. Os municípios que apresentaram maior quantidade de espécimens capturados foram São João dos Patos (22,4%), Pastos Bons (15%), São Raimundo das Mangabeiras (14,5%), Mirador (14,3%), Riachão (8,3%) e Loreto (6,2%). Atualmente, o P. megistus restringe a sua área de ocorrência às regiões sudeste e sul do Maranhão. A julgar por este padrão de distribuição, presume-se que esta espécie penetrou no território maranhense através dos estados do Piauí, Goiás ou Tocantins, utilizando os cerrados como rota.

Neste trabalho, relata-se pela primeira vez a ocorrência de Panstrongylus lignarius no Estado de Mato Grosso. Entre 2001 e 2009, cinco espécimes foram capturados pelos moradores dos municípios de Paranaíta, Alta Floresta, Lucas do Rio Verde, Sorriso e Guarantã do Norte e enviados ao Laboratório de Entomologia da Secretaria de Estado de Saúde de Mato Grosso, onde foram identificados como Panstrongylus lignarius (Walker, 1837). O encontro dessa espécie no estado do Mato Grosso, Brasil, amplia a sua distribuição geográfica.
