Research studies in chemical education pose a communication problem for chemists. Unlike the findings from other specializations in chemistry the findings in chemical education tend to be reported in education journals that are not readily accessible to most chemists or chemistry teachers. This lecture is an attempt to remedy this gap in communication. Research studies fall into three broad categories. (i) issues related to the content of chemistry itself, that is, What content to teach? And What meaning of each topic is to be conveyed? (ii) issues related to how chemical content is taught, such as, the role of lectures, practical work, particular pedagogies, etc. and (iii) issues related to its learning, that is, learning of concepts, conceptual change, motivation, etc. Findings in each of these categories of research over the last twenty years have drawn attention to opportunities for improving the quality of chemical education in each of the levels of formal education where chemistry is taught. Sometimes the research findings seem small since they, in fact, merely diagnose the actual problem in teaching and learning. At other times, the research findings are large because they provide a solution to these problems. What remains to be done is to disseminate the findings so that appropriate teaching occurs more widely, with its consequent gains in the quality of learning. Research findings, of these small and large types will be used to illustrate the potential of research to make the practice of chemical education more effective.

Seedlings of 41 different citrus species and varieties were massively colonized with the citrus brown aphid Toxoptera citricidus, obtained from Pêra sweet orange (Citrus sinensis) trees, presenting symptoms of the "Capão Bonito" complex of the Citrus tristeza virus (CTV). The objective was to evaluate resistance or tolerance of the varieties to that virus complex, but even after eight months of inoculation no stem pitting was observed in the plants. Otherwise, the presence of galls similar to those induced by the vein enation-woody gall disease was observed in 73% of the plants of Volkamer Palermo (Citrus volkameriana), 60% of the Volkamer Catania 2, 2% of the Rangpur Lime D.22.30 (Citrus limonia), 13% of the Volkamer Australian Red, the Rangpur Lime hybrid, the Orlando tangelo (Citrus reticulata x Citrus paradisi) and the Florida Rough lemon (C. jambhiri), and 7% of the Carrizo citrange (Poncirus trifoliata x Citrus sinensis). The highest incidence and the largest gall size were observed in the Palermo Volkamer showing that this clone would be the most suitable to be used as an indicator plant in biological indexing tests for the disease. There are no previous reports in the literature about the occurrence of woody galls in Orlando tangelo and Carrizo citrange.

Transcriptase reverse - polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and dot blot hybridization with digoxigenin-labeled probes were applied for the universal detection of Tospovirus species. The virus species tested were Tomato spotted wilt virus, Tomato chlorotic spot virus, Groundnut ringspot virus, Chrysanthemum stem necrosis virus, Impatiens necrotic spot virus, Zucchini lethal chlorosis virus, Iris yellow spot virus. Primers for PCR amplification were designed to match conserved regions of the tospovirus genome. RT-PCR using distinct primer combinations was unable to simultaneously amplify all tospovirus species and consistently failed to detect ZLCV and IYSV in total RNA extracts. However, all tospovirus species were detected by RT-PCR when viral RNA was used as template. RNA-specific PCR products were used as probes for dot hybridization. This assay with a M probe (directed to the G1/G2 gene) detected at low stringency conditions all Tospovirus species, except IYSV. At low stringency conditions, the L non-radioactive probe detected the seven Tospovirus species in a single assay. This method for broad spectrum detection can be potentially employed in quarantine services for indexing in vitro germplasm.

An isolate of Grapevine virus B (GVB), obtained by indexing Vitis labrusca and V. vinifera grapevines on the indicator LN33, was transmitted mechanically to several Nicotiana species. The virus was partially purified from N. cavicola and the coat protein estimated at 23 kDa by SDS-PAGE. In negatively stained leaf extracts of experimentally inoculated N. cavicola and N. occidentalis, flexuous particles with cross banding were observed, predominantly measuring 750-770 x 12 nm, with a modal length of 760 nm. Decoration indicated a clear, positive reaction against AS-GVB. In DAS-ELISA, GVB was detected in N. cavicola and grapevine extracts, and Western blots showed homologous and cross reaction of GVB and GVA antisera with GVB coat protein. Using specific primers for GVB, a fragment of 594 bp, comprising the coat protein gene coding for 197 amino acids, was amplified by RT-PCR with viral RNA extracted from GVB-infected N. occidentalis. The nucleotide and the deduced amino acid sequences of the coat protein gene showed high identities with Italian and Japanese isolates of GVB.

The coat protein gene of Apple stem grooving virus (ASGV) was amplified by RT-PCR, cloned, sequenced and subcloned in the expression vector pMal-c2. This plasmid was used to transform Escherichia coli BL21c+ competent cells. The ASGV coat protein (cp) was expressed as a fusion protein containing a fragment of E. coli maltose binding protein (MBP). Bacterial cells were disrupted by sonication and the ASGVcp/MBP fusion protein was purified by amylose resin affinity chromatography. Polyclonal antibodies from rabbits immunized with the fusion protein gave specific reactions to ASGV from infected apple (Malus domestica) cv. Fuji Irradiada and Chenopodium quinoa at dilutions of up to 1:1,000 and 1:2,000, respectively, in plate trapped ELISA. The ASGVcp/MBP fusion protein reacted to a commercial antiserum against ASGV in immunoblotting assay. The IgG against ASGVcp/MBP performed favorably in specificity and sensitivity to the virus. This method represents an additional tool for the efficient ASGV-indexing of apple propagative and mother stock materials, and for use in support of biological and molecular techniques.

The competition between weeds and crops is a topic of great interest, since this interaction can cause heavy losses in agriculture. Despite the existence of some studies on this subject, little is known about the importance of soil microorganisms in the modulation of weed-crop interactions. Plants compete for water and nutrients in the soil and the ability of a given species to use the available resources may be directly affected by the presence of some microbial groups commonly found in the soil. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are able to associate with plant roots and affect the ability of different species to absorb water and nutrients from the soil, promoting changes in plant growth. Other groups may promote positive or negative changes in plant growth, depending on the identity of the microbial and plant partners involved in the different interactions, changing the competitive ability of a given species. Recent studies have shown that weeds are able to associate with mycorrhizal fungi in agricultural environments, and root colonization by these fungi is affected by the presence of other weeds or crops species. In addition, weeds tend to have positive interactions with soil microorganisms while cultures may have neutral or negative interactions. Competition between weeds and crops promotes changes in the soil microbial community, which becomes different from that observed in monocultures, thus affecting the competitive ability of plants. When grown in competition, weeds and crops have different behaviors related to soil microorganisms, and the weeds seem to show greater dependence on associations with members of the soil microbiota to increase growth. These data demonstrate the importance of soil microorganisms in the modulation of the interactions between weeds and crops in agricultural environments. New perspectives and hypotheses are presented to guide future research in this area.
