An evaluation of the insecticidal activity of the fruits extracts of Trichilia claussenii was carried out and the methanol extract revealed to have strong insecticidal activity. The fractionation of methanol extract of T. claussenii seeds bioassay-guided against Spodoptera frugiperda has led to the identification of the ω-phenylalkyl and alkenyl fatty acids as active compounds in this extract. The structures of the compounds were proposed by spectroscopic analysis and comparison with literature data.

Two new sesquiterpenes 6α-ethoxyeudesm-4(15)-en-1β-ol (1) and (7R*)-5-epi-opposit-4(15)-ene-1β,7-diol (7) were isolated from the seeds of a specimen of Guarea guidonia (Meliaceae). Five other known sesquiterpenes, eudesm-4(15)-ene-1β,6α-diol (2), 5-epi-eudesm-4(15)-ene-1β,6β-diol (3), eudesm-4(15)-ene-1β,5α-diol (4), eudesm-4(15),7-dien-1β-ol (5) and (7R*)-opposit-4(15)-ene-1β,7-diol (6), were also isolated in this work. Their structures were determined on the basis of spectral data (MS, IR, and NMR-1D and 2D) and subsequent comparisons with the literature. The substances 3, 4 and 6 are reported for the first time in Meliaceae and 5 for the first time in the genus Guarea.

The goal of this work was to develop a homemade device to desalinate brackish water, using biological material like seeds from different plant species of the semi arid regions. Umbu seeds (Spondias tuberosa Arruda Câmara) were found to be the most appropriate material, removing a higher quantity of salt from the water compared to the other tested materials. The salt content in 1 L of brackish water typical of the region can be removed with only 1 g of the material, if the water is heated to 50 °C and it may also lower the water hardness, achieving drinking water standards.

Six limonoids were isolated in hexane extract obtained from the seeds and pericarps of Carapa guianensis. The structures of the limonoids were determined based on the analysis of High Resolution Mass Spectroscopy and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (uni-and bi-dimensional experiments) data. This is the first report of isolation of the limonoid 6α-acetoxy-7-deacetilgedunin from the seeds of the C. guianensis species. The limonoid 6-hydroxy-methyl angolensate was also described for the first time in this species.

The aim of this work was to verify the ability of enzymatic crude extract from dormant castor bean seeds to yield concentrated fatty acids by hydrolysis of polyunsaturated vegetable oils such as corn and sunflower. The enzymatic extract exhibited higher activity towards corn oil, which was selected for further studies to determine optimum hydrolysis conditions by factorial design. Maximum hydrolysis percentage (≈84%) was reached at 60% wt. oil:buffer acetate 100 mM pH 4.5, 33 ºC and 5.0% wt. of crude extract after 70 min of reaction. These results suggest that the use of low-cost lipase from castor bean seeds has potential for oil hydrolysis.

Sixteen dialkylphosphorylhydrazones were synthesized by condensation of phosphorylhydrazines with substituted isatins. Products were characterized by FTIR, ¹H-NMR, 13C-NMR, and 31P-NMR. Fungicidal activities of these compounds against Rhizoctonia solani and Fusarium oxysporum were also evaluated. Some compounds inhibited the growth of Rhizoctonia solani and Fusarium oxysporum by 43% and 51%, respectively. These compounds exhibited no effects on germination of lettuce seeds (Lactuca sativa L).

Seed-assisted synthesis of zeolites diminishes crystallization time and enables the industrial use of certain zeolites, which was conventionally unfeasible due to the complexity of synthesis and the cost of organic structure-directing agents. This study reports the primary results of zeolite crystallization in the presence of seeds, which are used as a substitute for organic compounds.
