Outbreaks caused by vaccine-derived polioviruses are challenging the final eradication of paralytic poliomyelitis. Therefore, the surveillance of the acute flaccid paralysis cases based on poliovirus isolation and characterization remains an essential activity. Due to the use of trivalent oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV), mixtures containing more than one serotype of Sabin-related polioviruses are frequently isolated from clinical samples. Because each poliovirus isolate needs to be individually analyzed, we designed polymerase chain reaction primers that can selectively distinguish and amplify a genomic segment of the three Sabin-related poliovirus serotypes present in mixtures, thus, optimizing the diagnosis and providing prompt information to support epidemiologic actions.

Ni(II)-Fe(II)-Fe(III) layered double hydroxides (LDH) or Ni-containing sulfate green rust (GR2) samples were prepared from Ni(II), Fe(II) and Fe(III) sulfate salts and analyzed with X ray diffraction. Nickel is readily incorporated in the GR2 structure and forms a solid solution between GR2 and a Ni(II)-Fe(III) LDH. There is a correlation between the unit cell a-value and the fraction of Ni(II) incorporated into the Ni(II)-GR2 structure. Since there is strong evidence that the divalent/trivalent cation ratio in GR2 is fixed at 2, it is possible in principle to determine the extent of divalent cation substitution for Fe(II) in GR2 from the unit cell a-value. Oxidation forms a mixture of minerals but the LDH structure is retained if at least 20 % of the divalent cations in the initial solution are Ni(II). It appears that Ni(II) is incorporated in a stable LDH structure. This may be important for two reasons, first for understanding the formation of LDHs, which are anion exchangers, in the natural environment. Secondly, this is important for understanding the fate of transition metals in the environment, particularly in the presence of reduced Fe compounds.

The impact of biological chromium's activity may be beneficial or not. This review presents the most relevant chemical aspects of these "two faces" of chromium by covering first, the efforts toward a clearer understanding of the carcinogenic properties of chromium compounds. The biomimetic chemistry of Cr(V) complexes illustrates the interactions of the intermediates formed by Cr(VI) reduction with DNA or oligonucleotides. The importance of trivalent chromium as an essential element is also emphasized by summarizing the recent results of the investigations on trinuclear chromium complexes as models of the cofactor responsible for the insulin activity, as well as good candidates for new nutritional supplements.

The synthesis of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) by hydrothermal-LDH reconstruction and coprecipitation methods is reviewed using a thermodynamic approach. A mixture model was used for the estimation of the thermodynamics of formation of LDHs. The synthesis and solubility of LDHs are discussed in terms of standard molar Gibbs free energy change of reaction. Data for numerous divalent and trivalent metals as well as for some monovalent and tetravalent metals that may be part of the LDH structure have been compiled. Good agreement is found between theoretical and experimental data. Diagrams and tables for the prediction of possible new LDH materials are provided.

In this study, the preparation of the xerogel anilinepropylsilica is reported. The ability of the xerogel for extracting Al(III), Cr(III) and Fe(III) from ethanol was investigated at 25 ºC. The xerogel adsorption capacities were obtained from the adsorption isotherms by using the batch method. Flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) was used to estimate the concentration of metal ions in solution. The adsorption affinity follows the series Cr(III) > Fe(III) > Al(III) and the maximum adsorption capacities of the metal ions were 0.61, 0.52 and 0.43 mmol g-1, respectively.

The use of organoantimonial complexes in the therapeutic of leishmaniasis and schistosomiasis has been limited mainly by the need for daily parenteral administration, their adverse side-effects and the appearance of drug resistance. Liposome encapsulation has been so far the most effective means to improve the efficacy of pentavalent antimonials against visceral leishmaniasis. Pharmacologically- and pharmaceutically-acceptable liposomal compositions are still being investigated through manipulation of preparation method, lipid composition and vesicle size. Recently, the encapsulation of a trivalent antimonial within "stealth" liposomes was found to reduce its acute toxicity and effectively deliver this compound to the parasite in experimental schistosomiasis.

Physico-chemical properties of 3,4-dimethoxybenzoates of Co(II), Cu(II), La(III) and Nd(III) were studied. The complexes were obtained as hydrated or anhydrous polycrystalline solids with a metal ion-ligand mole ratio of 1 : 2 for divalent ions and of 1 : 3 in the case of trivalent cations. Their colours depend on the kind of central ion: pink for Co(II) complex, blue for Cu(II), white for La(III) and violet for Nd(III) complexes. The carboxylate groups in these compounds are monodentate, bidentate bridging or chelating and tridentate ligands. Their thermal decomposition was studied in the range of 293-1173 K. Hydrated complexes lose crystallization water molecules in one step and form anhydrous compounds, that next decompose to the oxides of respective metals. 3,4 - Dimethoxybenzoates of Co(II) is directly decomposed to the appropriate oxide and that of Nd(III) is also ultimately decomposed to its oxide but with the intemediate formation of Nd2O2CO3.. The magnetic moment values of 3,4-dimethoxybenzoates determined in the range of 76-303 K change from 4.22 µB to 4.61 µB for Co(II) complex , from 0.49 µB to 1.17 µB for Cu(II) complex , and from 2.69 µB to 3.15 µB for Nd(III) complex.

Solid-state Ln-Bz compounds, where Ln stands for trivalent lanthanides and Bz is benzoate have been synthesized. Simultaneous thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis in a CO2 atmosphere were used to study the thermal decomposition of these compounds.
