In the present work a polyurethane polymer derived from castor oil was used as stationary phase for capillary gas chromatography. The polymer was obtained by reaction of hydroxylated compound and isocynate (NCO), forming urethane. Columns of 7 m x 0,25 mm were then coated with this stationary phase (film thickness of 0,25 µm) using static coating method. The Grob test was also performed. Samples of essential oil of the Aniba duckei Korstermans was then analysed in POLYH4-MD capillary column in order to evaluate its chromatographic perfomance. The linalool was found to be the major component and has been used as compound of departure for many important syntheses. Results show that the experimental columns give higher resolution and can be employed for analysis of essentials oils.

Acidic hydrolysis of samples is frequent in urinary 2,5-hexanodione determination. This hydrolysis should be performed under proper conditions, in order to avoid interference, such as the presence of 2,5-dimethylfurane and 2-acetylfurane. The results of the present work, as well as data from the literature, show that the use of non-polar or slightly polar chromatographic columns of 30 m length is an essential condition for 2,5-HD determination in an acid hydrolysed urine sample. In the same way the pH should be kept between 0.3 and 0.5. The mean concentrations of 2,5-HD in samples submitted to hydrolysis (0.50 ± 0.28 mg/g of creatinine) was about 3 times higher than those found in the samples without acid hydrolysis (0.19 ± 0.3 mg/g of creatinine).

The aim of this study was to evaluate the behavior of Zn and Mn in a soil column. Two soil columns were sampled, and four opened alkaline batteries were placed at the top of one soil column. An acid-rainwater solution (HNO3 and H2SO4; pH 4) was percolated through the battery contaminated column during one year. The results showed that the leaching of alkaline batteries caused enrichment of 70 and 11 times in the Zn and Mn concentration of the topsoil, respectively. Additionally, leaching of electrolyte (KOH) from the batteries increased the soil pH in the contaminated column.

The adsorption of Cu(II) ions from aqueous solution by chitosan using a column in a closed hydrodynamic flow system is described. The adsorption capacities as a function of contact time of copper(II) ions and chitosan were determined by varying the ionic strength, temperature and the flow of the metal solution. The Langmuir model reproduced the adsorption isothermal data better than the Freundlich model. The experimental kinetic data correlate properly with the second-order kinetic reaction for the whole set of experimental adsorption conditions. The rate constants exercise great influence on the time taken for equilibrium to be established by complexation or electrostatic interaction between the amino groups of chitosan and the metal.

This work presents a new approach to control the flow rate in hydrodynamic flow experiments. The combination of air pressure generated by an aquarium air pump and the pressure generated by a water column were used for this purpose. This device supports a stable flow rate without pulsation for a long period of time. Furthermore, the flow rate can be easily controlled at various values in one or more streams. The performance of this approach was investigated using Fe(CN)6(4-) solutions in flowing systems using amperometric and voltammetric detection in wall-jet configuration. The results showed that the performance of the proposed device was better than a commercial peristaltic pump. It suggests that this approach can be used successfully in flow analysis systems.

Gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) is widely used for the characterization of volatile compounds. However, due to the complexity of the soluble coffee matrix, a complete identification of the components should not be based on mass spectra interpretation only. The linear index of retention (LRI) is frequently used to give support to mass spectra. The aim of this work is to investigate the characterization of the volatile compounds in soluble coffee samples by GC-MS using LRI values found with a HP-INNOWAX column. The method used allows a significant increase of the reliability of identifying compounds.

In this paper we gathered articles concerning insertion reactions of arynes, exclusively generated from 2-(trimethylsilyl)aryl triflates in the presence of fluoride ions, in substrates bearing nucleophilic and electrophilic portions separated by sigma bonds. Accordingly, we stand out the great importance and versatility of such transformations in the preparation of highly functionalized aromatic systems, which are hardly synthesized in just one step for other methods.

Hydrogen bonds formed through the interaction between a high electronic density center (lone electron pairs, π or pseudo-π bonds) and proton donors cause important electronic and vibrational phenomena in many systems. However, it was demonstrated that proton donors interact with hydrides, such as alkali and alkaline earth metals (BeH2, MgH2, LiH and NaH), what yields a new type of interaction so-called dihydrogen bonds. The characterization of these interactions has been performed at light of the Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM), by which the electronic densities ρ are quantified and the intermolecular regions are characterized as closed-shell interactions through the analysis of the Laplacian field ∇2ρ.

The concentration of 14 organic acids of 50 sugarcane spirits samples was determined by gas chromatography using flame ionization detection. The organic acids analytical quantitative profile in stills and column distilled spirits from wines obtained from the same must were compared. The comparison was also carried in "head", "heart" and "tail fractions of stills distilled spirits. The experimental data were analyzed by Principal Components Analysis (PCA) and pointed out that the distillation process (stills and column) strongly influences the lead spirits' organic acid composition and that producers' operational "cuts off" to produce "tail", "heart" and "head", fractions should be optimized.

Hydrogen bond energies of fifteen dimers were calculated using the large basis set 6-311++G(3df,3pd), at Hartree-Fock (HF) level including Møller-Plesset (MP2) calculations. The procedure for obtaining such energies were based on the dimer's energy rise provoked by increasing in intermolecular distance of the system component units. Deviations from a strictly linear hydrogen bond were investigated and rotational barriers were also computed allowing the calculation of the second order attractive interactions. In order to provide a more objective definition of hydrogen bond, a lower energy limit was proposed in place of the merely empirical parameters employed in the classical definition

Spent nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cd) batteries and salts of nickel and cadmium were placed in two different columns of soil for a period of two years. A leaching solution was passed through them at ambient temperature in this period. The behavior of metals in each column was then evaluated. Under the conditions of the experiment, cadmium and nickel demonstrated the potential to contaminate and affect the natural cycles of soil. The disposal of Ni-Cd batteries directly to the soil also increased the concentration of nickel (349 mg kg-1) and cadmium (2890 mg kg-1), sometimes exceeding the intervention values defined in CONAMA resolution 420/09.

In this work, a theoretical study on the basis of structural, vibrational, electronic and topological parameters of the C2H2‧‧‧(HF), C2H2‧‧‧2(HF) and C2H2‧‧‧3(HF) complexes concerning the formation of π‧‧‧H, F‧‧‧H and C‧‧‧H hydrogen bonds is presented. The main difference among these complexes is not properly the interaction strength, but the hydrogen bond type whose benchmark is ruled justly by the structure. Meanwhile, the occurrence of π‧‧‧H hydrogen bonds was unveiled in both C2H2‧‧‧(HF) dimer and C2H2‧‧‧3(HF) tetramer, although in latter, this interaction is stronger than C‧‧‧H of the C2H2‧‧‧2(HF) trimer. However, the F‧‧‧H hydrogen bonds within the subunits of hydrofluoric acid are the strongest ones, reaching a partial covalent limit, and thereby contribute decisively to the stabilization of the tetramer structure. In line with this, the largest red-shifts were observed on the hydrofluoric acid trimer of the C2H2‧‧‧3(HF) complex.
