Determination of presence and quantification of cadmium, lead and copper in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) fillets obtained from three cold storage plants in the state of Parana, Brazil

Pisciculture is an economic activity that is steadily growing in the state of Parana, Brazil, and Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) is one of the widely cultivated species in this state. Tilapia is not only a very nutritious food, but also an important indicator of environmental contamination. This study aimed to verify contamination by cadmium, copper and lead in tilapia fillets, and to compare the found values to international legislations. Were collected 135 samples of tilapia fillets, between July 2006 and May 2007, in three fish stores located in regions west and north of Paraná State. Samples of tilapia fillet were analyzed in relation to the presence of cadmiun, lead and copper, using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Lead has not been detected in the analyses. Cadmium has been detected in three samples, on concentrations of 0.012 µg.g-1, 0.011 µg.g-1 and 0.014 µg.g-1. Copper has been detected in all fillets, and the average concentration of each cold storage plant was of 0.122 µg.g-1, 0.106 µg.g-1 and 0.153 µg.g-1. The concentrations found in this study are within the limits allowed by both the European and the Australian legislations.

Postharvest technologies for mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.) conservation

The application of technologies to extend the postharvest life of mangosteen fruit was studied and compared to storage at 25 °C/70-75%R.H (25 °C control treatment). The fruits were packed in expanded polystyrene (EPS) trays (5 fruits/tray). Five treatments were carried out at 13 °C/ 90-95% RH: application of carnauba wax coating, lecithin + CMC (carboxymethyl cellulose) coating, 50 µm LDPE (low density polyethylene) film coating, 13 µm PVC (Polyvinyl chloride), and non-coated sample (13 °C control treatment). Physicochemical analyses were performed twice a week. A statistical design was completely randomized with 8 repetitions for each treatment plus the control treatment. The results were submitted to variance analysis, and the averages compared by the Tukey test at 5% probability. Among the quality parameters analyzed, more significant differences were observed for weight loss, texture, and peel moisture content. The results showed that the maximum storage period for mangosteen at 25 °C is two weeks; while storage at13 °C can guarantee the conservation of this fruit for 25 days. Therefore, the treatment at 13 °C/90-95% RH without the use of coatings and films was more effective and economical.

Síndrome de Hadju-Cheney: alterações renais em um relato de caso

A síndrome de Hadju-Cheney é uma doença genética caracterizada por dismorfismos craniofaciais e alterações ósseas responsáveis pelo fenótipo da doença. As alterações renais, como cistos renais corticais, refluxo vesico - ureteral e falência renal, são raramente relatadas, mas são incluídas como apresentações menos comuns. O diagnóstico genético ainda não está disponível e a patogênese é relacionada a mutações no gene NOTCH. Os autores relatam um caso de um homem de 26 anos; porém, com características fenotípicas de um paciente pediátrico. Ele se apresentou com síndrome nefrótica, hipertensão arterial, cistos renais corticais e insuficiência renal aguda requerendo hemodiálise. A biopsia renal evidenciou glomeruloesclerose focal e segmentar e o tratamento para esse paciente foi de suporte com terapia hemodialítica. O diagnóstico da síndrome de Hadju-Cheney foi dado durante investigação do quadro renal.

Morfologia de frutos, sementes, plântulas e plantas de Erythrina velutina willd., leguminoseae - Papilionideae

O conhecimento dos aspectos morfológicos de sementes e plântulas pode ser usado em estudos de taxonomia, na interpretação de testes de germinação em laboratório, trabalhos em viveiro e em estudos relacionados à ecologia da espécie. Os objetivos deste trabalho foram o de descrever e ilustrar a morfologia externa e interna dos frutos e sementes, as fases de germinação, a plântula e as plantas de mulungu (Erythrina velutina Willd.). Os frutos e sementes foram coletados no solo, embaixo de árvores matrizes distribuídas em diferentes fragmentos florestais, no município de Areia - PB. Para a descrição morfológica dos frutos, sementes, germinação e desenvolvimento da plântula foram examinados cem unidades que foram selecionadas aleatoriamente. A semente é reniforme; embrião axial com cotilédones carnosos; germinação epígea fanerocotiledonar e na fase de plântula foi observado heterofilia. Os aspectos descritos e ilustrados mostraram-se homogêneos e confiáveis para a identificação da espécie. Deste modo, podem ser úteis em trabalhos de tecnologia de sementes, para a avaliação qualidade fisiológica de sementes e avaliação de plântulas em testes de germinação, além de servirem para identificação da espécie em viveiros e também para estudos de regeneração natural.

Fatores comuns determinantes de crises cambiais e financeiras

Determinative common factors of currency and financial crisis. This paper identifies and evaluates determinative common factors of currency and financial crisis in relation to 86 crises episodes between 1970-2004, based on factor analysis, cluster and discriminant analysis. One evidenced that the rise of the ratios of domestic credit, fiscal deficit and residents bank deposits to the GDP is inherent to the different types of crises classified for economic literature. It was also identified as common factors to these episodes some indicators that capture the excessive monetary expansion of the economies and that reflect the fall in international reserves, represented by M2/Reserves and Imports/Reserves ratios and also the total volume of international reserves.

A curva de Rangel: origem, desenvolvimento e a formalização de Bresser-Pereira e Nakano

For Rangel inflation is caused by oligopolies and is necessary because it prevents a depression in an economy with low propensity to consume. Facing inflation, government prints money to avoid a liquidity crisis. This conception implies a double opposition to monetarist thought: conceives inflation as functional phenomenon and reverses the causality established by the quantitative equation. Bresser and Nakano were highly influenced by Rangel and stress that inflation is caused by oligopolies and also propose a "sanctioning role" of the state. However, these authors go further Rangel arguing that in recession inflation accelerates thus, formalizing a negative relationship between GDP growth and inflation, according with the so called "Rangel curve".

A proposta de uma teoria geral de princípios de abstração: uma contribuição à fundamentação da aritmética

O objetivo do presente artigo é apresentar a correlação entre o programa logicista fregeano de fundamentação da aritmética, o neologicismo de Crispin Wright e os chamados princípios de abstração. Minha tese é que uma análise geral de princípios de abstração, do ponto de vista lógico e explanatório, é mais basilar que o projeto de fundamentação da aritmética na forma como ele foi proposto pelo logicismo. Isso fica evidente através do fato de que o fracasso do programa logicista esteve intimamente ligado à imprecisão e inconsistência no uso de procedimento de abstração.
