Contribuição para o estudo dos vetores de malaria no Brasil: Anopheles (Nyssorhynchus) Darlingi Root, em Campos, no Estado do Rio

Os autores relatam nesse trabalho observações colhidas no estudo da fauna anofélica da cidade de Campos, Estado do Rio. Assinalaram a presença das espécies A. arbitarsis, A. darlingi, A. triannulatus, A. oswaldoi, A. noroestensis, A. pessoai e A. intermedius. Em capturas domiciliares foram assinalados o darlingi, albitarsis e triannulatus, sendo êste último encontrado em pequeno número e nas casas em que animais domésticos cohabitavam com o homem, dormindo sob o mesmo teto. Como vetores locais encontraram o A. darlingi com 6.8% de oócistos e 4% de esporozoítos, o albitarsis com 2% de oócistos e as glândulas negativas para esporozoítos. Fizeram os A. A. um estudo sumário dos criadouros, assinalaram que as larvas do darlingi tanto podem ser encontradas nas grandes coleções hídricas, lagoas e canais, como em depressão do terreno e valas de drenagem a céu aberto. Fizeram ainda uma revisão bibliográfica em relação a capacidade vetora do darlingi e sôbre a ecologia das suas larvas.

The life history of Hepatozoon leptodactyli (Lesage, 1908) Pessoa, 1970: a parasite of the common laboratory animal: the frog of the genus Leptodactylus

The main object of the present paper is to furnish a brief account to the knowledgement of Protozoa parasitic in common Brazilian frog of the genus Leptodactylus for general students in Zoology and for investigators that use this frog as a laboratory animal. Hepatozoon leptodactyli (Haemogregarina leptodactyli) was found in two species of frogs - Leptodactylus ocellatus and L. pentadactylus - in which develop schizogony whereas sporogony occurs in the leech Haementeria lutzi as was obtainded in experimental conditions. Intracellular forms have been found in peripheral circulation, chiefly in erythrocytes, but we have found them in leukocytes too. Tissue stages were found in frog, liver, lungs, spleen, gut, brain and heart. The occurence of hemogregarine in the Central Nervous System was recorded by Costa & al,(13) and Ball (2). Some cytochemical methods were employed in attempt to differentiate gametocytes from trophozoites in the peripheral blood and to characterize the cystic membrane as well. The speorogonic cycle was developed in only one specie of leech. A brief description of the parasite is given.

Functional analysis of the murine T lymphocyte immune response to a protozoan parasite, Leishmania tropica

The results presented in this review summarize a seirs of experiments designed to characterize the murine T cell imune response to the protozoan parasite Leishmania tropica. Enriched T cell populations and T cell clones specific for L. tropica antigens were derived from lymph nodes of primed mice and maintained in continous culture in vitro. These T lymphocytes were shown (A) to express the Lyt 1+ 3- cell surface phenotype, (B) to proliferate specifically in vitro in response to parasite antigens, together with a source of irradiated syngeneic macrophages, (C) to transfer antigen-specific delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) responses to normal syngeneic mice, (D) to induce specific activation of parasitized macrophages in vitro resulting in the destruction of intracellular parasites, (E) to provide specific helper activity for antibody responses in vitro in a hapten-carrier system. Protection studies using these defiened T cell populations should allow the characterization of parasite antigen(s) implicated in the induction of cellular immune responses beneficial for the host.

The vertical dispersión of Anopheles (Kerteszia) cruzi in a forest in southern Brazil suggests that human cases of malaria of simian origin might be expected

By staining females of Anopheles cruzi with fluorescent coloured powders in a forest in the State of Santa Catarina, we showed that they move from canopy to ground and vice-versa to feed. This suggests that in areas where this mosquito is a vector of human and simian malarias sporadic infections of man with monkey plasmodia might be expected.

Observations on the sandfly (Diptera: Psychodidae) fauna of Além Paraíba state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, and the isolation of a parasite of the Leishmania braziliensis complex from Psychodopygus hirsuta hirsuta

Dissection of 765 sandflies captured in Além Paraíba (the type locality of Leishmania braziliensis) resulted in the isolation, from Psychodopygus hirsuta hirsuta, of a parasite of the Le. braziliensis complex.
