This work discusses an analytical procedure for analysis of sulfur compounds in treated petroleum refinery gaseous effluents using a sulfur chemiluminescence detector with dual plasma burner (SCD-DP). Calibration was accomplished by using standards and gaseous streams of known concentration of sulfur compounds. The response factors agree with the calibration table of ASTM standard D 5504 (2008). The detection range for sulfur compounds is in μg m-3. The analytical procedure allowed the construction of a chromatographic chart of sulfur compounds present in several refinery gaseous effluents. SO2 was the most difficult compound to be determined because of its high reactivity.

This work is focused on the chemical distribution of volatile and semi-volatile compounds of 18 native populations of Maytenus ilicifolia collected all over Brazil. The extracts of bulk samples (30 plants) of each population were obtained by supercritical CO2 extraction technique, and analyzed by GC/MS. The quantification of compounds (phytol, squalene, vitamin E, limonene, stigmasterol, friedelan-3-ol, friedelin, fridelan-3-one, palmitic acid and geranyl acetate) showed significant variations within the different populations, which could be related tom microclimate characteristics.

Effects of two ethylene inhibitors, 1-methylcylopropene (1-MCP) and aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG), on production of volatile compounds and mangiferin (a bioactive xanthone) in 'Tommy Atkins' mango fruit were investigated. Volatile composition and mangiferin content, in treated and untreated fruits at three maturity, stages were determined by SPME-GC-MS and HPLC, respectively. These chromatographical analysis revealed that the volatile profiles and mangiferin concentrations were not significantly different, suggesting that the use of ethylene inhibitors does not affect the mango aroma and functional properties relative to this xanthone. Moreover, a simple, precise and accurate HPLC method was developed for quantifying mangiferin in mango pulp.

Rubus fruticosus (Rosaceae), popularly known as Blackberry, is a highly nutritious fruit, rich in bioactive compounds. Their stability during processing has been the focus of several studies. This work describes the evaluation of the stability of the main phytochemicals of pulp from blackberry cv. Tupy, stored under different temperature conditions for six months. The storage at -10 °C was not sufficient to cause significant changes in total phenolics content, anthocyanins content and antioxidant capacity during two months of storage. Likewise, at -18 °C, total phenolics content and antioxidant capacity were kept for four months, but total anthocyanins and β-carotene content were kept for two and six months of storage, respectively.

The development of new magnetic materials has attracted attention of researchers of different areas. In the last decades, a distinguished class of materials emerged in magnetism, in which the magnetic moment is delocalized over molecules. By varying the synthetic conditions it is possible to obtain a large variety of structures and properties using the same starting molecules. These materials have a great scientific appeal due to the possibility of presenting not only magnetic, but also optical or electrical transport properties. In this review we will present an overview of some molecular magnetic compounds, in particular molecular nanomagnets.

The present work provides an overview of patent protection for second medical use of known chemical compounds, in Brazil and other countries, through the approach of the main controversies related to this theme. That issues encompass aspects related to the legality of the protection granted by the patent, the general requirements of patenteability, the ethic and social concepts and the politic and economic factors involved. This work also introduces the diverging views of the two Brazilian government agencies involved in the procedure for granting patent in the pharmaceutical area, INPI and ANVISA.

Considering the broad spectrum of biological activity of gamma-butyrolactone derivatives, we presented the synthesis of 3,4-dihalo-5-arylidenefuran-2(5H)-ones (17-21) and analogues (24-28) of the natural product nostoclide (7,8). Furanones 17-21 were synthesized from the condensation of aromatic aldehydes with lactones 14 and 15, that were obtained from mucobromic and mucochloric acids. Lactone 15 was converted into the intermediate 23 in 36% overall yield. Compound 23 was then transformed into the nostoclide analogues 24-28. Some of the compounds prepared showed antimicrobial activities against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus comparable to commercial antibiotics.

[RE(czb)3(H2O)2] complexes (where RE = Eu3+, Tb3+, Gd3+; and czb = 4-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)benzoato) have been synthesized and characterized. The Gd3+ complex was used to determine the triplet state energy of the czb ligand. Photoluminescence measurements of the complexes have been carried out under UV excitation. The Tb3+ complex exhibited a strong green luminescence indicating an efficient antenna effect, whereas the Eu3+ complex showed low red luminescence and the Gd3+ complex a blue-green luminescence from the ligand. The luminescence lifetimes and quantum yields have also been measured for the evaluation of the spectroscopic behavior of the complexes.

This review reports the use of solid amalgam electrodes in the electroanalytical determination of organic and inorganic compounds. The different types of amalgam electrodes are presented, and attention is paid to solid amalgam electrode, and here is presented details about the pre-treatment for activation and renovation and also possible modifications in its surface. The wide potential range, higher signal-to-noise ratio, mechanical stability enabling their application in flowing systems, and principally their resistance toward passivation, indicate that the solid amalgam electrodes are environmentally friendly alternatives to mercury electrodes, without loss in the sensitivity and reproducibility in voltammetric responses.

Materials containing aluminum and iron oxide were synthesized through the preparation of hybrid spheres and tested in the dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene in the presence of CO2. The catalytic results suggest that the high initial ethylbenzene conversion is due to the contribution of basic sites. These results also point to a competitive process between CO2 adsorption and the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene for the basic sites (lattice oxygen). In spite of the coke deposition is originating from ethylbenzene and CO2, the amount of carbonaceous deposits was smaller with the presence of CO2, if compared with the dehydrogenation in the absence of CO2.

Recycling of paper in industrial scale has become an established practice worldwide. In this work, organic compositions of three different kinds of sludge generated in recycle paper industry were studied, and the incorporation of one of those sludge in briket was also investigated. The characterization of organic compounds in sludge samples and briket was performed using Gas Chromatography coupled with Mass Spectrometry after a Soxhlet extraction. Different chemical classes were identified in each type of sludge, but just the sludge composed by cellulose residue did not presented polyaromatic hydrocarbons. Four formulations of sludge incorporated with charcoal for briket production were evaluated.

Sodium bismuthate dihydrate and two species derived from its thermal treatment were investigated as catalysts for soybean oil methanolysis and, regardless of the type of solid used, ester yields always above 76 wt% were obtained. After a single reaction course, both liquid and solid phases were characterized using several analytical methods such as X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis. As a result, the catalytic phenomenon was shown to be solely due to the leaching of alkalinecatalytic species from the solid materials.

This work presents simple routes to recover iodine compounds from oxidized laboratory chemicals and aqueous solutions (HI and KI) used in laboratory chemistry classes. These routes are based on the oxidation of iodide ions (I-) to iodine (I2) by an oxidant (H2O2) or reduction of oxidized iodine by red phosphorus or hydrazine. Both routes presented high yields. The oxidative route is of general use whereas the reductive one is appropriate for restoring original iodine reagents. Final wastes were generated in low amounts. This work is appropriate for teaching many laboratory techniques (e.g., distillation, titration and filtration) in the chemical laboratory.
